  • How can I disassemble/replace the switch on my D-cell maglite?

I have seen tons of guides online on how to do this, but I think my model is too old (it dates back to early 90s). It is a maglite 3 x D-cell.

Every guide says to tear the rubber housing off the switch and then use an allen key (hex key) on the screw in the switch. My switch does not look like this. Under the rubber there is simply a solid plastic, white top, which serves as the on/off click switch. I have tried pushing it down and forcing the switch assembly out from either side but it wont budge. I have no idea how it is kept in there.

Anyone have one of these, or know how to do it?

  • How to take substring of filename in Bash?

I have a bunch of files like:

    CherryCoke-[filename1]

    CherryCoke-[filename2]

    etc.

I want to write a bash script to strip the 'CherryCoke-' away from all the files, effectively renaming all the files to the same thing, but without the prefix phrase. Any suggestions?

  • How to set user access to mounted drives in Ubuntu?

I have a Ubuntu system that is my own, but my girlfriend would like to use it for browsing/email until she gets hers set up properly. I don't want her to have full system access; I just want her to have something like a guest account, that cannot access any drives or do any system config.

I have managed to create a very restricted account, but because all my drives are mounted automatically in /etc/fstab they are readily available to browse with any user. How can I make the drives only mount to my username?

  • How to teach GSD to walk to heel?

I have a 2 year old german shepherd boy that my partner and I adopted. He is quite well behaved, but walking him is a nightmare! Being a 2 year old boy he is very strong, and unless he is tired (from playing fetch or whatever) he pulls really hard on the lead. I try to encourage him to walk to heel but he ignores my commands and pulls away. I guess he is too excited and distracted walking around in public to listen to me. If he pulls really hard I tend to stop altogether, and then he also stops, and looks back at me. But as soon as I start walking again he shoots off and tries to pull me along.

He is very well behaved in the house/garden and comes when he is called, sits on command, and lies down. He also stays when I tell him to, in cases where I need to go out the front door without him following me.

What can I do? He is so naughty when we are out and about, and off the lead he often ignores me when I try to recall him.

  • Why are fridges laid out the way they are?

I have always been taught that vegetables go in the drawer on the bottom, and everything else in the other shelves or door.

Why is it laid out this way? Does being in the bottom of the fridge in a drawer keep the vegetables crisper or something?

My partner and I had a disagreement; she says meat should be kept in the drawer to stop leaking and contamination. I never heard this in my 22 years of age...

  • I want my first dog, and I want it to be a "proper dog"!?

I am mostly interested in breeds like Rottweiler, Dobermann Pinscher, Siberian Huskey...Basically "big dogs". I don't want a ratty type thing, and I am not really interested in a Golden Retriever or a Labrador, they are sweet but a bit boring. My question is, are the breeds mentioned above too much for a first-time owner? I have read mixed comments on this; I never owned a dog of my own, but my partner has had dogs all her life (though slightly smaller, like Staffies and Bull Terrier).

  • How to see available BBCode tags?

When not a mod or admin on a forum (like Invision, or vbulletin) how can you see a list of all available bbcode tags?

There are those that are provided in the editing window, but in many cases there are lots of other ones that work, but are not shown to the user. Is there a file or a list that I can see what tags can be used?

  • Is there an organisation in the UK I can complain to about bad business conduct?

I know there is something but I cannot think of the name.

The situation is, I have been treated very badly by an electronics company and they owe me £150 in refunds but are messing me about, saying they did this that and the other and still I am sitting here with nothing. I am sick of calling them up and having them explain why they still have not refunded me.

Is there like a trade commision or something I can forward this problem to?

  • Where can I buy Cow and Chicken on DVD Nordic?

The nordic cartoon network (cartoonnetwork.nu, which covers norwegian, danish and swedish) have stopped airing Cow and Chicken, and I cannot find it anywhere on DVD. Does anyone know of somewhere they sell seasons 1-3 on DVD with nordic audio/dub?

Not expecting much, but worth a shot.

  • Sometimes when browsing the web i will click a link and comp freezes waiting for my disk to spin up..?

I dont understand it. I click a link and everything stops, and the hard drive starts to whirr then click and everything is back to normal.

the strange thing is, i think its my spare internal drive that is doing it, which is odd because i have not allocated any space for paged memory, nor are temp files stored on it..

    ideas?

  • Is it illegal to own an airsoft rifle without a UKARA license?

In the UK you need a UKARA license to purchase airsoft guns. However I have some from before the law came into effect. Is it illegal for me to own them now, or does it just apply to the purchase/seller?

Say I wanted to buy a used one from a friend, would he be legally obliged to check for a license? What if he doesn't? Does he get in trouble, or me, or both?

  • If you hit a car when youre on a major road and they are joining it, is it your fault?

Say if someone is reversing out their drive but youre going along on the road and you ram them because they pulled out in front of you, I would think it is their fault.

Im looking for US and UK law here, if anyone can help out.
