  • Is there such a thing as a NON-web-based email?

Whenever you bookmark Yahoo! Mail it shows up on your bookmark list like this:

Yahoo! Mail: The best web-based email!

Is that a redundancy or am I missing something?

  • Why does Yahoo! bother giving you the option to appeal a violation on Answers?

...when it's pretty obvious that any refutation is ultimately to fall on deaf ears?

  • Why, in these troubled times, should the government protect people from themselves?

...and in so doing, close off a whole market that would create new businesses, jobs, and more stuff to tax (yes, drugs can be taxed)? During the Depression, one of the first things FDR did after elected was to repeal the Prohibition; said we couldn't afford it. Why not end the war on drugs?

(got this question from an interview between Bill Maher and Ron Paul, just wanted to get feedback from more people)

  • Which is a better Batman flick?

Tim Burton's 1989 classic or Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight?

I'm conflicted about this. Being that I spent most of my childhood in the 90's, I was obsessed with Tim Burton's film. IMO, the Dark Knight is the first film since that's really comparable. I think it's technically better; the overall cinematography and acting in Dark Knight are on par, but the writing for it is far superior to that of the original 1989 Batman. But I still can't bring myself to say it's really better. Maybe it's just nostalgia but I think I will always regard Tim Burton's Batman as my favorite. I guess it's a bias.

Oh and I think that Jack Nicholson acted the part of Joker way better than Ledger, but the Joker was better written in the Dark Knight.

    Thoughts?

  • Anyone else in love with the new "Batman: Gotham Knight" anime movie?

Just wondering. I'm not really a big anime fan, but IMO this movie has the most comprehensive portrayal of Batman ever. I went into it, hoping it would tide me over until the new Dark Knight movie, but now I'm wondering if the Dark Knight can even match it. Anyone else pleasantly surprised?

  • How do you dispute a violation?

I got violated on a question that was not phrased as a question.

    I wrote: "Atheists: Define God?"

I could have just as easily wrote: "Atheists: How do you define God?"

This is HORSESH1T! Talk about semantics.

Whatever, now I know someone is gonna violate this too.

    Go ahead.

  • Do you ever wait for a better time to ask your questions?

Just wondering. I do because I hate it when I ask a really thoughtful question at like 1a.m. and only get a couple responses. And really, what's the point in extending the length of time my question is open? Oh and sometimes when I decide to wait, through the course of the day, I end up forgetting what I was going to ask--ANNOYING!

Oh, and when do think the best time is?

  • Free will?

What's your take on it? The typical dichotomy is that either we do not have free will, and thus can take no responsibility for our actions, or we do have free will and implicit in that is that we must take total responsibility for our lives.

I don't believe in fate, but as much as I'd like to agree with Sartre and the like, I've begun to think that we are nearly completly free of all responsibility. Chance is something that I think must be taken into account. For example, you get a promotion at your job, is it because of all your hard work? Well, no. Actually, hard work has very little to do with it. You likely had co-workers that have been working just as hard as you. We all remember when we were kids and would exclaim, "That's not fair!" to our parents, apalled at the injustice of it all. Of course, the typical pareneal response is, "Life's not fair." And it isn't!

  • Why do you believe in God?

I know there have no doubt been a lot of other questions like this. I'm really looking for a more intellectual line of reasoning. I mean, give me something better than "Everything is just so amazing!" I'm also NOT looking for anything to do with the I.D. movement, I know you guys think you're really smart but I don't, and I've heard enough about the bacterial flagellin, thank you.

I want to keep this strictly philosophical. Descartes, an early 17th Century French philosopher, locked himself away in a shack as to find a secular arguement FOR God (Descartes was the guy who coined the phrase, "I think, therefore I am"). The basic idea was that if God is real, it could be possible to follow a path of logic that makes it universally accepted and apparent to everyone. I don't expect anyone on here to accomplish that, but aim high!

  • Is it rude to only order 1 drink at a bar?

I still tip 20%. Just wondering because I got some weird looks from bar tenders when I told them to close my tab after 1 drink on a couple different occasions.

  • My dog's an asshole!?

Okay so, my dog is an older dog, and my brother just got this new puppy. The puppy keeps trying to play with him, but instead of playing back, my dog just gets really still and growls; if it goes on long enough he'll snap at the puppy angrily. How do I get my dog to play nice?
