  • What's wrong with this picture? Excessive apartment damage charges?

These are the charges I received from my ex-landlord after asking to be reimbursed for nearly $4500 worth of our belongings which she threw out, claiming that our apartment was "abandoned". Our rent was paid through the month, she acknowledges on the form that we did indeed provide proper notice and we finished our term. The charges total $4973, less our deposits ($700, including pet deposits), bringing the bill to $4273. The charges just seem very fishy to me. The apartment is only about 800 sq. ft. Also, that woman was recently fired for stealing money hmmm...

$125: Claims that we owed $125 in rent: A lie, since it was paid in full for 6 months and that was the first we heard of this. I believe it was made up to justify her "abandonment" claim.

$20: Repair door scratches from our dog, a legit charge, I agree.

$3,718: For removing old carpet, replacing, and "slab treatment", whatever that is. This is the main charge I'm concerned with.

$250: For heavy cleaning. The unit was indeed dirty b/c we had not yet finished moving when she took it upon herself to do this. Had we been given the proper chance, it wouldn't have been left that dirty.

    $100: Trash removal?

$60: Keys not turned in (big clue it wasn't abandoned). She never asked for them.

$60: Paint touch up. We didn't damage the walls at all, this is normal wear and tear.

$615: Carpet CLEANING. How is this possible, to charge for what seems to be multiple cleanings AND replacement?

$150: De-flea. Our dogs didn't have fleas, they were on medication monthly for that. Plus, that's what she claimed the "slab treatment" was for.

What seems wrong here to you guys?

  • Does turning off utilities immediately constitute legal abandonment of an apartment unit?

    Long story short:

    1. We had a month to month verbal lease which was almost up, and also which had been paid for in full for the six month term in advance.

    2. We decided to move to a house which was directly across the street, which we informed the crazy landlady of, and said we were moving the next month. We did not give a specific date, however.

    3. So the next month, we began moving around mid-month because we were also paid through that month in the new residence.

    4. We did not finish moving everything out, we planned on returning for the rest when we got our truck back from my dad, so we could clean the carpet, etc. all at once.

    5. Well, we go in there one night to grab something and everything was thrown away. Meaning about %80 of my husbands' and my clothing, among other items, totaling to about $4300.

    6. When we were able to get in contact with that crazy woman that Monday, she was basically laughing and said we "abandoned" the apartment b/c we turned off our electricity, so she could throw out our stuff without even notifying us.

    7. Now she's sent us a bill for $4300 (the amount she incidentally denied us for our property), including what seems to be an exorbitant charge for carpet ($3700).

    8. I'll mention that we still had two cars parked on the premises, that we came to check our mail, and that she definitely knew where we were but did not bother to call or write. Keep in mind we literally moved like 30 FEET AWAY.

    Does this sound right??

  • Is $3700 reasonable to replace 800 sq. ft. of cheap carpet in an apartment?

Long story behind this, but basically I believe that the landlady of our old apartment is trying to screw us over because she decided that we were finished moving when we weren't (we were paid up to date and our lease wasn't up), and threw out about $4700 worth of our belongings without notifying us, then refused to compensate us. Instead, we receive a bill for $4700, $3700 of which is for CARPET. I believe she made that number up, because that seems like a ruse to stop us from asking for reimbursement for our things, and plus that carpet was cheap. The amount she billed us for is equal almost to another 6 months rent! Does this seem possible? Or should a lawsuit be eminent lol. Also, that same woman just got fired for stealing money ... big clue perhaps?

  • Will dying my one-time bleached hair back to natural black turn it green?

I have dyed my almost black hair only one time in my life (over 2 months ago). I dyed it a medium brown color w bleached highlights (no toning, just straight bleach) My hair is not damaged and should hold the color fine, but I want to make sure it isn't green or something else crazy. It's very faded now, even the bleached part has calmed down a LOT. Will it turn insane colors or will it just b black?

  • Dying my blonde hair black at home, help me!?

I am a natural very dark brunette. I have only dyed my hair once in my life, and its base is now a medium-ish brown (think beyonce sorta) with bleached highlights. My hair is not damaged. I want to use L'oreal Feria #20 Natural to dye it black. I bleached it over 2 months ago, I have an inch or so of roots, and the blonde and brown are both very faded compared to when I did it. Will I see any weird or undesirable colors from doing this? Also, is one box of Feria enough? My hair is pretty fine and down to the back of my bra. It also has alot of short layers, meaning it's thinner towards the bottom. Thanks : )

  • What to do my grandma can't afford a funeral for my aunt?

My 39 year old is dying of cancer and my grandma is her only caretaker. My grandma definitely does not have the money to bury her. She shouldn't even be driving bc of the amount of medication she's on! I'm so worried! Cremation or donating to science is the obvious answer but my aunt selfishly is making her promise not to burn her. My poor grandma is of course going to respect her wishes. BTW it's my aunt's fault for smoking multiple packs of cigs a day plus drugs and other crap. I'm so angry that she can't even give my grandma a break, plus she's leaving 3 children behind with no dads. Sorry that's off subject but I'm so upset. My question is what happens if somebody truly can't afford a funeral? What does the government do? Social Security is giving a whopping $255. OMG help, they live in TN and I'm in New Orleans so I can't even help. Help?!

  • Help again! Landlord threw all our clothes away but our lease isn't even up?

Ok I had just asked about what to do if my landlord had entered my apt without my permission and moved my things, even though our rent is paid and we werent evicted. We just moved and hadn't gotten all our things yet. Well update, I called and she threw out EVERYTHING. That's almost all my and my husbands clothes, including his wedding suit : (( And lots of kitchen items and textbooks and other things. She said oh you abandoned the place bc the utilities were off more than 10 days and no, I don't have to notify you.

Isn't this wrong??? They do have to notify us and they have to place our things in storage and give us a chance to claim it! Anybody familiar with Louisiana law?? Help!!

  • Help!! Was my landlord allowed to remove our belongings when our rent is current and we have not been evicted?

Basically my husband and I had a month to month lease which is paid in full through Dec. 5th. We informed the landlady verbally that we were moving sometime this month. The house is on the next corner and she is aware of where we live, not to mention she has our contact info. So okay, we left some of our stuff like a lot of clothes, kitchen items, etc. until we got our truck back from my dad again. I went Saturday night to get something and all of it was gone! We received no notice nor did we give permission to go in there. Our rent is definitely paid (we have the papers), and we have not been evicted and aren't in any other kind of trouble with them. I see no just cause for her to have gone and removed our things. I haven't been able to contact them all weekend and when I called first thing this morning the office is like we will call you back. WTF any insight?? I have no idea where our things are!

  • Does anyone know anything about dyeing a dress?

Like what kind of material takes dye well, what kind of person should I take it to, etc. I want a pale pink, very informal dress to get married in. But my color seems to be hard to come by. Someone suggested that a find a nice informal white gown and dye it. Do you recommend this?

  • Having a small backyard wedding and . . .?

I don't want to wear white, because we are waiting until my fiance gets over his disability totally before we have the big ceremony. I'm looking for either a very pale pink or pale "something blue" colored very informal, airy, long dress. I don't really see anything I like at David's Bridal or Alfred Angelo, so I'm wondering if anyone knows what another sort of large chain bridal shop or just a good place for wedding or mainly bridesmaids dresses? Thanks!

  • hi, i have a question about the drug suboxone . . .?

thanks in advance for your answers! i was addicted to oxycontin, heroin, and general pain killers for about six years. i decided to turn my life around and i went to the methadone clinic, however i was tired of being a junkie and i decided to begin taking suboxone in an effort to kick everything once and for all. i read excellent reviews about how this drug has saved people's lives who abused opiates, and i am confident it will be right for me. however, i did not ask my doctor about the interaction with my other medication and he is obviously not in his office anymore today and i am starting to have a slight withdrawal type ache. i took only two milligrams earlier today which is probably not enough, i just was not sure how it would interact with me. i take klonipin (.5 mgs t.i.d.) and primidone (mysoline, 50 mgs b.i.d.) for anxiety and panic disorder. does anyone have any experience with this medication? if so, i would appreciate your input very much :-)

also, should i feel like i am loaded while on this? i was expecting it to be different from methadone... but i still feel that loaded kind of feeling if that makes any sense...?

    thanks all!

  • Anyone know a good resource to report a substandard shelter in Louisiana or nationwide?

We adopted two pit puppies and they were in horrible shape. We wound up having to put them down the very next afternoon. This was a misstep on the part of the shelter and a 'pit bull rescue group'. I want this shelter shut down.
