  • Excel 2007- How to have if statement return an empty cell?

I am trying to get an if statement to return a value if true, or have the cell totally blank if false. This is what I have:

    =IF(A1>8,A1,"")

However, the "" result is not a true empty cell. If you do =isblank(cell that contains if statement) the result is false, even though the cell looks blank to the human eye (no information is visible). How can I get my if statement to return a true empty cell so that the isblank function returns true?

  • Car electrical problems?

    Here's the situation:

-1 month ago I needed a jump start. Since then car has started quickly without problems

-Last Thursday everything started out normally. As I opened the driver's door the dome light came on. Dashboard lights were on. When I turned the key to start the engine, everything went black. There was no "chugging" like a car trying to start, just a click and then nothing electrical working. No dome light, no dash lights, no radio, no clock. Even my electronic door locking wasn't working.

Is this a simple dead battery? Faulty battery? Wiring? What?

  • Energy, Work, and all that?

I'm trying to calculate high high a mass of water could be lifted by a given amount of energy.

Energy is 5000 N/m (dealing with a unit width to simplify things). Mass of water is 205 kg/m. What is the equation for calculating how high the water can be lifted?

I'm thinking it has to be something like

    Work=force*displacement

    Work=5000 N * h

Solve for h, but not sure what the "work" part of the equation is.

  • Fantasy Football draft strategies for large leagues?

The conventional draft order is something like

    1) RB

    2) RB or WR

    3) QB

However, I have 16 teams in my league this year so the pickings will get slim by the second or third round. My picks are

12, 21, 44, 53, 76, 85, 108, 117...so I won't get an elite RB. Should I focus on elite players in other positions and get whatever RB is left in the later rounds? What positions would you draft?

  • RAM only sometimes recognized?

I am running Vista and have 2x1 GB (2GB total) RAM installed. Sometimes when I boot up it is all recognized, other times only 1 GB is recognized. I have not installed any programs or done anything else that may affect this. The system is stable either way, just wondering what is going on?

  • Examples of spiraling consumer complaints?

Can you give me some examples where an individual or small group has been upset with a company or product, and the complaint spiralled larger and larger?

For example, Jet Blue was forced to introduce the air passenger bill of rights after stranding some customers on the runway for hours. What other examples like this are there?

  • Foreign income taxation?

I've asked this before, but I'm hoping to get more responses this time.

Situation: worked in USA January-July, New Zealand August-December. NZ income/Total income=0.23; NZ income/taxable US income=0.34.

I have had taxes withheld already on my NZ income at a rate (28%) slightly higher than my marginal US tax rate (25%). Intuitively, this would indicate to me that all necessary tax on my NZ income has already been paid to NZ.

Yet, when I fill out form 1116 it seems to indicate that only .34*US tax owed is available for foreign tax credit.

So I owe more tax to the US on my foreign income, even though that income has already been taxed at a rate higher than the US. How can this be? Is this right?

  • Foreign tax- deductible or credit?

I have incomes this year from the US and New Zealand. Are taxes paid to New Zealand a deduction on my taxable US income, or are they a tax credit which reduce my US taxes by $1 for every dollar I paid in NZ tax?

As a follow up, NZ taxes are higher than US taxes, so I should owe the US nothing for my already taxed NZ income. correct?

  • Foreign income tax question?

I worked the first portion of 2007 in the US, but moved to New Zealand in early August and have been working here since.

Can I exclude my NZ income from US taxes, or can I at least deduct the taxes I already paid here in NZ so I'm not double taxed?

  • Colebrook-White equation?

The Colebrook-White equation is a well known implicit equation for calculating friction factors for pipe flow, which are then used to calculate head loss.

I recently came across another equation calling itself Colebrook-White which looks similar but is presented as an explicit equation to solve for velocity in the pipe. See the second equation on this page:

    http://www.jameshardiefrcpipes.com.au/home/below_g...

or here it is in plain text:

    V= -2sqrt(2gDS) * log (k/(3.7D) + 2.51viscosity/(Dsqrt(2gDS)))

Is this just a rearrangement of the classic formula (tough to check by hand due to log terms)? Does it assume full pipe flow, or can it be used for partially full pipes?

  • Palm Treo 650- not enough power to turn on phone?

I have a Palm Treo 650 which is behaving erratically. I bought a new battery, charged it fully, but when I go to turn on the phone function I get the message "not enough power to turn on the phone". This happens even though the battery indicator shows a full charge, and even happens when it is plugged in and actively charging. Once in a while it works after a soft reset, but not always. Ideas?

  • treo 650 won't charge?

I purchased two treo 650s from ebay. One works fine, with the other the battery drains completly just overnight. I ordered a new battery and tried to charge, but it won't work. When I plug in the AC adapter, the treo starts up but says "your battery is almost empty. shutting down". So it shuts down, and after leaving the AC adapter plugged in for several hours, it still doesn't have power.

The AC adapter works fine with the other treo 650 I have. Also, when I take the working treo's battery and place it in the non-working treo, the non-working treo suddenly works fine and takes charges from the AC adapter. So it appears it is just a battery issue. Any ideas?

  • Epic battle for control over my audio files?

I use iTunes to listen to music on my PC, but every time I start iTunes it says that it is not the default music player and asks me if I want to make it the default. I say yes every time, but every time I start the program it says it isn't the default.

How can I find out which program keeps hijacking the right to play my music? It's kind of funny watching the programs duke it out, but it's also annoying.

  • Can I be evicted if my landlord goes into foreclosure?

I understand that when a property changes owners, the new owner has to honor all pre-existing leases. But what happens if a landlord loses his/her property to foreclosure? Can the bank kick everyone out, or do they have to honor the pre-existing leases? Would you get your security deposit back?

  • Berkshire PE ratio?

Berkshire's A shares closed around $109,000 today, when it was reported that earnings rose 12% to 2.6 billion, or $1682 per share. Now 109,000/1632 yields a PE ratio of almost 65. I know that can't be right, it is too high by about a factor of 6 or 7 from what I know about Warren Buffet's value investing style. What am I missing in my calculation?

I got the numbers from this article on CNN:

  • Do people realize the Dow is still below its peak?

Practically every day now the Dow reaches a new NUMERIC high point. It seems that most people read these newspaper headlines and actually think we are wealthier now than ever before (as measured in stock wealth).

This is simply not true, due to the fall in the value of the US dollar. The dollar has lost over 1/3 of its value relative to most other 1st world currencies in the past ~5 years. So of course anything (including the Dow) that is measured in dollars has gone up- healthcare, food, oil- anything except cheap imports from China, whose currency is pegged to ours. If you adjust the Dow for this decline in the dollar, it would need to be around 21,000 today to be "as high" as it was in 2000.

The rising Dow is an illusion -- with shrinking dollars the real value has been going steadily down for years but because Duh-mericans don't understand math we think we're making money. Doubt me? Check out http://www.financialsense.com/fsu/editorials/2007/...
