    Any help is appreciated...

    Cheers.

  • Gardeners: Am I correct in thinking that ashes can be used as fertilizer/soil nutrient?

I believe I recall hearing this before, and since I have a woodburning stove on my patio, I thought the ashes could be put to use when planting my garden.

Is this right? Does anyone have experience doing so?

Any info would be helpful and appreciated.

    Cheers!

  • Anyone have plans for Brew Year's Eve on Monday?

Monday April 7 is Brew Year's Eve, for those who don't know. Brew Year's Eve marks the anniversary of the amending of the Volstead Act in 1933, enacting emergency legislation for the allowance of the production and consumption of beer after 13 years of sorrowful Prohibition.

Prohibition was fully repealed on December 5 1933 with the 21st Amendment.

This Monday, I'll be hoisting a pint or two in honor of the one great deed FDR did while in office. Upon signing the bill on March 23 (before it went into effect on April 7), he proclaimed "This would be a good time for a beer."

    Cheers!

  • Homebrewers: Will my hop rhizomes grow this year?

Last season I planted 6 hop rhizomes to grow my own hops. I planted too late and 5 of the 6 plants didn't take... no vines, no nothing.

Do I have a chance of them coming up this year, or is it a lost cause? I'm planting new ones this year regardless, but I won't be able to get some of the varietals I'd like, such as Tettnang or Columbus.

    Any input is appreciated.

    Cheers!

  • Ever forget how much you dig a band until you hear a song you haven't heard in a while?

"Bro Hymn" by Pennywise just came up on the Pandora station I'm currently listening to. This is one of those often-occurring instances where I actually forget how much I love a certain band that I haven't listened to in a while...

    Examples?

  • Does it really make a difference as to which type of gasoline to use in a car?

I'm looking at a Land Rover, and this is the first vehicle I've considered buying that specifically states that you should use only 91 octane gasoline.

Does this really matter? Is it simply some kind of status thing, is there sound logic behind it?

In Michigan, 91 octane is about $3.50/gallon right now, to put it into perspective...

    Any feedback is welcome. Thanks!

  • Favorite songs per album... with a real twist?

I'm seeing quite a few "favorite songs on each album" questions lately. They're all quite fun, but I thought I'd throw a real wrench into the mix and ask the same for a somewhat lesser known band, Opeth. Sure, they've grown in popularity over the last few years, but they don't exactly release singles.

    Opeth...

    go.

    Orchid

    Morningrise

    My Arms Your Hearse

    Still Life

    Blackwater Park

    Deliverence

    Damnation

    Ghost Reveries

Watershed (if you've heard anything yet, good for you, since this new CD comes out this spring...)

    My favorites...

Orchid - "Under the Weeping Moon"

Morningrise - "The Night and Silent Water"

My Arms Your Hearse - "Demon of the Fall"

    Still Life - "The Moor"

Blackwater Park - "The Drapery Falls"

    Deliverence - "Master's Apprentices"

Damnation - "To Rid The Disease"

Ghost Reveries - "The Baying of the Hounds"

Watershed - unfortunately, I have yet to hear it...

    Cheers!

  • Homebrewers: Where can I find a Tetley's clone-brew?

I'm looking for a Tetley's clone recipe. I plan on altering it with something else, but I'd like Tetley's, apecifically, to start with.

    Any suggestions?

  • Opinions on dead rock stars?

Obviously, many musicians have fallen before their time, be it at the hands of a misguided "fan," such as John Lennon and Dimebag Darrell Abbot, while others fell victim to a wrong place - wrong time situation, like Buddy Holly. Others were a result of chemical abuse, such as Hendrix, Morrison, etc.

The fourth category are the "tortured souls" such as Kurt Cobain, Ian Curtis, and others, who decided their best option was sucking on a shotgun or hanging from a noose, rather than showing even the smallest bit of courage or integrity.

What are your opinions of these "idols" who decided to take the easy way out... you know, since all the adoring fans and tons of cash pouring in were enough to make anyone hate life...?

Bear in mind, this isn't to necessarily discount any actual musical influence these artists have had on the music that cam after them, but to idolize them seems a bit odd, no?

  • Question regarding religious views concerning alcohol...?

This is not intended to incite a war of words, or anything of that nature. I am wondering what the users of the Religion & Spirituality section think about alcohol consumption.

It's well known that alcohol is widely mentioned in the Bible, in particular... and not in a negative regard.

It's also well known that civilization itself was built upon the discovery of fermented beverages.

I'm curious how people of different faiths view alcohol, and what you think about those who preach to drinkers about the (in my opinion) "evils of alcohol."

I'm not talking about over-consumption or drunkenness; rather, the simple enjoyment of a quality alcoholic beverages.

    Thank you, and cheers!

  • Why do Teetotalers and neo-Prohibitionists respond to questions in Beer Wine & Spirits?

Why do I constantly have to sift through responses from people ignorantly preaching about the "evils of alcohol" and spreading erroneous information about Beer Wine and Spirits?

Doesn't it seem kind of odd, since this is a forum for people to discuss... Beer Wine & Spirits?!

I'm sick of seeing, "Don't drink. It's bad. It will ruin your life. There's nothing good about it. You'll become and alcoholic and die. You'll make Baby Jesus cry..."

Does anyone else see the irony in this? Why does this go on?

  • Will anyone be attending the Michigan Brewers' Guild Winter Beer Festival this Saturday?

Members get in an hour early to enjoy some rare beers before the public, so I'll be going right for the Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout!

It's in Grand Rapids... not too far from Detroit, Chicago, Indianapolis, etc.
