  • Coat Colors and Registerability?

So another person's question led to an answer which brought up this discussion for me... that answer said Dunalino is not a color because it's not able to be registered. While the registerability issue is true, I did some research and found that yes, indeed, Dunalino is considered a color in the genetics world.

    http://www.animalgenetics.us/CCalculator1.asp

I have a friend that has a Dunalino - she had to register as a Dun in AQHA and the ABRA, so technically, the color marked isn't correct for either association, no matter what she chooses.

So, my question is - what other strange or rare colors would you like the registries to include? Should the registries include those colors? Why or why not?

Please keep this discussion civil - it's a simple genetics vs. registry debate ;) Thanks everyone! I'm interested to see what other breeds have these issues...

  • Dogs won't eat healthy food?

Ok, here's the issue - I have tried multiple times switching my boxer x mastiff, lab and yorkie over to healthier dry foods (i.e. Diamond Naturals and Blue Buffalo specifically). My yorkie absolutely loved Blue Buffalo, but won't touch the Diamond (literally won't eat for days). My lab and boxer won't touch either brand - they HATE them, and they will go on a hunger strike. Even after the hunger strike, they barely eat any of the food and start to lose weight very fast. I am careful to switch over the food over the course of a week or two, with no success. They pick out and eat only the old food, and won't eat the good stuff.

My question is - has anyone else run into this, and if so, how did you overcome it? I don't feed treats during the day, and they don't get "special food" if they won't eat. Any ideas?

  • Best Type of Easy Boot?

Since we're still in the midst of winter here, it's very muddy and snowy everywhere. I don't want to get the horses shod for at least another month (we live in a very rocky area, don't like barefoot), but I want to hit the trails early this year now that my oldest horse is broke enough to take out alone. I haven't used easy boots in ages, so I'm still in the "stone age" easy boots! I'd love to get another set so I can actually ride early this year - anyone have any experience with the different types? I've looked around but there are so many different ones now, it's hard to choose!

    Thanks!

  • Can you use a child's forehead thermometer on a dog?

I've seen those nifty little thermometers where you swipe it across the child's forehead and it reads an accurate temperature. I was curious if it's accurate on dogs as well?

  • Watery lump on dogs back?

My boxer developed a soft watery lump in between his shoulder blades tonight. It's very soft and watery, doesn't seem to hurt at all. I have a vet appointment in the morning when they open, but any ideas in the meantime?

  • Thoughtful wishes from Vet's office?

For those of you who have had to put down any horse, I'm curious about your vet - I recently had to put down an old mare due to colitis (sp?), and my vet was extremely compassionate and gentle with her. I also just received a card extending their sympathy and thoughts for my mare Tilly. I thought it was very genuine and thoughtful, but how rare is it? Has anyone else had this experience? I'll be sending out a thank you to them later today about how grateful I am to have such a wonderful and experienced vet clinic nearby... We've never had a good vet until now!

Just thought I'd throw the question out to see if anyone else has had a similar experience with their vet. Also, any bad experiences? Thanks everyone!

  • Why Do We Even Answer Any Questions - Horse Section?

I'm a little peeved... Why should any of us who actually know what we're doing even answer questions in the horse section? The last question I answered, I got shot down and the person who posted the question chose some lady who didn't know what she was talking about as the best answer, just because she sided with her. So, I'm here to ask (legit question) - why do you post questions on here if you don't want to hear what people have to offer?

This will be my last post ever - sorry I'm leaving, but I'm tired of dealing with the whiney, complaining, hard to read and bad grammar, people. There are some great people on here, and I wish you few the best of luck!

  • What Type of Seed Should I Use for my Horse Pasture in Dry, Sandy Soil?

I have about 4 acres of pasture (cross fenced, one side is 3 acres, the other side is one acre, then a small pen in the middle for holding). Our soil is extremely sandy, but hay seems to grow very well in the pasture next door. Our climate varies - in the winter, we average about 2 feet of snow and temps can drop to minus 20, and in the summer our temps average about 85-95 degrees. We don't want to irrigate. We have 3 horses that will rotate pastures once it has established itself.

What type of seed do you suggest and when should we lay it down? Thanks so much in advance!

  • How do you find marginal utility?

I understand how to find equilibrium (MU of good/Price of good), but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to find the marginal utility! For example: Guacamole is $1/jar, Salsa is $2/jar. He buys 200 jars of guacamole and 300 jars of Salsa. What is the MU of each? What is the MU at 400 jars of guacamole and 200 jars of Salsa? I'm just looking for an explanation of how to calculate this, since my textbook is no help at all!

    TIA!

  • Alaska Fishing Information?

We're going up to Anchorage in June and will be travelling around by car to hit some fishing spots. I know there are some regulations in certain areas on where you can use fly fishing gear only, or a regular fishing pole... Does anyone know anywhere I can get this information in advance? Just trying to plan what to bring and map our routes... I've looked for any sort of map or link, but can't seem to find anything other than a reference from the Department of Fish...

    Thanks in advance!

  • How to Ship Fish from Alaska to California?

We're looking at going to Alaska in June for our first time. We don't mind just going out and fishing by ourselves (we don't need a guide or charter)... However, I have no idea how we would get the fish we catch shipped from Alaska to California! Does anyone know this process or experienced it firsthand? Should we look for a processor in Anchorage? Thanks in advance!

  • Weight versus Height in the Horse World?

Ok, now I've never really looked into this because I've never really had too (always had tall stocky horses, I'm 5'6" and weigh about 130, so weight's never been an issue). Now, looking through alot of the horse section posts I see alot of people answering with "horses can carry this percentage of their weight". How does this work? Can a fat, 1200 lb 14.1 hh horse carry more weight than a skinny, 900lb 14.1hh horse? I'm just not understanding the logic - that just means more weight on their joints and legs...???

Just thought I'd ask to find out the true percentage of weight/height/ect. Thanks in advance!

  • Do I need to submit a 1099 to a Contractor?

We purchased a building this year and did a major remodel (gutted and rebuilt). Do I need to submit 1099's to the contractor and sub-contractors? I'm assuming we do for labor, but I can't find anything anywhere that says anything about capital expenses... Thanks!

  • What other sports/activities do you do besides riding?

I guess this is more like a poll question, but I was wondering if anyone participates in any other sports/activities/hobbies other than horseback riding? For example - we get lots of snow and ice in the winter, so no riding for me. I started riding snowmobiles a few years back, and I've found I really like it and it keeps me in great shape so when I start riding again in the Spring, it's much easier to prevent getting sore! I'm also involved in 4-H (4-H horse leader for 6 years). We're also looking at getting into Search and Rescue (both horses and snowmobiles).

    Just a fun question!

  • What kind of flooring to put down?

We have three dogs (2 big dogs and one little guy) and are planning on having kids soon. What kind of flooring should we put down? We want to do hardwood, but it's hard to do because we would have to move out of the house (both us and the dogs) for at least 3 days while we put the stuff on. We were looking at laminate, but our friend's laminate isn't any good (high quality laminate, they dropped a pot on it and it chipped beyond repair). Help? We really don't want linoleum (sp?), tile, ect... Thanks so much!

  • PMU Adoption in California or Nevada?

My husband and I have been looking for a Percheron for a while now, and while we've heard of the PMU adoptions, we haven't found any in California or Nevada. Does anyone know of any around here? We would much rather adopt than buy (friend of mine adopted a percheron gelding from a PMU rescue who's no longer in business, he's a wonderful horse!).

    Thanks so much in advance!

  • Horse Petrified of Shots...?

Ok, I've had lots of experiences with all different types of problems, but this just stumps me. My 2 1/2 year old filly (who I've had since 5 months old) is absolutely terrified of shots! She tries to kill anyone who comes near her with a shot (including me, the vet, my husband, ect ect ect). Now, normally she is a very respectful and well mannered filly - backs at the slightest cue, very responsive to pressure, minds her space. Not with the shots! She turns into a devil horse. I've had other horses that have been scared of shots and I was able to get them over it (lots of alcohol pads so they got used to the smell, pinching the neck until they relax, toothpicks to simulate the shot), but nothing is working with her. We've tried everything, from working, working working to surprising, still nothing - she always knows and turns into an idiot.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated - the vet has refused to give her any more shots, and honestly I don't have the physical strength to do it myself - I've bent too many needles and had too many close calls trying to do this... Help! Thanks!

  • Frozen Pipes Somewhere...?

We woke up this morning to -17 degree weather (yes, negative 17!). Even though we have insulated under house (very warm under there), we left the water dripping, and there is a heater going full blast in the well house, our pipes are frozen somewhere. Our water pump is in a separate area in a box with insulation. Any ideas on how to unfreeze the pipes? We have all faucets in house open... Thanks!

  • Best duck for laying eggs and cold weather?

Ok - I've had chickens, but we're thinking of moving to ducks (cleaner and don't smell as much I think). Two part question: 1) What type of duck do you prefer for eggs? I LOVE duck eggs, but don't want to get stuck with something I don't like! 2) We live at 4500 feet and it gets fairly cold here (averaging 10 degrees every morning this week). Do different breeds take the cold better? (yes, we would have a heated coop for them, but I can't keep them locked up all the time).

    Thanks so much in advance!
