  • Do most British live within walking distance of a pub?

On British shows they often show people walking to the pub regardless if they live in the city or rural. In the States zoning laws generally prohibit serving alcohol within a certain number of miles of houses or schools. They don’t want children exposed to drunken patrens.

Is this just a British TV fantasy or do most live within walking distance to a pub?

  • Would you replace a copper water pipe if you knicked it?

I was drilling in a wall and hit a couple water pipes. One leaked and i repaired it but the other two anrent leaking. They’re very tight in a small place so I couldn’t solder in there so I’d have to use shark bites. If you knicked the pipes good but they don’t leak could you replace them?

  • If you damaged a copper pipe would you replace it or leave it alone if it doesn’t leak?

I was drilling in a wall and burst one 1/2” copper line and nicked two others pretty good. Wish I was allowed to upload pix. I repaired the leak but the nicks are in difficult places so I couldn’t solder a repair would have to use shark bites. So if it’s not leaking now would you cut it out and shark bites of leave it alone?

  • Do all British people love walking distance to a pub?

In British shows people always walk to the pub. They never need to drive. In the states zoning laws generally prevent bars from being near housing developments or anywhere near schools.

  • Is "soliciting" a crime in the U.K.?

I know that in the U.K. an attorney is referred to as a "solicitor". In the US the crime (criminal tort) of prostitution is called "soliciting". Is it far to assume that term is not used in the U.K.? Would lead to confusion between who s the accused and who s the councilor :)

  • Why are the brackets on braces different shapes?

I just got metal braces for 3 months until I can move into Invisilign. The brackets on my eye teeth have a very sharp spear on the bottom who's only purpose is to cause my mouth to bleed. The other brackets are just square. If I touch these spears it makes my fingers bleed. What is the purpose of this? I don't have rubber bands.

  • Why do braces need to have sharp edges? As an engineer it seems like it would be simple to round the edges.?

I have to have metal braces for 3 months before having a cracked tooth replaced (can't set the implant before making some slight movements). I understand that the interface between the brackets and the wire needs to have certain catches but I can't see why you'd want the edges to be sharp. Also, it would be trivial to design the wire in the back to not cut you. You do this in aircraft all the time. We use basically the same metal safety wire and you never leave the ends in a place that will cut technicians when working in the area.

  • Can you repair a DE filter rip?

My DE filter has a rip on one of the inside folds right at the base. There isn't enough material at the base to sew it. A new filter is over $300 (60 sq-ft) so I'd like to repair it or block that channel if possible.

  • Is it normal to need to replace the o-ring gasket on my DE filter every 2 years?

I have a 60 sq-ft DE pool filter. Despite being super careful not to pull on it it stretches a bit each time I clean the filter. Eventually it gets difficult to get a good seal. Is this common?

  • Can officers write notes in cryptography?

I received a traffic citation last month. I was very nice to the officer but I did mention I'd probably request her notes afterwards (probably a mistake).

So I got her notes now. She wrote 2 long paragraphs. But its not clear if they are in English, it looks like doctor script or something. In contrast the citation side looks like beautiful calligraphy. Clearly she didn't want me to read her notes.

I wanted to use her notes as a basis to decide if I wanted to fight the ticket or take traffic school, now I can't do that. In my county traffic school is only a pre-trial diversion, so if I fight the ticket traffic school is no longer an option.

Is there a standard for readability of officer notes?

  • How much chit-chat are you required to have with a police officer?

If you get stopped as part of a traffic stop, random DUI check point or just detained while walking down the street how much chit-chat are you required to engage in? I live in a town with a large police force and virtually no crime. So the PD is mostly bored. Its also somewhat expensive to live here and most officers don't live in town or know city residence. As a result they'll often phish for things to write citations for. They'll ask you random question like where you're going, where you buy gas, what model your car is. But they're not being friendly they're searching for any stretch of something to cite you for. They also force you to engage by pointing out something stupid ("if that tail light goes out its a $200 fine") and they will ask if you understand. They will not let you go until you say you understand them. At this point I've lived here long enough that I"m just sick of it. I've never committed a crime so I don't feel I should have to talk to cops. So legally, I know to ask "am I being detained". But when they say "Yes, I'm asking you questions" how much chit-chat do you have to endure? Its kind of hard to file a complaint because an officer is talkative but am I legally required to chat with them? Is there any case law establishing limits of this type of thing?

  • Do people from N Ireland resent being called British?

Does the passport just day "UK" or does it also refer to the name of the people? If so does it say "British"? (wikipedia says its correct to call them all British but I wonder if the Irish dislike that).

  • Why would you need to resurface a gunite pool?

My pool is about 20 years old. I've heard some folks talk about resurfacing their pools. I have no idea why you'd do this Is it because the color is changing? Is it because they have visible cracks? I think my pool is fine but I guess I don't know what I'm looking for. I do have several rock features that extend below the water line and there are some visible cracks in the masonry but it doesn't appear to be any type of problem. Chemicals seem to stay in balance and the water is clear. I run the temp around 85F.
