  • Upgrading Xbox consoles?

I currently have an Elite console with a 120GB drive. I've only been using it for a month or so, so if there's more than a few gigs on the HDD I'd be very surprised. Just got the Modern Warfare 2 console with a 250GB drive. How do I transfer all my downloads, gamerscore, game saves etc from one console to the other? Also, anyway I can "reset" the Elite so that when I give it to my friend in need it won't show my gamertag login stuff and Netflix account etc etc?

    Thanks all and happy holidays!

  • Recent laptops with serial port?

It's hardly modern technology, but I need a laptop for work with a build in RS232 serial port. HP, Dell, Toshiba, anything trustworthy would be best. Please don't waste my time by telling me to purchase an external USB device, this is not what I am asking for.

  • How can I make my PC never shut down/reboot without me doing so manually?

Every night around 3:30 AM, my computer says "time to install updates and reboot!". Usually I don't mind but it seems to "need to install updates" every single night now and I can't afford to keep having it reboot (needs to run some processes 24/7). What can I do so that my comp will never reboot without me saying it can?

    Thanks :)

  • 3 Monitors, 1 Computer, What Graphics Card?

I'm building a comp and this is my last issue. I'm currently sporting two monitors with my card now but am adding a 48" screen to the mix that I'd like to plug in as well. The PC will be liquid cooled so I'll be removing the gpu fan (no fans in case to reduce noise) and would prefer one card because they tend to run cooler than two. Is there some way I can do this with one card? I am running an AMD board so I am ONLY interested in ATI cards. I don't spend most of my time gaming but when I do I want to play in the best quality possible.

We're obviously in the 4000 series here, so what card? 4850x2, 4870x2, 4890? No price limit.

Here's my mobo/cpu info if you need more lmk and I'll add it.

mobo - (ASUS Crosshair III Formula AM3 AMD 790FX ATX):

    CPU - (AMD Phenom II X4 955 Quad@ 3.2GHz):

  • RAM: 16GBs of PC2-6400 vs 8GBs of PC3-12800?

Building a new computer. It will be liquid cooled to reduce noise (no fans) so if that's a factor here (heat emitted) let me know.

mobo - (ASUS Crosshair III Formula AM3 AMD 790FX ATX):

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8...

    CPU - (AMD Phenom II X4 955 Quad@ 3.2GHz):

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8...

    RAM Option 1 (Patriot Viper 8GB (4 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 PC3 12800)

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8...

    RAM Option 2 (Patriot Gamer Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 PC2 6400)

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8...

The mobo can hold up to 16GBs of RAM, I'd like to maximize that but only if it will be worth the price ($540 vs $196). I'm feeding 3 very large HD monitors with lots of processing and rendering tasks so I will be using this memory undoubtedly. My concern is since 4GB sticks don't come faster than DDR2 6400 @800 MHz maybe I would be better off staying with 8 GBs of DDR3 12800 @1600 MHz. Here's some math I did comparing the two:

    DDR3-1600 PC3-12800

    DDR2-800 PC2-6400

Memory clock is the same (200 MHz)

Cycle time is the same (5 ns)

Total data transfers is the same (16x & 8x = 12.8 billion per second)

Total peak transfer rate is the same (102,400 mB/s)

    I/O Bus clock for PC2-6400 is 400 MHz and 800MHz for PC3-12800

    Timing for PC2-6400 is 5-5-5-12 and 9-9-9-24 for PC3-12800

This is not a server, it is a personal workstation/htpc used everyday and running 24/7. Thanks for your help, feel free to ask questions I'll be watching this space.

Please spare me the "you don't need that much memory!" go away, n00bs.

  • Still using a lot of RAM memory in Vista?

I upgraded from 3GBs to 8GBs of RAM today but my sidebar gadget says I'm still using the same amount or more of memory when doing rudimentary things. As I right this I have two monitors connected and I'm watching a movie on one and surfing the web on the other... using 29% of my memory. 2.4GBs to idle?!

    My old RAM:

    Samsung 1GB PC2-6400)U-666-12-ZZ (M378T2863QZS-CF7 0817) (x2)

    ProMOS 512MB PC2-6400U-666-12-D0 DDR2-800MHz-CL6 (V916764K24QCFW-G6) (x2)

    New RAM:

    Crucial 2GB DDR2 - 800MHz CL4 Ballistix PC6400 (BL2CP25664AA80A) (x4)

Is there a difference between PC and PC2 in memory terms? Here's the rest of my comp specs if it helps:

    HP Pavilion Elite d5000t

    Intel Core 2 Quad @ 2.5 GHz

    Nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX 512MB DDR3

    1.5TB Seagate Barracuda @ 7200 w/ 32MB Cache

  • Can I stay with my 460W power supply instead of a 500W?

I just bought the NeoPower 500W power supply along with the GeForce 9800 GTX graphics card. I used to have a 460W power supply that came with my desktop but the GTX recommends a minimum of 450W. The supposedly "quiet" 500W actually has an annoying high pitch ringing that emits even when it's not on. I'd like to revert back to my old 460W but want to make sure I won't kill my machine if I decide to multitask demanding programs. I have two monitors hooked up if that makes a difference.

    Here's my specs:

    HP Pavilion Elite d500t

    Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 @ 2.5GHz

    Nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX

    3 GB PC6400 DDR2 RAM

    1.5 TB SATA + 500 GB SATA

Feel free to ask any questions, I'll be checking daily. Thanks for all your help :)

  • Will this DVI/VGA monitor splitter mirror the image or split my screen in two?

Looking at this cable as a temporary replacement for a better graphics card:

I don't want to have the same image on two monitors I want to have the extra background space for multitasking. I'm just wondering about this cable.

  • Editing a DVD in Sony Vegas 8 (basic)?

I'd like to edit one of my friend's movies he made, but it's burned on a playable DVD already so I don't have the source on my computer. I'm working with Sony Vegas 8 (which handles the .VOB files on DVD).

I need to know how to do these tasks:

-mute a selected portion of audio

-add in a selection portion of audio

    -remove scenes

    -save back as VOBs

Best answer to whoever provides me with video of the said tasks. I don't need to learn anything else, nor do I have time at the moment.

    Thanks!

  • Why don't we burn our garbage?

Instead of creating landfills and adding to massive trash piles that sit and multiply in size why don't we incinerate the garbage we produce?

Purely hypothetical - what would this mean?

-Obviously we wouldn't set ablaze in open air destructing our atmosphere with the pollution from the trash so why not create warehouse-size kilns (basically)?

-In order to disintegrate even the most withstanding materials, (metal, etc.) we'll need an extremely hot flame. Is this possible for a large area (such as a warehouse)?

-How long would it take to burn the average cubic foot of trash? Given that everyday garbage includes papers, plastics, metals, food composts, etc, could burning garbage compete with the amount coming in (vs time taken to incinerate)?

Feel free to raise any points and questions you may have, I'll +1 to everyone that share's their opinion on the matter.

  • Recommend me some games can my PC handle?

I do a lot of work in Photoshop and Premiere and I need a break... I haven't really ever gamed especially on my comp. I'm sure my graphics card will limit my options but let me know which ones I can handle. I am pretty sure I'm not interested in any RPGs, I think I'm more of a First-Person shooter gamer. But how do I know? I've played like Mario 64 and Halo 2 hahaha :p

    Best answer = effort.

    HP Pavilion Elite d5000t

    IntelCore 2 Quad CPU Q9300 @ 2.50 GHz

  • What is the name for pictures taken from a movie?

Graphic designers use these photos to create the advertisement posters and DVD covers. They aren't screen shots or clips from the movie but are taken usually while being filmed. There is a certain phrase for this kind of imagery, anybody know it?

If you do or don't, where is a good site to attain hi resolution pictures from movies?

  • What would be the positive and negative effects of lowering the drinking age to 18?

Currently in the United States it is illegal to drink alcohol under 21 years of age. Even at low doses, alcohol significantly impairs the judgment and coordination required to drive a car or operate machinery safely. Low to moderate doses of alcohol can also increase the incidence of a variety of aggressive acts, including domestic violence and child abuse.

Please answer the said question, in your short opinion or long supported answer. I am a very open and ethical person so enlighten me with your knowledge.

    Here's some background info:

"Alcohol is everywhere," said Steven Harris, a 14-year-old from San Bruno, California. "Young people see ads everywhere. We see drinking on TV and in the movies, and we see it at parties and at home. And it is probably harder for teens to get into an R-rated movie than to get alcohol. It's a joke."

    http://alcoholism.about.com/od/drinkers/a/blama050...

Two out of three teens, aged 13-18, said it is easy to get alcohol from their homes without parents knowing about it. One third responded that it is easy to obtain alcohol from their own parents knowingly, which increases to 40 percent when it is from a friend's parent. And one in four teens have attended a party where minors were drinking in front of parents.

Thanks everyone who participates intelligently (something like "YeahhH! dey shld toetally do that! :D x*D" is wasting everyone's time, so please refrain from doing so)
