  • How do I update an individual app on my Kindle Fire HD (2nd edition)?

I've called amazon and am have been in communication with one of their techs since yesterday but even the techs are having trouble helping me. The issue is that I cannot play my Amazon Prime music on my Kindle Fire HD (2nd edition). I just bought this unit because my previous one died on me. I have it registered to my Amazon account and I can watch Prime videos, so the issue is not that I'm not registered or linked to Prime. My Kindle is also in the most current version of software.

The issue is that the Amazon mp3 app has for some reason not updated and that is why I cannot play my Prime music. We've tried clearing the cache and force stopping it and then hitting sync and leaving it for a full day, but that hasn't worked. Can anyone think of another way to update this app? Or do you have any idea what can be going wrong with this?

As I said, even the techs seem to be stumped but they say they are still working on it. Thanks for any help you can give me!

  • Business card title for a student organization?

I am starting a new student organization at my university and I'm thinking I'd like to get business cards made. It is an advocacy and fundraising group for refugees, so the cards would help when it comes time to get sponsors and donations for events.

My question is, what title is appropriate? I was thinking "Founder & President", or "Founder, President". Which one looks better (the "and" sign or the comma)? Or should I just have either "Founder" or "President"? I want to convey that I did indeed start the group AND that I am involved in everything. Does putting only "Founder" give the sense that I am uninvolved? Does putting only "President" leave off the idea that I started the group?

Any help you can give me is appreciated! I'm new at this and even though this is a student group, I want to get our name out to the community so that we can raise money for refugees, so I want to look professional.

  • AmeriCorps application, need help with transferable skills?

    Hello,

I'm filling out an online AmeriCorps application and it asks applicants to check skills that programs may find useful. I'm trying to figure out what skills I can check given my job history. I've been a swimming pool manager, lifeguard, and swim instructor for many years. The skills I'm wondering if it would be appropriate for me to check are Conflict Resolution, Teaching/Tutoring, and Youth Development.

I have resolved various conflicts as a pool manager since I have routinely interacted with the public, but I haven't used any specific conflict resolution "methods"; is that important? As a swim instructor I've obviously taught children, but I don't know if they mean teaching school subjects only. And the most important one I would like to check but don't know if I should is Youth Development. As a swim instructor I am involved with improving the health of youth, and I work for the YMCA, where they stress "core values" like responsibility, respect, etc., and I do teach and talk to the kids about this.

Are these experiences in my job enough to list that I have training or experience in them? I will have to elaborate on each of the skills I check so I want to be sure it sounds like I'm not stretching and that I do actually have these skills. Any help you can give me is appreciated. I'd especially like to hear from someone who works in HR or who works with AmeriCorps, but any feedback will help. Thank you!

  • Why did the media say that Matt Bomer came out as gay?

I'd like your thoughts on this: Not too long ago various media (mostly online news and entertainment sources) ran headlines that said that Matt Bomer (an actor) came out as gay. Do we not understand sexual orientation yet? What I mean is that Bomer did not say "I'm gay", what he did was publicly acknowledge his family - "Simon and [his kids]". Simon is his husband (we assume this because they both wear bands). Bomer very well may be gay, but my point is that we don't know this because he didn't say this. He could be bisexual or pansexual or whatever - unless we know the inner workings of the man's mind, I don't understand why people speculate and jump to the conclusion that he is gay. He "came out" as being in a gay relationship, he did not come out as gay - there is a difference.

Bisexual (and pansexual, etc.) people can be in committed relationships with either or any gender so acknowledging a relationship doesn't say one way or another about orientation. And the thing is, it shouldn't matter. I'm very happy for Bomer and his family, he seems like a sweetheart and I'm glad he publicly acknowledged his family. But the very idea of "coming out publicly" seems ridiculous to me and is an unfair double standard that does little in the way of progress. And plus, Bomer never seemed to be hiding his family, he just did not publicly comment and say "this is my family", and I see nothing wrong with this. I don't get why some people think that others should have to publicly make a statement about their minds, hearts, and for whom they feel arousal.

  • Will there be safety precautions in place for the 9/11 memorial (Twin Towers)?

Does anyone know anything about the 9/11 memorial at the Twin Towers site? I'm wondering if there will be any safety precautions put in place for the two pools. Two deep pools (or even shallow pools, for that matter) will become a major hazard for any unattended children. I think having it gated up or anything like that would sort of defeat the purpose and aesthetic of a quiet and powerful tribute, but at the same time I would hate to see anyone drown and add yet another tragic death to this place.

  • Is it normal to have joint and muscle pain with the common cold?

    Hello,

A few days ago I got what I thought was a cold but now I'm wondering if it is something more. When it first came on I had a mild sore throat, a bit of a cough, congestion/sinus pain, slight dizziness, a low fever (I always have a low fever when I get a cold though), and chills. After I took some medicine (acetaminophen and sudafed for sinus) the chills have stopped and I think the fever is gone, but now I have, in addition to the still mild sore throat/cough/congestion, some muscle and joint pain, fatigue/weakness, and most recently - ringing in my ears. I'm most concerned with the muscle and joint pain. It's not constant pain (though I feel constant weakness and fatigue), it is more like stabbing pain (in the muscles it feels like pins and needles that comes and goes and affects various parts of the body) and for the joint pain it is mostly in my small joints (fingers, toes). What do you think about these symptoms? I don't like to run to the doctor for every little thing so I thought I'd ask on here first. Any advice is appreciated!

  • Small lump underarm; history of breast problem?

I have a small lump underneath my left arm, about the size of a pea (I think). It is underneath the skin and seems to be rather hard (doesn't seem like anything fluid filled like a blemish that hasn't come to the surface), and it isn't painful. 6 months ago, I had a left breast duct excision because I frankly bloody discharge. There was no intraductal papilloma nor was there any carcinoma.

Are there any people with medical backgrounds on here who can give me some advice? Should I get this checked by my doctor right away, or do you think I can wait awhile? My insurance is not so good and I'd rather not go to the doctor again. Plus, just because I had this duct excision, I don't want to go running to the doctor any time I get a little bump. But of course, I want to do what is best for my health. What are your opinions?

  • Does beef liver have to be coated in flour?

I've never had liver before, but I know that I like the taste of iron (blood tastes good to me, I know it's weird - and no, I'm not a vampire). I've been looking for beef liver recipes (I'll cook mine with yellow onion and shiitake mushrooms), and all of the recipes say to coat the liver with flour. Why is this done? And is it necessary? If it's meant to take away some of the iron flavor, I don't think I want that. Any help is greatly appreciated!

  • How does the flavor combination of red wine vinegar/vinaigrette and brown sugar sound?

I'm thinking of experimenting with the crockpot, and I've noticed that I love the flavor meat slow-cooked in a brown sugar marinade. I also love the taste of red wine vinegar/vinaigrette. If I combine these two flavors (using probably elk or buffalo stew meat), how do you think it would taste? I don't cook much so I'm pretty clueless when it comes to things like this. Does the flavor combination sound ridiculous or does it sound like it would work? Also, can you think of any other spices or flavorings I might add? I'll cook the stew meat with potatoes, carrots, and possibly a tiny bit of bacon; I could maybe add a smidge of honey too.

  • p90x phase one vegetarian nutrition?

I'm going to be starting p90x soon and the first phase of the nutrition plan says to eat protein/carbs/fat in a ratio of 50%/30%/20%. I'm a vegetarian (pretty much, every now and then I will eat free-range meat), but thus far I've been a bad one - I mostly eat simple carbs. After doing some research I have a good idea of what to eat for complex carbs, but I'm worried that in this first phase of nutrition when I try to get enough protein I will still end up eating too many carbs ( I will be eating tofu and tempeh, and I also just learned of something called Seitan). Besides eggs (which I eat if I can get cage-free), what are sources of low-carb, high-protein for a vegetarian? After my workouts I will be drinking a hemp protein shake, which is also supposed to be really good, but aside from that and eggs, I'm not really sure where to look. Any help is appreciated, thank you!

  • How to make something similar to Dairy Queen chocolate cake crunch?

Dairy Queen used to make a blizzard called Peanut Butter Crunch, and in it was peanut butter flavored soft serve and the chocolate crunch that they use in their ice cream cakes. It was absolutely delicious (I mean c'mon, anything where chocolate and peanut butter is combined is amazing!), but unfortunately they (or at least the ones near my house) don't make this blizzard anymore. I want to try to replicate it somehow, so does anyone know or can guess what that chocolate crunch is? I know it's a "secret recipe" sort of deal so I can't just go and buy it somewhere, but is there any way to replicate it?

I know it's for sure not oreos, but if you have any other suggestions please let me know. Thanks!

  • I want to buy a laptop and I'm technologically challenged - please help?

I'm looking for a very inexpensive laptop or notebook (or whatever else is out there); I'd ideally like to spend under $500. All I need it for is to do research papers, so I need the internet, wordprocessing (microsoft word), a comfortable keyboard (with keys that are not super-flat so I can differentiate between them), a screen that is fair-sized so I can read (I'm flexible with this though), and enough memory to store quite a number of pdf files. I'd also like it to have enough power that I'm not waiting forever when I download a pdf file or another type of file for research, but I'm willing to be a little patient for the right price! I'd also like to be able to hook up a printer to it (I assume all laptops are able to do this, but honestly I'm clueless.). I don't need to watch movies or do any gaming, so I'm not worried about finding one that fits with those type of needs.

I'm a university student (and hopefully going to grad school) for philosophy, so I just need this to do work because it's a drag to drive over to my university everyday to work (it's a half hour commute for me).

As you can see from the question, I'm severely technologically challenged! I know nothing about computers/laptops, so if you would, please let me know of any laptops/notebooks that fit what I need. If you could give me the brand and model that would be great, and a link would be awesome too. Thank you!

  • 100 micrograms Propofol + 70 (or 75) micrograms of Fentanyl for minor surgery?

I just had a minor surgery - left breast duct excision. I didn't want to do any anesthesia but local, but the doctors were pretty insistent that I get some IV sedation. I finally allowed them, but I said no to Versed. I told them I wanted as light as sedation as possible, so that I could still be awake. The anesthesiologist gave me 100 micrograms of Propofol plus 70 or 75 (can't remember which) micrograms of Fentanyl. How does this stack up when comparing dosages of people who go through this type of surgery? The surgery was supposed to take about an hour, but end up going two hours because the surgeon had to go almost all the way back to my chest cavity wall to disect out the bleeding duct. She was surprised that I was able to do so well without Versed or another like drug. She actually said that if she knew before she started that I had such a high pain tolerance that she probably would've let me go without the IV sedation. It was nice that I was able to be awake and talking to her throughout the surgery, though I think the anesthesiologist was a bit annoyed that I was proving him wrong about the Versed!

So I'm just curious, are these doses of Propofol and Fentanyl actually as minor as my doctor and anesthesiologist said, or are they in fact moderate dosages? I'm just wondering if I could've done the surgery without them. I think I could, and my surgeon thinks I could, but I don't know anything about dosages of these drugs.

  • Christians, why do YOU believe that the Bible is the word of God? Evidence?

Where is the evidence? I know there is some sort of "evidence" (like in Lee Strobels' "Case for Christ") but the evidence presented in this book and others like it is not strong; it is too convoluted, and there is too much conjecture and too many fallacies. There is just as much evidence (of this type) for the Qu'ran as there is for the Bible. So why do you believe that the Bible is the word of God and the Qu'ran isn't? But these are MY opinions though; I want to know what sort of evidence YOU think justifies believing that the Bible is the word of God and why YOU think the evidence is strong enough to support the Bible and Christianity and not the Qu'ran and Islam (or any other faith, for that matter).

I was going to ask the question "Why did Jesus need to save us?" - and I know that the answer is because the Bible said there was a Fall in the garden of Eden (though this still doesn't explain why God needed a sacrifice, but that is another matter). So I wanted to get at the major theme of Christianity, which is salvation and I had to take several steps back to the beginning first: why do you believe you must be saved? <---- why do you believe in the Fall? <---- why do you believe that the Bible is the truth and the word of God?

To some of you this question might have come across rude, but know that that wasn't my intention - I'm just sincerely trying to understand why you believe what you believe, because I have trouble sometimes understanding, because to me it is so out there. But I need to try to be more open-minded, so bear with me please!

Thank you for your honest answers.

  • Is "Avatar" another example of White guilt? Racism?

Is the movie "Avatar" another example of "white guilt"? Think of "Dances With Wolves" or "The Last Samurai", where instead of being the conqueror, the white hero becomes a member and then saviour of an indigenous people. Is "Avatar" the latest of these types of movies, and if it is does this mean it is racist? (I mean, is it so hard to think that a Native people could save themselves without the help of a white saviour?)

Or, is the movie simply a way to get humans who see the environment as something to dominate/conquer to think about our environmental practices - and the way to make them (or us, depending on who you are) care is by having a human "see the light" about the environment while being amongst an indigenous race that understands and does not think of the earth as something to be "subdued" or "conquered"?

  • Is the word "Protestant" derogatory?

I came across a question where an answerer had written "Still objecting to being called "Protestant." Implies Catholic is the only other choice and it never was.". Is this a common view among protestants (or I guess non-Catholic and non-Orthodox Christians)? Whenever I say "Protestant" I just mean the sect of Christianity that protested against the Catholic Church in the 16th century. This sect is made up of many denominations but all disagree with various Catholic doctrine. Luther and Calvin and others WERE protesting against and/or trying to reform the Catholic Church (and there were some very real abuses going on), so how is using that word implying that the Catholic church is the only other church? I don't think it implies that at all. Anyway, I don't mean anything at all derogatory when I say the word "Protestant", and I was just wondering how many other Protestants (or again, non-Catholic, non-Orthodox Christians) think it is derogatory. Thank you for any opinions.

  • Okay just wondering, are there two different people called "Fireball" in the R&S section?

I've seen answers from her and sometimes they are genuinely Christian (more compassionate and honest) and other times they are very harsh fundamentalist (very concerned with furthering her own agenda than answering the question). The second one I mentioned seems anti-Catholic and the first one is not. Are there two or am I just crazy? I know this question doesn't really matter, but I'm just curious.

  • Found sites to buy TV's "The Guardian", but don't know if they're reputable? (re-posted from 'computers')?

This show stars Simon Baker. I used to watch it when it was on tv and always wanted to buy the DVDs if they came out with them but I couldn't find them after the show was canceled. With the recent popularity of Baker's new show I remembered to look again and the only places I've found that currently sells them are here

    http://www.dvdone.tv/details.php?pid=595%E2%80%A6

    http://www.planetdvdstore.com/product.ph%E2%80%A6

Does anyone know if these are reputable sites? I don't know... they seem kinda shady. I don't know why the DVDs would be sold on sites like these and not on more mainstream sites, like amazon or barnesandnoble. Does anyone know anything about this, and can tell me if I'm being paranoid or smart for being cautious right now? Thanks.
