  • Will I be able to use iMovie on a Macbook Air?

I currently use an aluminum unibody Macbook from Late 2008, but I'm going to college and my whole family uses the current one, so I need a new laptop. I occasionally edit videos on iMovie just for fun, and I was wondering whether a Macbook Air would allow me to do that. People say it's not good if you do a lot of video editing, but will it work for the occasional amateur user, using iMovie not some higher end program?

I currently can get an 13" Air for $750 from Best Buy, or a non Retina Pro from the campus store for $949. I'd rather not spend more than $1000. Is the Air a good idea, or would I be better off spending a bit more on the Pro?

Bonus: If I decide not to run OS X Yosemite (which is about to come out) because it is ugly (I know it sounds stupid, but aesthetics are important to me) how fast do you estimate my laptop will become too outdated to use properly?

  • What should I buy at college instead of bringing there?

I'm going to college across the country, and I don't want to pack more than necessary. I've made a list of things I need, but I feel like there are some things that it would be better to buy at the CVS or other places nearby, instead of shipping it or trying to squeeze it into my luggage. What do you think I should bring with me and what should I wait to buy once I get over there?

  • If you turn down a school, can you go there for grad school?

I was admitted to a few really good colleges, but I'm not sure which to pick. One of them seems to be an undeniable ivy that I'd love to go to for medical school, but another one feels like it would treat me better as an undergraduate, and I'm really attached to it.

So basically, I want to know:

If I turn down the ivy for the still good but not as prestigious school, will they be offended and will I have less of a chance getting into their graduate school?

If I choose the Ivy, but later decide it isn't for me and I want to transfer to the other school, will they be more likely to reject me since I turned down their offer earlier?

Any help would be appreciated, but I'd also really appreciate it if you could explain why you think that, if you have any firsthand knowledge about it, or if you have a source from an admissions counselor or something like that.

    Thanks!

  • Is it too late to ask my teachers for another rec?

So I'm applying to college, and I think there is another college I want to apply to that was not originally on my list. I already have two teachers that wrote the rest of my recommendation letters, but is it too late to ask them to do one more? They would have to finish by January 1st, and my school's official deadline finalize college application lists was 3 weeks ago. Should I ask my counselor if I can apply for one more, or just let that one go?

  • What do you think my chances are at getting into Oxford?

I am a rising senior at an American high school who is really interested in Oxford. I think the different style of teaching sounds great and I want to study in a different country, a different format, and expand my horizons. I know standardized test scores are important, so here they are:

SAT: Critical Reading - 800; Math - 710; Writing - 690 (I know this is bad, I'm retaking in October, hopefully I score higher, my PSAT in writing was an 80 and practice tests are high 700s, I don't know what happened)

    SAT Literature - 800; SAT Bio M - 730; SAT Bio E - 780; SAT Math 2 - 690; SAT US History - 780

    AP Calculus AB & BC - 5; APUSH - 5; WHAP - 5; Biology - 4; English Language - 4

If I apply, it will be for the Politics, Philosophy, and Economics major/course. My grades are high in history and English, but not quite so high for math, though I take extremely high level (by American standards, at least) courses.

Normally, I would just apply, but for this program I have to take the TSA test, and the closest location where it is being offered is 6-8 hours (by car) from where I live, and it is on a school day. I'll probably end up missing 1-3 days of school, and have to pay for lodging and possibly airfare. Then, if I get an interview, I'll have to fly to New York or England, and I live on the West Coast. So I want to make sure I have something of a chance before I enter this complicated and expensive process. What do you think?

  • Should I include test scores on my résumé?

Hi, I am in high school and applying for certain stuff that asks for a résumé. I have scored high on SATs and APs, and was wondering if I should put that on a résumé. A lot of websites say you shouldn't, but most of them give the fact that it is high school stuff as a reason, which doesn't fit me because I am in high school. Some of the stuff I am applying for are tutoring jobs, some are internships, some are research stuff.

  • What TV channel/network do you watch the most?

I probably watch PBS the most, but I feel like I am probably one of a few. So I wondered what most people watch the most or think has the best programs.

  • How does a brain start functioning?

I know about all the neuron firing and all that signal stuff that are part of the functioning brain. I have also heard that the brain does not really function until about 40 days after conception. So I was wondering what makes the brain start working?

  • Do you think I could be a tutor?

So I was thinking about starting a tutoring service with my friend. We both do really well in school, have good SAT scores, and such things, but we are both in high school. Could we just start posting flyers and asking our neighbors? Do we need a work permit? A tutoring permit? Do we have to be adults to tutor kids, or just have adults wherever we are doing the tutoring?

Also if we could do it, how much should we charge? The minimum wage where I live is $10 an hour. Could we just make it $10 an hour per child?

  • Do you do your own research project during SIMR or help with research at the institute?

A lot of the research summer thing I've looked at expect you to come up with your own project, which you will have mentors to help you with. Is SIMR the same way, or do you just help out in the lab?

  • Have you taken a Coursera course?

Was it good? Do you think you learned a lot? If you took it during the school year was it really difficult to manage the work? Do you think a high schooler can do it? I've taken AP Calc AB and APUSH and gotten 5s, and this year I'm taking WHAP, AP Bio, Calc BC, and AP Language Arts.

  • What should I write for the school newspaper?

I need to write an article for the opinions section. There can't be anything too vitriolic (though I suppose that's more how I write it) and nothing about the election since it will be over by the time this issue gets published. If you could give me a list of ideas it would be great, but one good one is fine too, I have plenty of opinions, I'm just drawing a blank at the moment.

  • What should I write for an article for my school newspaper?

I'm in the opinions section. There can't be anything too vitriolic, especially about Republicans (administration caused problems with last anti-Republican piece, though it did get published since the editors wrote an anti-Obama piece last minute). Nothing about the election since it will be over by the time this issue gets published. If you could give me a list of ideas it would be great, but one good one is fine too, I have plenty of opinions, I'm just drawing a blank at the moment.

  • How do practice test scores usually translate onto the real SAT?

I realize that is pretty terribly worded. Basically, if I've been taking Excel Test Preps practice tests and getting 2150s on average, would I be likely to receive about the same score on the actual thing? If you've take both, have you noticed a difference?

  • What do you think I would get on this SAT essay?

    Prompt:

There is, of course, no legitimate brand of science that enables us to predict the future accurately. Yet the degree of change in the world is so overwhelming and so promising that the future, I believe, is far brighter than anyone has contemplated since the end of the Second World War.

Assignment: Is the world changing for the better?

    Essay:

The world is always changing, and the overall direction of these changes seem to be for the better. In life and history, the evidence to support this is pervasive.

In history, the Civil Rights Movement during the 1950's and 60's shows how racial views have changed for the better. Discrimination and segregation were once pervasive in America, but leaders of the Civil Rights movement, like Martin Luther King Jr., fought to change that. During the movement, President Truman desegregated the military, and the Supreme Court ordered that the schools be desegregated as well. Though desegregation in schools was slow, eventually it did occur, and today students of many different races may attend one school. The world has changed, to one where diversity is more valued. There has also been an increase in global unity.

This year, the Olympics will be held in London. People from many different countries will come together and cooperate in order to celebrate this competition. Over 200 countries and territories compete in the Olympics. It has taken many years for it to grow this large, and this show of global cooperation shows that the entire world is not only growing better, but together. There is more justice in the world as well. The UN created a list of human rights, and among these is the right to a fair trial.

In Victor Hugo's Les Miserables, which takes place in post-Revolution France, Jean Valijean is sentenced to life in prison for stealing a loaf of bread. While cruel and unfair punishments like this may still exist in the world, they are no longer condoned. By declaring that being tried fairly and treated humanely is the right of all people, the world has made a step in the right direction.

While it may not be a perfect world, the world in which we live in is slowly changing for the better. It is a world that fights against racial injustice and other violations of human rights. It is a world that struggles toward unity. Though we may not live in a utopia and perfection may be impossible, we still strive toward it, and, for this reason, the world is always changing for the better.

So what do you think? It was 2 pages (the space allotted), though I know it looks really short here.

  • MacBook not responding, says I need to restart, but can't, how do I fix this?

My Mac froze and says " you need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button" however, when I press the power button, nothing happens. The computer refuses to restart. I also tried pressing control command while pressing the power button, and it still doesn't do anything. What do I do? I need to print out an essay for class tomorrow, so i need to be able to access it.

  • How can you share iWork docs using the iCloud?

I want to share a keynote with some classmates so we can all work on it. Normally, we'd use Google docs, but our school uses iPads, and it is really slow on the iPad. Is there a similar thing I can do with my keynote on the iPad, and how does it work?

  • Do individual episodes of Doctor Who make sense on their own?

I want to start watching Doctor Who, but I don't think I could go all the way back to the beginning. There are also some individual episodes I want to watch, but I don't know if anything would make sense if I did that. Where in the series should I start watching?

Also, if anyone knows a good place to watch them, let me know!

    And no spoilers please!

  • Does Peter ever say the "secrets" line in the Spiderman movie that he says in the trailer?

The "We all have secrets. The ones we keep, and the ones that are kept from us" one. I don't remember it in the movie, but I wasn't exactly looking for it. If it was in the actual movie, what scene?
