  • Quality, thick fabric to make my children's winter wardrobe?

I've decided I want to make as much of my children's clothing as I can, because I'm sick of spending money on crap clothing that isn't very warm (even the supposed better brands are thinning their clothes) or spending astronomical amounts for the same thing I can make cheaper. However, I took a look through Jo-Ann's and their apparel fabric isn't much better (their corduroy being flimsy, among not being able to find a good thick plain cotton). I know it's our society's way of making everything cheaper but I want warmth. So, does anyone know of specific brands and/ or stores that do still sell quality, thick fabric (like our clothing of even just 10 years ago).

  • Can I place in Earthworms in my tumbling compost bin?

And expect a better result? The compost bin is a specialty tumbling one that isn't working as well as proclaimed albeit following all the rules and seeing steam escape in the middle of a snowy winter. Just wondering if adding worms would move it along faster and would those worms actually prosper from all the 'food'?

  • Bathroom light fixture help?

We want to remodel our bathroom from 80's style ugly medicine cabinet with built in light to something nicer looking. The problem I'm noticing is the medicine cabinet's light is the only light for the bathroom. I do like the portfolio light fixtures compared to the ugly multiple globe bulb light fixtures, but am afraid the portfolio light fixture won't cast light throughout the whole bathroom. Is my thinking correct?

  • Help with one specific child?

Currently my daughter is in 1st grade. Knowing my daughter's personality, I've been more laxed and taking things slowly. See, my daughter's not stupid, but she has this quirk that she knows she can't do something the first time so she doesn't bother trying, her version of perfectionism I guess. So we've gotten past that slightly by talking, me giving her many examples of practicing both in her life and those she sees around her (like the baby walking). So I thought we were at a stage of at least trying something to see how it feels for her. This year we started slowly, doing the basics of writing letters and math, and see how we plan to take it after a couple weeks, so working with her as best as possible. Well, today I had enough when she after at least attempting to write one single letter, the first time, she shuts down without reason. We got into another fight about her not trying and everything went down hill, with me threatening to send her to public school so that hopefully she might try for someone else.

I don't have anything big against public school as a whole, but definitely don't want to send her to the ones here. The education is laughable and recently quite a number of parents have begun home schooling for the child's safety from other kids. I already knew about the education, but hearing these stories makes we want to try harder with my daughter.

Has anyone dealt with a child like mine and found a solution? I really do want to try, but am at my wits end. I don't want to put her through anymore stress nor do I want to put the other children through listening to it. Thank you!

*For the record, she proved Handwriting Without Tears (K level) wrong. We were both crying!

  • Which companies sell quality shirts for children?

All the local department stores are and have been for a couple years now selling thin, crappy t-shirts. This isn't so bad in the summer, but with fall and winter coming, and my oldest not having as much selection in the thrift stores where thicker (normal to when I was growing up) cotton long sleeve shirts are available, I need to start going to better sources. For example, I know Hanna Anderrson sells great quality clothing, but at $26 a shirt, that is pretty expensive to buy a whole wardrobe. So, any other suggestions for thicker long lasting clothing, that might cost a little less maybe on sale?

  • Secular History curriculum for 1st graders?

Found the geography/ atlas program we will be using and plan to teach the economics phase without a curriculum (unless someone knows of one of those as well), but am having trouble finding a curriculum of basic early American history. I plan to expand as she sits fit, so I know the library will be utilized well, but am looking for the basics to go off of so I don't miss something! Thank you!

  • Still use Phonics even though she can read?

My 6 year old figured out how to read relatively quickly through both memorizing and very little assistance of me telling her this letter sounds like this. Now we are doing first grade and a modified version of Charlotte Mason. Although there is a curriculum and workbooks (she prefers these), we are still doing quite a bit of reading to her for her to learn the majority. We are finding she gets frustrated at the bigger words (that weren't memorized) and of course I worry about spelling. I'm sure phonics goes against CM, but since we live in a different time where she is, by law, tested at the end of the year, I'm not sure how much a difference doing phonics would make since she can read. Also, would teaching grammar really interfere with CM as long as we don't push too much on her?

  • Which is cheaper in the long run? An electric or gas lawn mower?

Also, what are the pros and cons of each? We just purchased our first home and need to mow the lawn ASAP, but have no clue where to start looking for the information to help us make a decision. Thank you!

  • Need to see Doctor, regular or dermatologist?

Appears I have a rash of sorts. After numerous hours trying to self diagnose based on symptoms and pictures found on the internet I am still at a loss. I am currently pregnant and seeing a CPM (midwife that is not allowed to diagnose or even treat anything outside of pregnancy, even then no prescribed meds are allowed by state laws). Should I contact my standard general practitioner, or see a dermatologist (don't need a reference according to my insurance)? My only worry is this is something bad and the general practitioner misdiagnoses it, but not really sure if going to a specialist is really all that necessary. Thank you!

  • Where can I buy big "charts" of learning materials?

I'm not even sure if this exists, but I figure someplace must have larger, poster style displays of the alphabet separated into vowels and consonants, a 100 chart, and clock with move able hands? Thank you!!

  • Ants all over my containers of vegetables, what to do?

Typically I wouldn't be worried, but I live in an apartment and due to the ants entering the homes, the complex started using "stuff" to destroy the ants' hills/ homes. However, we still have infestations (which I'm not worried about since it is centered in my bathroom), but the ants are covered in the poison (when you kill them the smell is all over the thing you killed them with). Now, my vegetable pots (currently just sprouting) are covered with ants as well. We are doing all organic, and am freaking with the idea the ants are carrying this poison through the soil and it will get into the plants roots, and thus carried to what we will eat. Is there anyway to stop them now, before they completely ruin my first attempt at gardening? Thank you!

  • Can a president remove a bill/law that was instituted by a previous president?

This is not a homework question!! Nor is it about the National HealthCare. My husband and I got into a debate and I brought up the Patriot Act. My husband then asked why Obama hasn't removed that law yet and I said I'd come on here and ask how easy or capable it is for a president to remove a previous president's law? I figure it can be done, but what really has to happen for it to take place?

  • When container gardening.....?

I have just bought seeds and a few suggest starting indoors before last frost, etc. But since I just bought them and our weather has been high 60's to low 70's all week and only continuing upwards, do I still have to start them separately, or can I just throw them in the pots now?

  • Credit card and the new law?

I received a letter from one of my credit cards I hardly use. It is actually a horrible company and thus isn't worth my time other than keeping that credit available. However, since they sent me a nice letter I thought I might look into their practices even more. The letter informs me they are lowering my credit line because 1.) I have not had any rotating credit on it for however long and 2.) My rotating credit on other cards is too high for their likeness (this one is funny actually because I have one credit card with rotating credit, but I always pay over the minimum and that bank hasn't complained EVER).

So my question is: wasn't there something against this practice (raising interest and/or lowering credit line on one card because of situations involving another) in the new law? Or was it a similar law and I am just confusing it? Thank you!

  • Good Artist In/ Around Norristown, Pa?

My best friend is toward the end of her radiation therapy (brain tumor), and our other best friend and I are looking to drag her to get something to fit the occasion! I know if we went into Philly, we'd have a better selection, but with her sometimes unpredictable situations, we need something closer! Thank you for any help on the matter (I live in Northern Va. so only know of the greats around here)!
