I have a pasta machine, is it supposed to work like this?

As I turn the handle, only one of the rollers turns, so the pasta isn't being rolled out flat, only scrunched-up. We thought we'd managed to make it work right, because, just once, they both turned, but then it stopped again.

Any ideas?

Update:

Or is it my pasta dough?

Check out the machine. Sounds like it's skipping. I mean the gears could be not in total contact with each other. Sometimes dried pasta from the previous use gets stuck in the gears. I've got the pasta roller attachment for my kitchen aid(it's fabulous) and this happens once in a while. Try a little oil on the gears. Remember not to wash it either. It'll rust and then get stuck too.

What setting do you have it on? When you first put dough through, it should be set at the widest opening. You do that a few times and then go one by one through the settings down to the lowest opening.

Add: If the dough is too sticky, it won't go through.

Your pasta needs to be coated on both sides with a lot of flour. Otherwise, it will jam your machine. Don't be afraid to coat the pasta with more than you think you need.

Is your dough too thick?? roll it out thinner.

Or too sticky??? Try adding some flour so its not so sticky.
