  • What does the notation "yr-1", "year-1", or "y-1" mean in a hydrology table?

I'm looking at a table of glacial runoff volume and the figures are expressed in cubic kilometers, with the notation "y-1" after it. (The -1 is an exponent.) I have found a similar notation, "min-1", in flash flood volume tables. What does this notation mean? Thanks!

  • My free RAM is dropping (OSX)?

I have OSX with 1 GB of RAM. After restarting my computer and opening a few programs (the ones I use the most frequently, like Safari and ichat), I can see in the Activity monitor that I have approx. 500 MB of free RAM. Then, ten minutes later the free RAM has dropped to 460 MB, and it's still dropping even though I haven't done anything--I literally have not touched my computer and it's dropping. What is causing this? I've found my free RAM as low as 12 MB, and then when I restarted it and it went right back up over 500 MB.

    THANKS!

  • Driving 170 mph?

If you were driving 170 mph down a straight freeway, in a decent sportscar that can handle the speed without shaking or whatever,

    a. would two people in the car be able to carry on a conversation? would it be loud or quiet inside the car (assume a new car whose engine would not make more than the minimal amount of noise)?

    b. would the people inside the car be able to move, say, their arms around freely? or would it be hard to move? (they're not accelerating, they're just cruising).

    c. how would your hands feel on the steering wheel? assuming that you didn't want to turn the car, only keep going straight, would there be any tension on the steering wheel or would it feel the same as if you were going a normal speed (75mph)?

    this is for a story i'm writing--thanks!

  • meals for one?

i am a single woman with no roommates. i'm a pretty good cook, and a pretty healthy eater. i end up eating the same meals over and over because i (a) don't like lots of leftovers, and (b) try to use as few dishes as possible when i cook, and (c) don't have time to cook for hours. i know this is a tall request, but does anyone have any quick, no-fuss, no-mess recipes that can be made to a single serving? thanks!

  • soup recipes?

  • any good dip recipes?

I'm having a party and want lots of appetizery-stuff but nothing that I have to assemble. I'm thinking of just doing a bunch of different dips with bread and crackers and veggies. I need dip recipes--I don't mind if it's complicated or uses hard-to-find ingredients, and would prefer to have a bunch of stuff that people don't find at every party. Any ideas?
