  • Can a hospital charge a patient after the hospital fails to submit the bill to Medicaid?

I have a situation in which a hospital is seeking payment for a $65,000 bill which should have been submitted to Medicaid. Now the hospital says its too late to submit it to Medicaid, since its been more than a year. They want the whole $65k, even though Medicaid would have only paid them a fraction of that amount. Can they do this? The bill is being sent to collections.

  • Any advice as to how to cheaply set up two wireless headphones for a home theater setup?

I have a newborn son (10 weeks) and I live in a one bedroom apartment. As my son transitions to his crib, which is in the same room as the home theater system, I want to set up a system whereby my wife and I can put on headphones (two sets total) and hear the TV. This way, the noise will not disturb my son. Don't worry about the lighting situation. I have that covered with some room divider screens.

I had an old device from Woot or something that was basically a bluetooth headset and headphone jack (two different pieces). I can plug the headphone jack into my receiver, sync it with the headphones and successfully watch TV that way...but I only have one set and I am unsure how to find or set up another. I am looking to do this cheap (definitely under $100, but hopefully under $50), and I haven't been able to find another similar product (bluetooth headphone jack/headphones). If I found another one, I'd probably want to buy two to replace my old one, and use a headphone jack splitter, but there may be an easier way.

Any suggestions as to how I can set this up? I don't know much about bluetooth, but are there any systems that can hook up two sets of bluetooth headphones to one bluetooth device broadcasting from the headphones jack (or an alternative jack) on my receiver?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Is it possible to transfer stocks in a TDAmeritrade account to another company?

I'm an amateur stock trader. I have had an account with Ameritrade (not TDAmeritrade) for about 4 years, with very few stocks in it. I am thinking of opening an account with INGDirect because the rates for trades are smaller. Is there a way to take my stocks purchased via Ameritrade and move it to ING Direct? If so, how?

  • Is there a law regarding the amount a doctor can charge for copying medical records in Manitoba, Canada?

If so, do you know where I can find the amount and the law or regulation? Is it for all of Canada, or specific to Manitoba. I know that the Personal Health Information Regulation requires doctors to provide the records for a reasonable fee, but I am having trouble figuring out what a "reasonable fee" is. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • What is the origin or reason for restaurants in Spain charging for bread, even when it is not requested?

I recently got back from a trip to Spain with my wife. I was curious about one of the customs that we found a bit odd at the various restaurants. In several cities in multiple restaurants, the restaurant would bring bread to the table (often not very appealing bread) and then charge us for the bread, even though we did not order it and were not told that we would be charged. Admittedly, some menus mentioned the bread charge, but if you weren't looking for it, you could easily miss it. In one restaurant, we told them we didn't want the bread when they brought it and they gave us a funny look.

My question is, why do Spanish restaurants do this? Is it a way to bump up the check artificially? Is there some sort of local custom or expectation that everyone wants bread with every meal?

I'm mostly just curious. I didn't mind all that much, once we expected it, but it does seem to be an odd way to do business.

  • Can anyone offer sound advice about taking in a stray housecat into an apartment?

I live in a one bedroom apartment (650 sq ft) in NYC with my wife. She has been feeding a stray cat at a park near her job, and she wants to take the cat into our home as a pet. It just recently started showing up at the park about 4 weeks ago. The cat seems friendly, as though it was a house cat (as opposed to a feral cat). It let's my wife freely pet its head. We've been discussing the possibility of bringing the cat into our home, but we have some concerns. Primarily, we both work full work days, Monday through Friday. She's out of the house from 7am to 5pm and I am out from 7:30am until 6pm. As it currently stands, the cat visits the park every afternoon, where my wife feeds it. We've asked around, and we know that some neighborhood kids have played with the cat and that on at least one other occasion, someone fed the cat besides us. If we take the cat into our home on a Sunday, is it safe to leave it alone in our apartment for 8 hours alone, five days in a row? Naturally, the first step would be to take the cat to the vet, so no need to discuss that step. I'm concerned that the cat may freak out and wreck our furniture/apartment if it is cooped up alone for so long.

    Any thoughts? Suggestions? Advice?

  • Is there anything wrong about combining spearmint, jalapeno & basil plants in the same windowsill planter?

I am a real novice. My wife bought me a jalapeno plant, that I let grow while sitting indoors on a windowsill in my NYC apartment. I had so much fun watching it grow that we decided to get spearmint and basil. I put them all in a long planter on the windowsill, but now I wonder if I should've investigated whether these plants are compatible. Remember, I'm a real novice.

  • For an outlet to make a spark when an item is unplugged, does the item need to be on?

Specifically, let's assume that you are unplugging a vacuum, which is not on and has not been used for 20 minutes. When unplugging the vacuum from the wall outlet, can it make a spark (internally or otherwise) if the vacuum is off when it is unplugged?

  • Where should I go on mainland Spain for a beach trip?

I'm planning a trip around Spain. The original goal was Barcelona, Malaga and Madrid, in that order. The only things set in stone are that I am flying into Barcelona and flying out of Malaga. Where would you recommend I visit in the interim. My wife wants to hit some beaches, and I thought Malaga would be a good pick, but some people have suggested that there are better options. I have about 4-5 days to play with, not including my time in Barcelona or Madrid.

  • If I'm spending a day in Seville, Spain from Malaga, should I make it an overnight trip or day trip?

I am planning a trip with my wife through Spain. We start in Barcelona for a few days, take the train to Malaga for a few days, and end up in Madrid for a few days. Several people have recommended Seville, so I am trying to decide if we should go and stay overnight between Malaga and Madrid or if we can do it as a day trip in the middle of our Malaga leg. We plan on getting Eurail passes, so the cost of transportation is nil.

  • Can anyone recommend a Blu Ray player which can also be a receiver?

I currently have a 5-year-old Samsung DVD player/receiver with five-speaker surround sound. The DVD player isn't working, so I want to but a cheap replacement (under $350). I figure it'd be a good idea to get a receiver that can also play Blu Ray discs. I also want something that will allow me to adjust the levels on the various speakers individually. With the old Samsung DVD/receiver, the center channel was too low, but it was a cheap model, so there was no way to specifically increase just the center speaker's volume.

    Any recommendations?

Also, do I need to buy new speakers, or can I use my old speakers and just buy a new Blu Ray receiver?

  • How can I clear all tabs in the newest version of Microsoft Word?

When I work off of various documents or make lists, I often end up with altered tabs on the Ruler at the top of the screen. I know I can click and drag each one off of the Ruler to remove them, but is there a way for me to get rid of them all without the tab-by-tab dragging? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • What should I consider when it comes to doing a real estate deal with or without a broker?

I know someone in Queens, NY who likely wants to sell her apartment. I assume it'd benefit both of us if we could work out a deal between ourselves, without listing the apartment or hiring brokers. This will be my first time purchasing property.

What is the benefit (to both parties) if we do not use brokers? I assume its better for us financially, but assuming a $200k place in Queens, NY, any idea how much we both would save?

Also, what are the potential pitfalls of doing this without a broker? Is there a particular reason why a broker would be helpful?

  • Advice for Carmelizing Onions, Please?

I am a self-taught cook. I tried carmelizing onions recently and failed miserably. The onions didn't brown well and many came out dry and paper thin, almost like the outer skin of the onion. Here are the details of what I did:

I cut up a medium-to-large yellow onion in half, and then cut off the two ends. I then cut the onion into strips. I placed them in a teflon non-stick pan with about a tablespoon of butter, brought the heat up to medium and after a couple of minutes, reduced the burner to the lowest heat. I tried to spread out the onions in one layer at the bottom of the pan. I let them cook for 30 mins, but they didn't seem done, so I let them cook for another 15, and then another 15 after that and so on. Since I was 100% experimenting, I let them cook uncovered for well over an hour because I wasn't getting the color or flavor I was looking for.

I am trying to make soft, carmelized onions. Was I using the wrong pan, onion, cut, fat, heat, etc? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • How do I make soft, carmelized flavorful onions to top a burger?

I am a self-taught home cook. I recently had a burger with onions on top that were soft, carmelized and delicious. They were a bit on the salty side and I may've tasted balsamic. My question is, how can I cook similar onions? This may be a very basic concept, but I have no base of knowledge. Any suggestions?

  • I lost my pitching wedge. Any advice on how to replace it?

I have a hand-me-down set of golf clubs that were probably fairly low level when initially bought. The only labeling I see is Techni-Forge and Golf Pride on the handle. Whatever the case, I cannot find a replacement online. I was considering buying another Pitching Wedge, but I'm having difficulty choosing/finding one. I'm an amateur and don't want to spend more than 60 or 70$. Any advice for an amateur looking to replace a pitching wedge?

  • Does Progesterone help regulate the menstrual cycle or is it considered a fertility drug or both?

This situation involves a woman with amenhorrea (no menstrual cycle). It is my understanding that some drugs, like Provera, are merely to help the menstrual cycle, while other drugs, like Clomid, are actually intended to help fertility (i.e., help the patient get pregnant)? Where does Progesterone fall? Is it merely something that can help the menstrual cycle or is it intended to help patients get pregnant?
