Pleased to meet you all! Often times I am a lurker, but sometimes I do come out of my shell to participate and answer questions. But how do I know what I am talking about? I am a Liscensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) and also have a Bachelor's degree in Biological Science (emphasis on animal science). I am currently debating about going back to school for my Masters in Companion Animal Behavior Analysis and Counseling. So I have the knowledge of many things about your pets, I just have to figure out how to tell you about it. I have special interests in nutrition, integrative veterinary medicine, and canine performence - such as agility, flyball, dock diving, rally, and maybe one day conformation handling. If you ever have questions or want more info, just send me a message and I will try to reply!
Eco Friendly pet health tips?
Hi everyone!
I am currently working on a newsletter for the vet clinic where I work and was looking for quick input. The theme is "Going Green: Eco friendly pet tips" and will cover natural foods, biodegradable litter, composting, and other environmentally friendly products on the market for pet care. Any suggestions on what you do to promote a green pet (cat, dog, fish, pocket pet, horse, anything!) would be greatly appreciated. I just recieved the assignment today and would love to hear from as many of you as possible as soon as possible.
Tell me what you do to go green. Even if it just using recycled materials, I would love to hear and share your suggestions (with your permission - so if you post, it may be published, so by posting here you are giving permission!) with our community, staff, and clientele.
Also - is there one big area of focus you are interested in as pet owners? While the major article will focus on tips in general, I have a secondary and tertiary article to address a particular area of eco friendly pet care in depth. What specific themes would you (as a pet owner) want to know more about? Would you rather read more about natural diets, grooming, waste disposal, specific products.. etc?
Thank you in advanced for all of your ideas and input. If any of you are interested in reading the final product, let me know and I will link you to it (it is posted online as well).
Just as a note so no one gets upset - I will be posting this question under general pet, dogs, and cats to make sure I can recieve a wider range of answers!

3 AnswersDogs1 decade agoBest books for alternative veterinary medicine?
Can anyone tell me what some of the best books on alternative (meaning holistic, homeopathic, organic, etc.) veterinary medicine are? I'm looking for books that cover natural feeding, use of supplements, and alternatives to conventional medicine in companion animals.
I know there are a lot of informational sources out there, but I wanted to know what you would recommend. Websites, journals, magazines, articles, and books all welcome.
Just tell me what you recommend and why!

Alright, so I've read about it, read reviews about it, but I want you to tell me about it. I currently use Arm & Hammer Multi Cat Clumping litter, which works great! Minimal odors, clumps great, and I have never had the problem of my cat not using his litter box.
But... I want to be more eco friendly. As an advocate of integrative alternative veterinary medicine, I feel as though I should find a litter that works as well as my clumping clay pollutant with all the advantages of the wheat/pine/corn based products on the market now.
So tell me about your experiences with different cat litter or even automatic cat boxes. Swheat Scoop? Feline Pine? Yesterday's News? Worlds Best Cat Litter?
With everyone natural feeding, is anyone out there using a natural cat litter? Or is clay still reigning supreme.
3 AnswersCats1 decade agoAtypical Bates Body?
A shot in the dark, but my cat recently went through a bout of vomiting and lethargy. We took radiographs and found an opacity in the crainial abdomen - in the area of the pancreas, below the stomach and at the ventral lobes of the liver. It is round and 'eggshell' like. A veterinarian on the VIN network suggested an atypical bates body.
My own veterinarians are not familiar with this and was wondering if anyone else has had experience with a bates body. To my knowledge, it has to do with necritized fat and typically is seen in older, obese animals. It is not suposed to cause any problems, simply exist. My cat is only 2 yrs old and in pretty good body score. He no longer has clinical symptoms.
So I'm just putting it out there to see if any one else has had experience with a Bates Body or knows anything about them. Thanks for any information you may be able to provide.
3 AnswersCats1 decade agoPros and Cons: Evo vs Wellness?
I am not going to get into the foods I have fed, but I have a two year old DSH that is indoor only. I am currently trying to decide on his new food as I want to go more natural, but not homecooked or raw. I thought I had already chosen the food but I started second guessing myself.
I originally chose Innova Evo because I liked that it was virtually a raw diet in a dry form. However, my concerns have become the high phosphorus content that can contribute to kidney disease, as well as the use of DL-methionine to acidify the cat's urine. While a more acidic urine does adecrease the chance of getting struvite crystals, it does increase the chance of having calcium oxalate crystals (a crystal that was not seen prior to the treatment of cats with struvites with DL methionine to acidify the urine pH).
After my concerns about EVO I did even more research and began to think about using Wellness Indoor Formula. I want to hear your opinions on these foods, preferably from experience.
