4 AnswersElections9 years agoDo you agree with the concern of which Thomas Jefferson wrote?
Jefferson's statement reads as follows: "I hope we shall crush ... in its birth the aristocracy of our moneyed corporations, which dare already to challenge our government to a trial of strength and bid defiance to the laws of our country" (http://search.lib.virginia.edu/catalog?search_fiel...

If so, what do you find in common between the two contrasting perspectives? If not, why are they incompatible? How are they relevant to the formulation of public policy in governance?

4 AnswersPhilosophy1 decade agoWill Obama's releasing a longer version of his birth certificate satisfy Donald Trump, et al.?
From Politico:
"The White House set the process into motion last week — a decision that aides said the president made himself. Saying the “fake issue” had become a distraction, White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer said the president hopes to defeat the controversy by addressing it directly.
On Thursday, White House counsel Bob Bauer asked Obama’s personal lawyer, Judith Corley of Perkins Coie, to contact the Hawaii Health Department. After returning Friday from a two-day trip through California and Nevada, Obama signed a letter to the department requesting a waiver of department policy to release his long-form certificate. Since the mid-1980s, the state has provided only short-form certificates, Bauer said.
Loretta Fuddy, the state health director, responded to Obama in a letter Monday saying she will grant an exception given “your status as president of the United States.”
“We hope that issuing you these copies of your original certificate of live birth will end the numerous inquiries received by the Hawaii Department of Health to produce this document,” Fuddy wrote. “Such inquiries have been disruptive to staff operations and have strained state resources.”
6 AnswersGovernment1 decade agoWhy do people confuse "conservative" with "corporatist?"?
I know that the latter own or control the media & the government, that corporatist propaganda leaves many people angry and seeking scapegoats, etc., but most of those who angrily rail against defenders of labor, the poor, & the middle classes LOSE from GOP policies that defeat competition through ongoing corporate mergers, that favor tax cuts tilted toward the wealthiest of us, that heavily subsidize huge corporate entities (oil, banks, agribusinesses), that outsource our manufacturing base and the jobs its supports, that allow deregulation resulting in speculation with other people's pensions and require taxpayer bailouts of S&Ls, banks, investment firms, etc.
Your opinion? I ask only for civility and substantiation of any claims you make.
3 AnswersOther - Politics & Government1 decade agoDo the wealthiest Americans earn their wealth through honest hard work?
Does their honest hard work, determination, and persistence explain why they are wealthy but dozens of Americans are not? See http://www.uic.edu/classes/actg/actg594/Readings/I... from which I excerpt "CEOs Once Got Top Dollar Only for Top Results. Now Many Are Getting Top Dollar No Matter What. Gilbert F. Amelio cried all the way to the bank. During his 17-month tenure as head of Apple Computer Inc., the company racked up losses totaling nearly $2 billion. But when the board ousted him last summer, Mr. Amelio walked away with severance pay of $6.7 million, in addition to his $2 million in salary and bonus for the year ended Sept. 30. And Dr. Amelio vows to seek a still juicier deal in his next CEO job. Despite the severance windfall, he says the Apple package 'didn't protect my downside as well as I had hoped it would.' "
Apologists for these richly paid administrators who drive their companies to ruin argue that 7- and 8-figure pay along with perks and generous severance packages are essential to keeping and hiring only the best executives. Do you agree?

1 AnswerPsychology1 decade agoDoes welfare tend to waste taxpayer money by leading to extravagant spending by welfare recipients?
By "welfare" I mean Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), welfare-to-work assistance, and food stamps. In fiscal year 2006, Section 8 rental housing added $20 billion (http://www.gao.gov/htext/d072sp.html). By "extravagant spending" I mean use of welfare assistance to purchase designer jeans, expensive automobiles, illegal drugs, etc.
Serious answers only, please (no personal attacks, anecdotal evidence, labels, platitudes, or special-interest propaganda)! Whatever your position or opinion, please cite a credible source (Moveon.org, single-issue advocate groups, and Fox News, for example, are not credible sources--try URLs ending in ".edu"). I seek informed debate, not a "correct" answer. For my part. I promise to act responsibly: among other things, I will not let the resolution go to voting.
1 AnswerEconomics1 decade agoIn the 90s, why did GM refuse to diversify by adding an 300-mile electric-powered car to its line?
Rather than pioneer a promising market, GM, upon purchasing the Ovshinski battery, sold it to Chevron-Texaco:
". . . the electric car, which in its original form designed by GM's Delco . . . gave the EV1 a range of 60 miles. Then Stanford Ovshinsky, a battery engineer . . . jumped the EV1's performance to a driving range of 300 miles. GM . . . bought Ovshinsky's work . . . then sold it to Chevron-Texaco . . ." http://danceofthesungallery.com/photo2.html

8 AnswersPhilosophy1 decade agoArtists and true art lovers only: are art and beauty inseparable?
What follows is an excerpt from a previous answer, one I can respect:
"Art is an expression of feeling, an outpouring of the soul, if you will. As feelings are not always beautiful nor even socially acceptable, so it is with art as well. My guess is that for much of humankind beautiful feelings number less than 50% of all feelings. Would you want to quell all of the larger portion of human feeling just because it is not beautiful?"
In my heart I respect but cannot accept this answer. Many of the feelings in West Side Story were hateful, vengeful, and destructive. Yet the film is both beautiful and a great work of art.
Do you agree with the previous answer or with me? I am less interested in your yes or no than in your explanation of your answer. I sincerely wish to continue to study this issue of art and beauty.

You gender matters. Her marital status (and her husband's/partner's consent) must be considered. In short, why would she ask for it and what might be the consequences of compliance?
