  • I have a pasta machine, is it supposed to work like this?

As I turn the handle, only one of the rollers turns, so the pasta isn't being rolled out flat, only scrunched-up. We thought we'd managed to make it work right, because, just once, they both turned, but then it stopped again.

    Any ideas?

  • Why doesn't somebody sue fake software "vendors"?

I got one of those programs that pretends to have found faults on a perfectly working computer. It stops you killing it, running task manager, installing antimalware software or running IE. Since the computer is my employer's, I can't do anything much to it anyway. It will be embarrassing, though, and I may need to reinstall the data, which is not a problem, it's backed-up (twice) because I'm not stupid.

    SO, given that

These programs must cause havoc all over the World,

Especially in the "land of the free" where the compensation culture is endemic,

And that to get rid of it, you have to pay some crook, online,

Who must be traceable from a bank account,

Why has nobody sued? Or have they done it and got nothing?

  • If I hired a motor boat, is it possible to park in Venice?

Like all Englishmen, I think I would be pretty good at driving a motor boat, (how hard can it be?) though I have no independent evidence and little real experience to confirm this. I know you can hire cabin cruisers from at least one company based around the lagoon, can anyone tell me how easy it is to do this.

Details like - Is it possible to just drive into Venice and park, or go to the other islands, Burano, for example, would be really helpful.

  • What's the best processor at the moment? (Jul 2010)?

I want to put together a new PC, doing mostly simple things, but on a fairly tight budget, say, £500.

What do you think is best for somebody not into hot gaming or video processing (though I do convert DVDs to watch on my mp4 player). I'm thinking dual processor, maybe only single processor even, don't see the need for quad, but perhaps put money into fast RAM. It would also be nice to reduce power consumption, as the PC is on for 4 to 8 hours a night. So, what's the best value for money processor now?

Processor budget, say, up to £100 (also known as 100GBP, about 117 euros, $150)

Note - not too patronising, please, I have been building and mending PCs since the days of the 8086, but need up-to-date advice this time.
