I have always had an affinity for animals. I would guess that to be because I have grown up around vets, farriers, K9 handlers/trainers, breeders of all kinds, and have learned a lot from them. I take the initiative to educate myself about dogs, cats, horses, and other animals on my own time, and love to learn anything and everything I can about animals, their behavior, nutrition and medicine. I do not consider myself an animal expert because I am constantly striving to further my education through research and hands on experience, but dogs are my passion, and I've been in the business of training for going on seven years now with a strong emphasis on aggression issues. I am a firm believer in positive training, a strong Anti-BSL advocate, and a voice for the underdog.

  • Belgian Malinois or Dutch Shepherd?

I'm looking into getting a dog for Schutzhund and protection, but I am having a hard time deciding between the two. I love Dutch Shepherds, and their temperament, but I love the Belgian Malinois work ethic. I'm just not sure which would be a better overall breed considering I need the dog to be dual purpose for personal protection as well as for sport. Anyone with experience with either breed please fill me in on the pros and cons of each breed for this work.

  • Service Dog Issue or Store Issue?

A woman had a dog that was well mannered, didn't bother anyone, and stayed right by her side. The dog sat when told, laid down when told, and did exactly as she said. The dog had no real interest in people aside from the occasional half-hearted sniff if someone passed by close to him and his owner.

The dog occasionally tapped the woman's arm, and she would stroke his head, and he would occasionally lean against her as well.

A store employee inquired as to whether the dog was her service dog or not as it did not have a vest or any form of identification on. The woman said yes, and the employee asked what services the dog provided. She said the dog was there to help her cope with stress from being around too many people. The employee then asked "How", and she said the dog would nudge and lean into her if she was getting anxious, and would act as a buffer between her and other people so they wouldn't get too close to her.

The employee told her that the dog wasn't allowed in the store because it wasn't a "real" service animal, and the woman couldn't bring a pet dog in just because it made her feel better when she was shopping. They demanded proof the dog was a real service dog, and she told the employee that he was violating her rights under the ADA by asking, and that she didn't have to provide any proof or paperwork as service animals do not need be certified only perform the tasks necessary to assist their person. The employee got the manager, and they kicked her out, and she left with only a threat to report the store.

Is this lady in violation by no having her dog labeled or providing some form of identification or proof of certification or registry on the dog or is the store in violation of her rights under the ADA?

I train dogs for all manner of things, but rarely do I train and work with dogs for service work so I'm not up to speed on the laws regarding service animals. Part of me feels the lady should have provided something, but the other part of me is offended the were harassing her when the dog was doing nothing other than what it was trained to do, and not bothering anyone or being disruptive in any way.

  • Sedative for cat while driving 15 hrs?

My husband and I may be moving out of state, and the drive is about 15 hrs. Now, my cat is very good in the car, but she is very noisy and gets somewhat stressed since she's an inside cat who only leaves the house to go to the vet for vaccinations and routine care.

We don't want to rehome her because traveling with her may be too much for her so I was contemplating getting a sedative from the vet.

My question is for those who have traveled long distances with their pets, and used sedatives.

    1. How long do the sedatives last

    2. Do they knock the animal out completely or do they just offer stress relief

    3. What did you do with a cat as far as "bathroom breaks" are concerned...are they needed

Any information would be great as we don't want to get rid of her. I've already had to find a wonderful new home for my pit bull since we can't rent with a pit (fenced in yard, 2 kids who adore him, and plenty of time to play with him).

My remaining 2 dogs ride exceptionally well in the car so sedating them wouldn't be necessary...I just worry about my cat.

  • Pit Bull Haters Still Gonna Hate?

This story has been plastered all over the news and internet. This rescue pit bull, Lilly, saved her owner who passed out on the train tracks, from being struck by a train. Lilly took the hit herself while pulling her owner off the tracks to safety. I ask, how can you, after watching something like this, still feel the breed is inherently evil? There are thousands of stories like this that get lost in the hate all Pit Bulls hype, but I want to know how anyone could hate this wonderful breed after witnessing an act of such love and devotion.

The first link is a video of Lilly, and the second is the press story

  • I've ridden, worked with, and am quite comfortable handling horses, but?

I worked at a ranch as a young teen where I cared for Thoroughbred horses, and had full access to a quarter horse that I could ride after my chores were completed. I can ride both English and Western, and have dabbled in barrel racing (nothing serious). I know my way around horses to a point, but still consider myself quite the novice when it comes to many things.

I've always had my heart set on a Friesian because of their temperament, beauty, etc. I prefer male horses over females, but I really don't want a stallion.

Would this be a good horse for a first time owner? How hard would it be to obtain one fully trained, and what would the cost be to keep one since they're a bit on the large size?

Any recommendations on breeds would be appreciated, and anyone with experience as a Friesian owner please feel free to inform me of anything I would need to know.

My husband and I are getting our house ready to sell, and intend on purchasing a farm with a brand new, two stall barn. Despite being around horses most of my life...I'm no expert by any stretch, but would rather be a responsible owner than to go in half ******...lol. I'm a dog expert, and would prefer to go about acquiring a horse in the same way I would tell someone to do with a dog breed.

    Thanks in advance.

  • What could this dream mean? It is unusual for me to dream stuff like this.?

I don't normally have dreams like this. Normally my dreams are stupid, and I can tie them into something that happened during the day, a movie I watched, etc. I've only had two, now three dreams like this that I know have to have a meaning. I just can't quite figure out what this one is supposed to mean. All the dream interpretation stuff goes completely off wolf or dog. Well in my dream there are wolf hybrids and mix breed dogs. None of those sites seemed to help so I figured I ask ya'll what you thought my dream meant.

    DREAM:

I was walking along with my husband down the road to my grandfather's house in town, but the road was different. It was a gravel road with tall trees on either side though everything else was the same. My husband wasn't really a focal point, but merely someone there with me. We were talking about something when I saw a creature darting in and out of some bushes. I went to investigate, and found it to be a wolf hybrid. I was intimidated by it, but greeted it in an appropriate manner by crouching down, and inviting it to me. It licked by face, and then I found another coming to do the same. Soon they were walking with my husband and I, and more and more of them kept appearing until there were around 20 or so of them.

We made it to my grandfather's house, and as I was telling my family about the wolf hybrids I looked out the window to see them all curled up in the front yard as if they were waiting for me or bedding down for the night. The two of us left the house, and sure enough they all rose up, and began running around me as we walked. They were relaxed and just enjoying walking with us. I was slightly anxious about where they all had come from, but at this point in my dream I was completely relaxed and enjoying our walk together. That's when I woke up.

  • Any recommendations? I'm running out of options for this poor guy!?

Alright. I have an itchy dog. He has been square for over 2 years with his allergies, and we thought he was alright...WRONG!! This summer has made him it's *****, and I can't seem to get him straight. The poor dog has been prescribed Hydroxazine, Benedryl, and some other medication that haven't even made a dent in his itching. He's been on steroids, and some other really expensive medication that he didn't respond to.

He is on a high quality special diet that I KNOW is not the problem so please don't mention diet. I know what I'm doing in that area, and it isn't his food causing the itching.

He gets wiped down each time he comes in from being outside. He gets nice cold baths (no soap, just laying in a tub full of nice soothing cold water.) when he is exceptionally itchy, and bathed once a month. He is flea/tick free so we know he doesn't have an allergy there, and the vet has ruled out any fungus, mange, or other skin condition...it is ALLERGIES!!!

I'm wondering if anyone else has any idea of something that can be done for him now. I don't have the money to pay a dog dermatologist to test and mix serum for him yet, but I'm saving up so we can have that test done before next summer hits.

I just need to know if anyone has any ideas on what to do in order to help him through this season. The poor boy has bloodied himself, and I've already talked to the vet about things.

These pictures were taken AFTER the vet cleaned him up...he looked like he got thrown from a moving vehicle before they cleaned him up.

    This is him before summer...

    This is him now...

    https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=2673916199...

Just so you all know... he looked amazing at the beginning of summer, but after a month...this is what happens...poor guy. He doesn't even look like the same dog!

  • Would this be more of a hassle than a blessing?

A relative who I formerly worked with at the sheriff's department knows a gentleman who trains police dogs, and search and rescue dogs. The guy's kennel is full, and he's looking to place a female GSD who is OB and S&R trained. My uncle has already acquired a protection trained GSD that is bang on with her training, and if she is any indication as to this man's abilities as a trainer then I give him thumbs up. He's not a joke trainer.

I have the ability to get this dog, but honestly don't know what I'd do with a S&R dog. Protection work, yes, I understand and would love to own one trained in PP, but S&R? I'm not so sure.

My husband is up in the air about the dog, and I'm feeling the same way based on what it is trained for. Should I wait to see if another dog frees up, or jump on the chance?

I've got three males, and this dog is a female so bringing her in wouldn't be much of an issue with my pack.

  • I just had to post this...How cute is he?

I just felt like sharing this. Dio has had a rough life. He was abandoned at the shelter with his mother and siblings. Everyone was adopted but him because he was perceived to have aggression and other behavior problems. He had severe allergies that caused all his hair to fall out, and was super shy. He later developed horrid seizures, and was thought unadoptable. He was set to be euthed. when I decided to adopt him. It has taken over a year to get him straightened out. He's 3 now, and such a happy boy.

Despite his issues, and shy nature he is super sweet. I just wanted everyone's opinion. Is he handsome or what?

  • Okay...have you ever...lol?

Okay, here's my question. Is this not the most non-threatening/ pitiful, Pit you've ever seen?!?! The pizza delivery guy just about lost it when Dexter answered the door a few minutes ago.

    https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=2354550098...

Poor Dexter has a horrid UTI that we're treating, but until his incontinence stops he has to wear a belly band. We have been calling him MC Pee Pants, and the poor guy is so over it...lol. Even the vet and staff were calling him Mr. Pee body while I left him there for X-rays today...hahaha! Just thought I'd ask if everyone else was as amused by this as I am.

  • Outside training recommendations?

Alright, I just received a call from a past client. She has a kennel run for both her dogs, but one has started to guard the housing unit of the kennel, and the other dog won't stop barking and whining because he can't get inside, and her neighbor is complaining.

Another issue is that the kennel is about 100 yards from their house on the back side of their property so getting to the dogs in enough time to correct the behavior when it is happening is impossible for her, and I do NOT make 3 am. house visits to clients. She put an ultrasonic bark deterrent in the kennel run portion, and that has worked to cease the dog's barking, HOWEVER, the dog with the guarding issues needs to be corrected, and the issue resolved. We've already removed one source of contention between the two from the kennel, but the fact still remains that there are 2 dogs in 1 kennel that is too small for the both of them.

I suggested the dogs be crated within the housing unit of the kennel so as to avoid the guarding issue, and that worked for a few weeks before the client explained that she had relented, and let the dog out because she could hear the dog whining and barking over the baby monitor she'd set up in the housing unit.

We've tried crating one, and leaving the other free, but that is still an issue. Because the one dog has issues being separated.

I recommended crating the dogs inside the house, but she is completely against that idea due to the inconvenience of having to fold away the crates every morning.

My most recent recommendation was to give the dog's a freedom trial run. The dogs have a dog door that leads into the house's attached garage, and I recommended leaving the kennel door open at night so the dogs could go in there, or into the garage. Our only concern with this is that the dogs may bark out near where the neighbor lives and cause her to complain again. (dogs are contained by an invisible fence.)

The fact the dogs are soo far removed from the house, and the client is borderline unwilling to adhere to my suggestions in regard to this issue is a bit of a challenge here, and I'm starting to run out of ideas that don't include bark collars (I hate them, but the husband is thinking about using them)

I'm beginning to think that it would be best to use an e-collar on the dog guarding the kennel when he's guarding it because the e-collar would offer the correction from a distance, but at the right time. Now, I would only instruct my client to use the pager setting, and the shock button would be taped off so there wouldn't be any mistakes there, but I don't really like this idea, and it's a last resort sor of thing.

If any of you have any recommendations as to how to handle this I'd be grateful. I'm trying to offer them a cost effective solution, but I'm thinking their best bet would be to put in a second dog door on the housing unit of the kennel, and divide the kennel run with a fence so the dogs have their own housing unit and kennel run.

It is extremely irritating to try and help someone whose dogs are so decidedly removed from the family, and all the dog's want is to be near said family. The dogs do well in the house, but the owners insist on having them outside at night. This is something I have told them repeatedly I'm not a fan of, but hey, that's how they want it.

If it matters at all, the dogs are both 9 mo. old adolescent, altered males. One is a Catahoula mix (the one with guarding issues), and the other is a hound/lab mix.

They've done well with all the other training, but this one issue has just recently reared it's ugly head, and I'm at a loss.

  • Dog with UTI, suggestions on course of action!?

Dexter is prone to UTIs. I know this. However, he's had a few, and the antibiotics that he's been prescribed have been ineffective due to his building up some whacked sort of immunity to them. They have given him cranberry tablets in conjunction to the antibiotics, but it took over 3 weeks and two RX to clear up his last one.

He has one right now, how do I know? Because his symptoms are exactly the same each time. He walks around peeing without realizing it, his temp is slightly elevated, and he strains to pee.

My issue is that each time the vet runs their "tests" on him to tell me what I already know, they can never answer my question of WHAT is causing the UTI. I mean, if his levels are off wouldn't it be fairly easy to figure out if he's getting too much protein, not enough protein, needs something, etc.?

It seems to me that they are just tossing medications at my dog instead of treating the underlying problem, or letting me know what it is so I can alter things in either his diet or environment to reduce the possibility of them reoccurring.

The thing about his UTIs are, two times I know what caused them because they were brought on by a change in his environment. 1. I was using dental cleansing additives to the dogs water...stopped, he didn't have another one for a long time. 2. was when he didn't get cleaned well enough after playing in the mud, and some stuff got in his urethra causing the infection. The rest of the times he's had UTIs they have been absolutely random, and had no known cause.

This time, I have NO idea what is causing it. He's eating high quality foods, I make sure to clean him down there when it rains and is muddy out, and there's nothing odd in his environment.

Should I find a different vet or what? I like one of the three vets in my clinic, but sometimes I get the one I'm not too fond of, and I KNOW she tries to rape me for money despite me being a regular at their clinic. I'm also curious to know what other people's vets have prescribed or suggested for UTIs because for some reason, after years of being with this vet clinic, I'm starting to see changes that I don't like. They're trying to open a new facility, and they've raised their prices, and now require certain services to get services when I know for a fact they weren't required before.

I'll do whatever is necessary for my dogs, even if I really don't have the money for it, but it seems like my vet knows this, and is taking advantage. Sooo, I'm wondering if I should switch this time when I take him to a vet.

There is a vet that I absolutely adore as a person who has just opened a new vet clinic. I wonder if I should take him there this time...as a comparison? What do you all think?

  • Should I...or Shouldn't I?!?!?! Seriously Not A Happy Camper!?

Alright, this IS a dog related question, but it is also another type of question so please hear me out.

I have a friend who was a former client. Note to anyone interested...never take on friends as clients because it never works. Anyway, said friend has used me for pet sitting which, up until recently I've had no qualms about doing for free given she's a friend. HOWEVER, she has recently moved into a horrible apartment area where the cops were called on ME just for being there by nosy neighbors. Needless to say I'm a little less than thrilled about this arrangement. She works odd hours, and frankly we've had the discussion that she has no time for her dog, and that even with my taking care of him, he's not getting the care and attention he needs, etc. She won't listen.

NOW, I just received a phone call from a local Greyhound Rescue that I'm familiar with stating that said friend has put my name down as a reference for her to adopt a Greyhound. I CANNOT give her a good reference for many reasons. 1. Her current living situation is NOT suitable for the dog she has, let alone another dog. 2. Her financial situation leaves her barely able to take care of the dog she has, let alone another dog. 3. She will expect me to work with the dog on behavior issues because this one does, 4. Her dog has escaped a few times, and I've had to come with my trained dog to track him down. 5. She is going to expect me to care for the second dog as well as her first FOR FREE since she doesn't have time for the dogs. I COULD GO ON, but I digress.

Here is my problem. Should I talk to her first to explain WHY I cannot give her a good reference, and tell her to find another reference, and to reiterate that I will NOT pet sit for her if she gets another dog...or should I just go ahead and give my honest reference to the rescue group, and if she asks just tell her I told them the truth? I don't want to hurt her feelings, but I'm shocked that she's let everything I've told her go in one ear and out the other when it comes to her dog, her living situation, and my sentiments on all of it. As a professional I feel I should give the reference to prevent her from adopting the dog because I feel it would NOT get the care a rescue dog needs, but the friend in me wants to try and talk to her first...then there's the evil third wheel in my head that says..."you know she's not going to even listen to you."

What would you do in this situation. A little history on her is that she's a very depressed and needy person, she's bad with money, makes poor life decisions, she asks for help then shoots down all answers or possible solutions to problems, and just wants everyone to pay attention to her, pitty her, and do things for her without being willing to do anything in return. Shitty friend I know, but I'm afraid she may off herself and don't want that on my conscious...enough is enough...I need a third party opinion on this one because I can't seem to get straight answers from the two other people in my life who know this friend and the current situation.

  • Anyone else feel the tug to just...not care, but can't quite be that heartless?

I've already taken 3 dogs in less than 2 months from the street that had no form of identification. 2 were aggressive, one being the dog I have crated in my garage that I saved from being killed while running down a major highway.

The dog warden, local shelters, and vets knows me personally, and I don't even need to give my address anymore, nor do I need to call when I take a dog into the vet for a microchip scan.

I don't have room at my place to actually house these dogs, and most of them drive me nuts because I find them over the weekend, and the dog warden can't come get them till Monday.

I keep finding these dogs, most of them are definitely someone's pet because they know basic commands and are neutered/spayed. I always post them all over facebook, call the local shelters, and the dog warden to make sure they have every chance to get back to their owners, but many times I find that no owners come after them.

Sometimes when I see one, I just want to drive by or pretend I don't see the dog, but I just can't bring myself to do it because I always think "What if one of my boys got loose, and I couldn't find them?" I would want someone to do everything possible to get them back to me (mine are always wearing tags and their collar), but on the off chance they lost it.

Am I the only person feeling this way? I train, I pet sit, I have my own dogs, and I LOVE dogs. However, I'm getting tired of not having a place for these guys. I almost feel like starting my own non-profit shelter just to help out and have a place for them.

Sorry, I just want to know if my feeling this way is bad or if I'm not the only one. I know it technically isn't my job or responsibility, but I can't seem to NOT help them, and its driving me nuts!

  • What is going on with my boss? Why is she suddenly after me?

Ok, I knew my boss well before she hired me. I actually never even applied. I mentioned that I needed a job, and she hired me after an informal interview of "are you dependable?", and "can you do the work?". I've been working for her a little over 7 mo. now, and up until a couple months ago things were great! I loved my job, I really loved everyone I worked with, and I couldn't wait to get to work.

Recently, a couple mo. ago a new girl was hired, and she's a gossiping busy body. She doesn't want to work, she takes personal calls, she cops an attitude when asked to do something, and she questions EVERYTHING! She has been here for around 3 or 4 mo. and there are still things she doesn't know how to do. I asked her if there was any way I could help her, and if there was anything she was shaky on and her response was "Girl, I know how to do everything." The list of problems goes on, and at one point I had to tell her to "lose the attitude" because she was ranting in front of customers.

There was an issue at work where I had to call the boss in to help fix, and I was blamed for everything. Recently she's been saying "you should know how to do this" all the time about things that I WAS NEVER SHOWN HOW TO DO!!! An employee who has been with the co. longer than me said she didn't even know how to do most of those things.

The new employee is NOT being held accountable for what she knows. One of the issues that the boss had to be called in to fix was something this employee should have known how to do, but I was fixing one that I wasn't even sure about. I got blamed for both instead of the boss calling the other employee on her lack of knowledge.

My boss is singling me out, picking on me, and recently has been talking down to me. I don't want to go to work, I feel like she hates me, and she's talked very mean to me.

Before all this she was really nice, we got along great, and there was no problem. She asked me what was going on between me and the new employee a few days ago, and I told her all the employee was doing, and all she got from it was that I had a problem with the new employee's attitude. She totally disregarded everything else I said.

Now, things seem worse than ever. The thing is, I'm part time, and I make minimum wage. The truth is, I only worked for her because I liked her, and the job was fun. Now, I'm starting to feel like only giving her minimum wage work... she'd be lucky if I showed up on time. I'd never give anything less than my best, but at this point I'm really frustrated with the situation.

She's def. playing favorites, but out of the three other employees I am the one that she is attacking. WHY!?!?!

I really could use some advice.

Here are a few other details

    1. The new girl is a vendor in the store as well... though... so am I

    2. I am starting my own business, but have never once said or indicated I ever planned on quitting... cause I haven't. I really liked my job, and would like things to go back to the way they were. I train dogs, and make pet products. It wouldn't even remotely compete with her so I don't see the issue there

    3. I'm always on time, I'm always positive and great with the customers, and I never call off. I've been sent home because I came in to work sick, but I've never called off.

    4. I've always come in when the boss called. Normally it was cause she screwed up the schedule and forgot to schedule someone, but there were a few times someone called in.

  • Who has used the Kinderpuppy Courses? (Trainers only)?

A fellow trainer who has is planning on doing puppy classes once she's done with school asked me if I knew of any pre-made puppy class curriculums that she could purchase so she wouldn't have to script everything herself.

I tolDog-tecthat the only ones I was aware of were from Dogtec, and cost around 500 dollars, and that I didn't know anything about them other than that.

She did some scrounging around on-line and said she found the kinderpuppy course on Dogwise for half that. I read the description and it sounds fairly good, but I've never used anything like that. I've always just done things for myself. However, I was wondering if anyone (trainer wise) has used or know of anyone who has used the kinderpuppy courses, and what you thought of them. If they were helpful, if you would recommend them to a novice dog trainer, etc. I personally wouldn't want to purchase something I haven't seen in action, but she's just afraid of messing things up. (not that she could...lol)

She's pretty determined to get it seeing as how she thinks it will help her, but I offered to teach her to do things herself. She declined cause she didn't want to impose and pull me away from my work, but I guess you can't help someone whose dead set on doing something. I just want to be able to offer her some feedback before she dives head first and pays a couple hundred dollars for this thing.

So, if any of you know anything about this kinderpuppy course... please let me know.

  • Do you like my dog's impersonation?

Dio and Dexter were playing in the front living room when Dio accidentally pulled Dexter's bandanna over his head. My husband and I were watching tv, and Dex came over to ask me to fix the silly thing, but all I could do was laugh because he reminded me of Antoine Dodson.

Here is the video for those of you who have never seen it, you have to watch it before looking at Dexter's pictures or it won't make sense.

I just figured the Dog section could use a good laugh.

  • What Mix do you think? This is a very good pic of my Dio boy!?

HE is a mix, so we think. We know what his mother is for sure, and were told what the father could be. I just want to see your opinions now that I have a good picture of him. He weighs in at 73 lbs. and is roughly 63" tall. He's two years old, and is pretty much done growing.

Here's two different pictures... please ignore me... I look horrible cause I just got done working with some dogs.
