  • Do you need any kind of Engineering background before training to be a marine engineer?

I am currently torn between becoming a Deck Office or Marine Engineer. I have heard becoming a Marine Engineer is a better option long term career wise, and I've always liked to know how engines work... but I've never really gained any kind of real engineering knowledge at school or since I left. Would this be an issue at all?

  • How serious is the ligament/tendon pain in my knee?

I was playing football (soccer) the other day, and as I was kicking the ball I was off balance, my standing foot was underneath me and I went down quite quickly, all my weight went down on the one knee quickly as I twisted a little bit.

Anyway, I could carry on playing, nothing much wrong it seemed. But when I got home, crouching down to get something there was a sharp pain on the back of my knee. It feels as if it s been stretched too far.

Im able to carry on with normal life, I was running the other day but it was hurting a little bit. I only get a sharp pain when I crouch down putting weight on it or crossing my legs etc. Does it seem serious at all, will I able to let it heal naturally?

    Thanks for reading!

  • Car making a scraping sound?

This started happening earlier today. I hadn t driven the car for a couple of days and it was fine before this.

However, when I got in the car today and starting driving, it sounded as if there was something stuck, creaking or scraping underneath the left front wheel of the car. The car, although it pulled to the left slightly already, not it pulls a lot more, so much so that inside edge of the left tyre was flaking off, being burnt off. Just wondering what this could be?

I just find it strange why it suddenly started as soon as I started to move, even though it was completely fine when I was in the car a few days previously.

Any help would be appreciated! Thank you

  • Can you exercise certain muscles that have trigger points?

I have several muscles which have a few trigger points in them (sternocleidomastoid, trapezius, suboccipitals, gluteus medius are a few in a fairly long list)

I was just wondering if exercising these specific muscles in some way can release the trigger points to some extent? The therapy and pressing the trigger points by itself do not seem to be working.

I've lived with it for a long time, been in some muscles for years, and it's never really seemed to go away. They cause headaches, back pain, all sorts of problems, and I'm tired of it!

So if anyone could answer my main question about exercise, and maybe some other things that can help release trigger points, I would be very grateful!

    Thank in advance :)

  • What kind of headache do I have?

I recently had a health scare, which put me under a lot of stress, after a couple of months I started getting these headaches, but I've not been able to figure out which type it is, as it seems to have a mix of tension, sinus headaches and migraines, here's a list of what my headaches are like.

-headaches go away when I'm busy concentrating on something, it's normally when I'm thinking about it that it comes about

-the pain is normally when I press into the top of my eye socket, but it has been more over one eye the past few days, like a migraine. sometimes it's on the top of my head, like a hangover headache, it's not often though it's like that though.

-there's no throbbing of any kind, ever

-the pain can last for anywhere between a few minutes to a few hours.

-the pain isn't that bad, it's not severe, it's just a dull ache, but it's not enough to put me off doing anything, it just makes me lose a bit of concentration because I start focusing on it. They are more annoying than anything.

-it can sometimes feel like pressure, and I have a blocked nose sometimes, but that's not often as well

-the headaches can be regular throughout the day for a few days, but sometimes they've gone away for up to a couple of weeks at a time.

-my eyes hurt when I look at far left and right as I can.

-the sun can hurt my eyes as soon as I step out of the door outside, but that only last for a couple of seconds max, after that I'm fine

Can anyone help distinguish what kind of headache this is? Answers would be very appreciated!

On a side note, just wondering, can these headaches go away for good without having to take medication at all? I would hate to have to be on a prescription :/

  • Is this a good price for my first 125?

Just got in touch with a Suzuki motorcycle dealer and they said that the bike I have been looking at would cost me £103 a month for 36 months with a £99 deposit. Is this a good price to pay? it doesn't come with insurance on top either.

I have looked at used bikes. However I would have peace of mind if it was new, and if something went wrong, it was because of something that happened when it was in my hands, and not someone else's you know?

Any answers would be appreciated, thanks!

  • Do you believe it's best to say what you think rather than hold back?

Always thought it lends itself to the situation that you're in, but what do you guys think?

  • Is there a fighting style/discipline that neutralises opponents instead of actual fighting?

Any kind of discipline, like Karate or Taekwondo that isn't about defeating someone, but rather neutralising them and stopping them from attacking you. For example, a drunk person throws a punch, and instead of retaliating, you block the punch and put them on the floor with their arms behind their back or something like that, if you get my drift.

    Thanks!

  • why is my download speed so slow?

Okay, this is the information i have for you, hopefully some of you internet experts will be able to help me??

Basically, I have the O2 wireless box II, we've had it for about 3 years now, the same box. When we first got it, the download speeds were fine, things downloaded onto my box quickly and youtube videos buffered fine. But now, and its been like this for a few months now, but i have to wait an eternity for videos to buffer, and I just timed something which was downloading onto my Xbox, and it came out to 0.04mb per sec, which is shocking considering the area that I live in should be getting about 1-3mb/ps. I used to be able to find about 40 games on 50ms ping as well, but now it finds about 1 game at about 150ms ping

Just wondering why its like this and what steps i should take to get it back to how it was?

  • I would like a spritual guide?

Are there any sort of following that I can undertake which does not involve looking up to a god, but a kind of guide to help people through difficult times? I'm probably making no sense, but If there's any kind of thing or being that I could look up to to help me with advice or something similar. Don't say Christianity or Islam, or any other religion, because I'm not into following a certain set of rules about how I should live my life and have their own set of ideas and principles on things. I have nothing against it, but just don't believe in God, Jesus and the stories in the bible etc.

I am most likely making no sense at all, and you may be thinking "what the hell is he on about?" but it's hard to describe what I mean haha.

  • Cat is not being himself?

For about a week now, one of our cats has not been himself at all. Hes usually the one pestering us for food the most and being the most inquisitive etc.

Recently though he isn't eating that much, he's always sleeping (I know they sleep more than 12 hours a day) but he's sleeping much more than normal, only getting up to move somewhere else to lay down. His breath smells a bit, and he's not looking after himself because his fur is all spiky and not smooth, if you know what I mean. He doesn't like being picked up now, he doesn't scratch but he squirms pretty much straight away and gets irritated after a few seconds, he also doesn't like his face being touched either, which is unlike him. His meow is also quite cracked and husky compared to what it normally is.

The thing is though, he's only 3 years old and he's a house cat so he's never really properly exposed to diseases and such. As you can tell I'm no cat health expert but there is obviously something wrong with him, does anyone know what it could be, or has had cats with similar symptoms? Thanks guys

  • Can symptoms arise by thinking you have a virus/infection/disease?

If you think you have got a virus, infection and therefore look up the symptoms, can your body react in such a way that it produces these symptoms through anxiety or stress?

  • How to improve internet connection speed?

About 3 years ago when we got the wireless box that we have now, connection was really good. Youtube videos loaded quickly, there was no lag on the xbox, always found lots of games in 50ms ping even though my NAT type was strict, and things didn't take long at all to download in general. But now, it seems to go at walking speed.. normal internet browsing is fine, but videos take AGES to buffer, a 3 minute video would take about 5-10 minutes to completely load up, and updates on the xbox take an age (recently had a 1.5gb update on Battlefield 3 and it took TWELVE hours, ridiculous, had to leave it on overnight and then some)

Just wondering if theres any way I can improve the time it takes to download and buffer things, or is it just my broadband box dying of old age?? It's an O2 wireless box II, and I live in the burbs of a town, so its not like we should have bad connection because of our location or whatever. If anyone could help me in terms of speeding this up, I would be really grateful, thanks!

  • Is there an equivalent to regiments and such in the Royal Navy?

Are there branches and things for people in similar jobs? eg- Divers, Chaplains, Engineers etc, or are they only recognised by what ship they're currently on? Sorry for sounding clueless! Always wanted to know how they sort out where people are stationed.

  • REALLY worried about being infected with HIV?

It's been nine days since I had unprotected sex, and today, im starting to get a tight chest with a minor cough, and sometimes I get really hot and uncomfortable for no reason, but then it goes away after about 5-20 minutes. The sides of my neck do the same, they start to ache for about 5 minutes and then it goes away for a few hours. You could call me a hypochondriac, but I am very scared because I'm only 18 with a lot of ambitions to be successful in life, and I don't want to die early. I am male as well by the way, heterosexual, intercourse was with an 18 year old girl as well. Also when's the earliest I can do a conclusive HIV test? Thanks, really appreciate any good answers.

  • Have I contracted HIV?

I had unprotected sex on Wednesday night with a girl I don't know, and apparently she's had lots of sexual partners. 4 days later, im starting to feel a bit ill, a bit dizzy and sweaty. I've looked at symptoms online and they all say that feeling feverish is the first sign of HIV, and I'm getting worried because im not myself, can anyone help?

  • How long does an open wound take to heal?

Okay, so I banged my foot really hard on a chair yesterday, I know, stupid. And I got a fairly deep cut around a half an inch long, but i could see into it. Its where my fourth toe attaches to the actual foot, it starts halfway along and goes into the gap between the third and fourth toe. it's pretty hard to explain so sorry for the long description. But I was just wondering how long this could take to heal, and what I can do to quicken the healing process? I'm not going to walk on it, because if I do, when the toes stretch, the wound will open. But yeah, answers are really appreciated

  • Are Derbi a reliable motorcycle manufacturer?

I've been looking at a few Derbi bikes, on their website, on forums and stuff, and most say that for reliability, the best thing to do is to stick with the four Japanese manufacturers otherwise you'll run into problems. Just wondering if Derbi are any good for reliability? The bike I'm looking at is the Senda Baja 125 if that helps at all. Cheers!
