  • why does light blur when looking past it, and viewing point in motion?

Take a lit candle and set it up in front of a mirror or blank wall, now looking at the reflection in the mirror or past it to the wall, and swing your head side to side level with the flame. You should notice the flame light drags and blurs, but when looking directly at the flame, there is no dragging and blurring. I am curious what this effect is.

  • Can a buddhist help me understand this issue?

I have found in many different scenarios that the consumption of alcohol and intoxicants as well as the practice of occult wisdom is considered a negative practice in Buddhism. Is this because merely for the distraction element, and if so, shouldn't the mind be able to overcome the chaos?

  • is it possible for an ethno-biologist to not culturally disseminate and thereby destroy the subject?

Especially when that ethno-biologist or anthropologist is a religious person, and the subject that they study has very different beliefs or a very different world view... i know that the skeptic seeps out of everyone, and i've witnessed it often... also have been the skeptic. But observing something that offers details and evidence that may convince others, there is always the skeptic tearing away at the ideas that might possibly be pieces in the puzzle.

Example: the possible evidence of alien encounters with ancient civilizations and the subsequent arguments that evidence is 'just interpreted that way through the particular lens we look through'.

  • amp and one speaker cab, ohms and number of cables used, math?

question phrases stupidly, but I tried to summarize.

If I have an amp with two outputs and it is stated 4 or 8 ohms... and one speaker cabinet rated at 4ohms... how would i generally need to cable it up? two cables or just one? I would be using ONE 4 ohm speaker cabinet.

I am thinking that an 8ohm speaker cabinet would require just one cable...

am I off or is this right?

bloody ohms make my anus itch!

  • Greeting a Police Officer without drawing too much attention and still being respectful?

I may not physically, socially, or generally appear to be a person who has a great respect for the United States Police Force, and though I may not completely agree with the lays of this nation, I still have a great respect for the Officers that serve to protect the freedoms and safety of people here.

Now, my question: as a pedestrian, bicyclist, or behind the wheel of an automobile, I feel that it is disrespectful for myself to ignore the Officers when they pass, or I pass them. I generally will give them space when passing them, slowing my vehicle not a great amount but a safe speed to pass, just in case. Now a gesture of waving would be, I feel, not only distracting, but also a bit obscene... as would trying to make eye contact in a motor vehicle... that seems a bit suspicious, and would draw too much wasted attention. A friendly nod or tap of the hat seems most appropriate, but I am curious what Officers feel about the citizen awareness of their presence.

I am 32 and look like a mixture between a weirdo hippie and an average guy. I used to get hassled for looking like a skinhead back when I was in HS, though I wasn't, and got pulled-over several times in my early 20's probably because I look(ed) like a dope-smoker... but I am a respectful guy and usually there was a brief friendly conversation and that was that... I am an alternative-styled person that doesn't' really fit the general profile of pro-Police.

    Thanks.

  • quick-flying mosquito-eating avians?

in the warmer days of the year such as late Spring to middle Summer i enjoy watching these small birds in open spaces flying around with the quickness catching mosquitoes and other flying insects... I assumed that they were Sparrows, but someone told me that that was wrong... i recall the wing pattern very angular ... I live in Pacific NW btw...

in the form of a question, can anyone who has observed these lovely avian aviators clue me on what their identity is?

  • what film is this, a fantasy-comedy?

ok, disclaimer... my memory of this is from a kid so...

I recall a story of two brothers, maybe they could feel a stab when the other was poked (I say maybe because I may be confusing two films here). MOST IMPORTANTLY: there was a motif of immortality associated with a magical flute, and that one of the brothers actually became the flute or died and somehow became a tree, and someone came along and made a flute from one of the branches and when playing the flute he came back to life.

This image has been bugging me a lot lately as I'd really like to know what film this is.

I think that it is a fantasy comedy.

  • using a 120W speaker 8ohms with 60W tube amp 8ohms?

I have a 60 watt Fender tube amp that has an auxiliary speaker output of 8 ohms and knowing that ohms is very important to match, can doubling the wattage of the speaker affect the amp?

I used to have a Marshall 100 watt tube amp and used a 300 watt speaker with it because I was told that the speaker cabinet could handle that just fine.

I love my Fender amp, I do not want to take chances with it.

    thanks.

  • 'Dry' percussion, 'dry' drums, 'dry' tone, 'dry'?

I keep hearing drummers and percussionists and sellers of instruments using the term 'dry' for the sound of their instruments. I made comment of how I like to put a piece of cloth on the drums to dampen the sound and the person I was speaking with said 'oh, you like a dry tone?'... Or looking at cowbells, I liked the cowbell that was listed as being a 'dry'-toned cowbell. I noticed that it had very little overtones and a short decay/resonance.

Help me to find my answer. I have searched online to no avail.

  • A two-syllable word for 'battlefield'?

I am attempting to write a phrase with a descriptor of battle-space measurement, and the descriptor needs to be two syllables. Currently I have in place the conjunction 'battlefield', but it flows poorly with the three syllables. Any suggestions are appreciated.

First, I don't know if this is the problem, if I need to format the disc or not (I just bought a SATA hard drive and an external SATA case, put them together, and plugged them into my laptop... computer recognizes that there is a USB mass storage device but I do not see it in My Computer like with my other HD)... Second, I just feel sort of stupid.

  • Detecting different types of USB ports?

With different types of USB ports on my laptop and no hard map, how do I tell the different ratings of the ports (power and bandwidth)? Can I somehow find this info in a Properties route or by a hardware plug-in device?

My problem is that with some of my external USB-powered hard-drives and with my USB-to-MIDI connector the connection is weak or not complete... I am having problems, IOW.
