  • first year gardening, sad tomato plant?

So far so good, I'm very proud of myself...:)

However, I planted a patio variety tomato in a medium size planter. The plant has gotten huge! (very tall and bushy), looks like it's about to pop out of it's housing. It's showing some fruit but it does not look very healthy to me, some of the branches are showing a few cracks and the leaves seem to be losing some color. After having a good look at it I'm guessing the plant is not getting enough nutrients from the soil. It seems very root heavy.

Soooooo, I'm wondering if it's safe to transplant it into a larger pot this late in the season.

    Thanks.

  • another tomato Q, sweet millions?

Are the sweet millions OK as patio tomatoes or are they strictly a garden variety?

I've ran out out of room in my little garden but still have some space for medium sized potted plants.

    Thanks

  • new to gardening, need help for a tomato plant?

This is my first year gardening. So far so good.

HOWEVER, one plant is refusing to cooperate and I think it might be on it's last leg.

I transplanted a mature tomato plant(bad decision) from pot to garden and I think I shocked it. Is there any way I can rescue it? (I've made sure to water it well) Is there a specific type of fertilizer I should use?

    Thanks.

  • Simmon Omega B-8 vs Durst 609 enlarger?

I have a darkroom. All is set up but the enlarger was on the borrow. Have to return it within a week.

So I'm looking for a replacement. I have a chance to buy the old Simmon Omega B-8 enlarger for 80 bucks.

I have not yet had a good look at it, will do this weekend.

Q-is it worth buying (providing it's in very good condition)?

My other budget option is Durst 609.

    Any input is appreciated.

    TIA

  • how do I get rid of avast (vista)?

Long story short, my buddy's comp went berserk. Blue screen of doom. Nothing I could do about it, so I went through recovery.

All's cool again, but the Avast app gave up. Program not working.

I tried to remove it in uninstall. Won't let me do it.

So I used Revo, got rid of some of the carp, but still could not remove the program in it's entirety.

Tried installing and unistalling again. Did not work.

Deleted all reg keys associated with avast. Nothing doing.

Still have the bleeping avast icon (with the red stop mark next to it) and the bleeping avast pop up telling us the program is bleeped.

    Any ideas other than format?

    TIA

  • external hard drive recommendations?

My laptop is running out of space (snaps, music, some video).

So I've been shopping around for a few gigs to add.

I have some drives in mind, made by Lacie, Maxtor, Seagate.

    What are your recommendations?

I'm not necessarily looking for a pocket drive, rather anything that's reliable, won't carp out in a few months....

    Thanks in advance.

  • IQ, Tamron AF 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 vs Tamron AF 28-200mm f/3.8 - f/5.6 XR ?

Still looking for a good zoom, Canon EF mount.

One of the YA members (Edwin) shot the Tamron 28-300 suggestion my way.

Considering price I'm also looking at the Tamron 28-200.

Wondering if IQ improves with the shorter zoom. Is it worth looking into?

I know I won't get as much zoom out of it as the 300, but my budget is an issue.

Though in the end I am willing to spend the extra 100 bucks, providing it's worth it.

    Any opinions?

Any other suggestions are much appreciated.

(and no, I can't afford a Canon zoom in the same class, unless there's one I don't know about that's high on IQ and low on price:)

  • Sigma 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 or Quantaray 70-300 mm DI f/4-5.6 or something else within $300 range?

I want a zoom. Canon EF mount. I was looking at something a tad more expensive, then my bank statement came in.....:)

I've heard folks having a good experience with the Sigma. Apparently for the price it's a good purchase.

The Quantaray is a cheap! lens from Ritz (150 bucks), some people like it, some think it's trash. A soon to be doorstop.

    Any opinions?

Other suggestions for a zoom in the 300 dollar range?

This will be casual use glass for the most part, BUT I don't want a s&$! lens even when shooting for fun.

  • Recommendations for Canon EOS/Canon compatible lenses?

Found one, the 10-22 wide. That's a $700 dent in my budget.

I'm looking for another, either a good zoom or a good walk around lens, perhaps a combination of both, nothing above 500 bucks as my lens budget has depleted quite a bit.

Any ideas on third party lenses? I'm eyeing a couple Sigmas.

Any suggestion will be much appreciated.

BTW, I shoot city scape, macro and portrait. So I'm in a bit of a pickle. Hard to find a good all around lens for 500 bucks or under.

Quite a few to choose from, I've looked at some, wondering about hands on experience.

  • all in one question sigma 10-20 (f 4-5.6) vs canon 10-22 (3.5-4.5)/Lexar SD cards?

I'm looking for a wide angle, can't break the bank but these two are in my budget. The Sigma is cheaper by over a hundred bucks, good reviews. The Canon is more expensive, lower stops, good reviews.

    Any opinions?

If anyone can recommend a good alternative to the aforementioned it will be much appreciated.

Second part, I've ran across Lexar SD 2G/2card package for next to nothing. Wondering how cheapo Lexar performs.

  • Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM and EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM ?

What go you think of these two lenses?

The latter is a part of the 40D kit, but apparently a very worthy piece of glass. I'd probably use it as a walk around lens, though wondering about quality and vignetting and also thinking quite a bit about the life of the format.

    Opinions?

The former is a wide angle and I'd use for city shots, landscapes.

With this I'm wondering about barrel distortion, vignetting and focus speed (though I'm not adverse to using MF).

    Thanks.

  • Canon EF 50mm f1.8 II?

    Oy.

This is one of the cheapest lenses on the market. And it's part of a DSLR package I have my eye on.

I've heard it stinks, you'll be lucky to get one clear picture out of 50. And I've heard it's very good for the price.

    Any opinions?

(I'd be using it indoors for the most part)

  • fixing scratch on pressure plate/old camera

I dug up an old cam, another Russian rangefinder. Everything works on it a ok, but there's a scratch on the pressure plate. It affects the photos.

Any ideas on a DIY fix?

I've heard that gunsmith blueing works, has anyone tried this method re camera repair?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Kiev 4M, Russian camera?

I asked this in another part of the forums, thought I'd pose the question here as well.

Just wondering if anyone is a fan of the camera.

I have a Russian rangefinder (Fed 5c) and I really love it, but it's hard to find lenses for it.

The Kiev 4M on the other hand has many options and it won't cost much to equip one with added lenses.

  • 35mm/120mm negative scanner?

Looking for a cheap (under 200 bucks) scanner that scans both 35mm and 120mm (color and b&w) negatives.

Hopefully one that supports Vista, but that's not completely necessary. An economy priced scanner that supports XP will do in a pinch.

    Thanks in advance

  • I'm thinking of getting a Holga 120N for fun?

    Couple of questions.

The camera has a hot shoe. What kind of flash does it support? I have a 20 year old Vivitar that I thought might work.

(I don't really care if it supports flash, it's just a toy camera, but it would be fun if it did)

I heard you can spool 35mm into it. If so, does anyone here know how to do it?

    Thanks.

  • What is dual exhaustion and what does it do?

I know, it's a stupid question......but sometimes I don't know my behind from my elbow.

I was driving from work and noticed a couple of cars had two mufflers on them.
