  • Astronomy/Physics questions?

Hi! I'm doing some astronomy work & I have a few questions. You can answer a few or all, anything would be helpful.

1.) If lines in a stellar spectrum show no Doppler shift, can the star be moving perpendicular to a line between Earth & the star?

2.) An object near the Earth's surface falls with a constant--

    Speed, velocity or acceleration?

3.) Any object with mass has which property?

Gravitational pull, or curvature of space-time. Or both?

4.) Is the total momentum in the universe constant?

Thank you so much. I would e-mail my professor but he doesn't respond. -_____-

  • Astronomy/Physics question?

    The astronomy problem is:

If you visited an asteroid 40 km in radius with a mass of 40 X 10^17 kg, what would be the circular velocity at its surface?

    a.) 81 m/s

    b.) 6670 m/s

    c.) 4.44e7 m/s

    d.) 115 m/s

    The formula I'm using is

Vc = (GM/r)^.5 (or all over a square root if you don't understand the ^.5

    My solution:

    ( (6.67 X 10^-11) (40 X 10^17) ) 40

then ALL OVER A SQUARE ROOT.

    I keep getting 2,582.634.... but that's not a choice!

Can someone explain to me what I'm doing wrong?

Thank you so much, I appreciate it. :)

  • What is a good haircut for my face shape?

Here is a picture of me:

    http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k155/wildkatsocc...

If you can please link me some pictures of celebrities or random people or mannequins with the hair that would match me, I would appreciate it. I'm going to get my hair cut tomorrow.

FYI: I would really like to keep my hair as long as it already is as possible--but if I really like the short hair pic you send me I may just cut it that way. My hair is 3/4 down my back but no layers. It is also VERY THICK and full of volume. (Be jealous. lol jk.) Just anything that would match my face. Thanks everybody!

  • How do I avoid split ends?

I just cut the tips of my hair. I used to wash it everyday [force of habit] until I read that that is the reason why my hair is so dry and damaged. My hair gets really frizzy and dry, but I want to begin to care for it good. I'm cutting down on the washing, but how do I avoid the split ends?

  • Calculus help on derivatives?

If you get the derivative of sinx the answer is cosx

and if you get the derivative of cosx the answer is -sinx

but is it right if i say the derivative of -sinx is cosx?

or is that going backwards and i'm wrong?

because i'm supposed to find the derivative of

    f(x)= xcosx-sinx

    so i went like this....

    f'(x)=(1)(-sinx)(cosx)

    f'(x)=-sinxcosx

    am i right?

so how do i do this?

    please help!

    quiz tomorrow!!

  • What kind of sonnet has this rhyme scheme?

    ababacacdedebb

    Sonnet 70

    by: Charlotte Smith

Is there a solitary wretch who hies

To the tall cliff, with starting pace or slow,

And, measuring, views with wild and hollow eyes

    It's distance from the waves that chide below;

Who, as the sea-born gale with frequent sighs

Chills his cold bed upon the mountain surf,

    With hoarse, half-utter'd lamentation, lies

Murmuring responses to the dashing surf?

In mood sadness, on the giddy brink,

    I see him more with envy that with fear;

He has no nice felicities that shrink

From giant horrors; wildly wandering here,

He seems (uncursed with reason) not to know

The depth or the duration of his woe.

  • Can you tell me what movie this is?

I watched it some time ago, the only parts I remember go like this.... There's this boy (preteen-ish) and he's at this house? (I think he was kidnapped.) And there's this FREAKY all-american looking couple who are just smiling and blonde and perfect and the boy asks to go to the bathroom. He steals the cellphone and he calls his mom and she comes over and forces herself in. In the end (well not of the movie but of that scene) the couple turn out to be some FREAK child molester/torturers and the little brother was suffocating in a bag in a wardrobe closet. Idk, it's super freaky i loved it. Can anyone tell me that movie? and there's another scene like a shootout at an icerink, the boy and his dad? Please help!

  • What is this literary device/term?

When a writer uses words to emphasize the piece of literature/scene to a certain mood or something. For example : "The luminous lamp glowed bright on his bedside table, leaving a warming, lingering feeling. He shut his eyes but could still see spots of buttercups behind his eyelids."

I made that sentence up. But i remember my literary teacher from last year used a word for this when writers use it. It's a term, i just can't remember?

  • What is that literary term called?

It's when you use a sense for something that doesn't belong for that sense. For example: "Those grapes smelled purple." Or, "That tree felt stinky." I'm annotating a book so I need to know that word. It's a literary term.

  • What's going on with my weight?

Ok, so since i've been working, i've been "losing pounds." I work 4 days out of the week, from noon to 9 at night. I only eat in the afternoon, and when I get home. (at 9, when i come home, even though i know that's not good.) I've been working for 3 weeks now, and i've lost like 7 pounds. Is this good? Because my eating patterns are definitely not good. I work in a grocery store, bagger.

  • How to be more flexible?

Ok, well I'm pretty flexible already. I can do my right split barely my left, and a pretty decent high kick. What I want to do is be able to do a chinese split. (the one where your legs are sticking out to your left and right.) I have to be able to do it by August. Is it possible, if I start stretching everyday from now on? I'm willing to work hard every day. All I want to know is if it's possible, and if it is are there any special stretches I can do to help on?

When I stretch I usually do strattle positions, splits to right and left, and the frogger. those are usually the most difficult ones I do.

  • Are neck massagers safe?

My mom somehow obtained a neck massager. My brother immediately discouraged her because he claims it to be unsafe; supposedly, it's harmful to have vibrations in your neck. Can his allegation be true? I would just be needing a yes or no, so I can inform my mom. Thank you all.

  • Song from the movie "The Notebook"?

    It's when they're dancing,

both in the middle of the street,

and when they're old, and dining,

when he's trying to get her to remember.

It's an old song, i know that,

    some of they lyrics go..

"I'll be seeing you... in all the [special] places..."

I'm not too sure about the word special, maybe it's usual.

At any rate, it's a woman singing, if there are different versions,

    please give me her version.

    Many thanks. (:
