1 AnswerProgramming & Design8 years agoHow does a double tax treaty work in practice?
I am trying to understand what a double tax treaty is and how it works in practice. I understand that such a treaty is there to ensure that a person in not taxed in both countries when he is resident in one but living and working in another but an struggling to understand how it works in practice and where tax is paid.
In the scenario I have for a project the subject is a UK resident who has moved to Austalia where he is now resident. He is not employed in Australia but lives off his savings (which are in a UK bank) and the bank interest he receives from the savings. His savings are such that he receives £10,000 interest per year (AUS$15,000). (He must lawfully declare his interest earnings to the appropriate authorities)
I have used the Deloittes tax treaty rates comparison and it gives a rate of 10% (http://www.dits.deloitte.com/TaxTreatyRates/result... The income tax rate for earnings of AUS$15,000 is 15% (above his allowance of $6,000) in Australia
Does this mean that
a) He will pay tax of 10% on all of his interest
or
b) It will be treated like a 'normal' income in Australia and he will be taxed at 15% above $6,000
or
c) It would be treated in the same way as UK income for a UK resident and pay tax at UK rates over and above his allowance
Also,
a) If he moved to another country where the double tax treaty rate is 0% would he pay tax in that country?
and
b) If he moved his money off shore would he still pay tax in Australia and at what rate?
Sorry there are so many questions but any answers would help greatly to my understanding for the project. (Please do not advise that I see an accountant as it is for a project and not for investing purposes!!)
Thanks for any replies in advance.
2 AnswersUnited Kingdom8 years agoIn which countries do you not pay income tax on your worldwide income.?
In the UK a person pays income tax based on his or her worldwide income. In which countries throughout the World can you reside and only pay income tax on your income in that particular country and not on any other income earned in other countires
3 AnswersUnited Kingdom9 years agoIncome tax on interest?
I am from the UK thinking of permanently moving to a country where you do not pay income tax on worldwide income - the only income tax paid is on earnings from that country.
Will I have to pay income tax in the UK on any interest I earn on money kept in a UK bank.
I believe that the country I am looking to move to has a double taxation agreement with the UK if this is of any relevance.
Many thanks for any assistance
2 AnswersUnited Kingdom9 years agoNotice for termination of assured shorthold tenancy following flood - Landlord and Tenant Act?
I rented a flat in London for 6 months during which time there was a flood in the building due to burst water pipes (not pipes in the flat I was renting) which caused substantial damage to the flat I was renting. I was required to, I believed, temporarily move out but a couple of weeks later it was found that the flat was uninhabitable due to the damage and I had to permanently move out (this is not disputed by the landlord). The landlord has repaid some of the rent that I believe is due to be repaid but not all. I have read through the tenancy agreement and there is nothing in there about early termination of the agreement.
A couple of simple questions. In these circumstances
a) Does the landlord need to serve a Notice of termination to bring an end to the tenancy agreement?
b) If not, what date is taken as the date of termination of the tenancy agreement?
Many thanks for any assistance.
2 AnswersRenting & Real Estate9 years agoHalal food in cooking?
I have a basic understanding of halal meat - in the manner that it is slaughtered and that it must be slaughtered in the name of Allah.
In certain countries, say, KFC, sell Halal Chicken which is fired and spiced. Would the spices require to be treated or handled in a certain way? Similarly, would the oil it is fried in have to be a certain type of oil or treated differently from, say, oil bought in a supermarket.
Also, if, say, a chicken stir fry is made with Halal chicken do the vegetable have to be treated or cooked in a certain way or could you just buy vegetables from an average supermarket?
Pardon my ignorance and thanks in advance for any answers.

2 AnswersAstronomy & Space1 decade agoWhat is the legislation to force ebay to provide address of seller?
I have recently been the subject of a scam by somebody on Ebay. I have the person's phones numbers and email address but do not have his address. I have requested these details from Ebay but they will not provide this persons address to enable me to take the appropriate action (either criminal or civil). Ebay have been less than helpful.
I believe there is legislation that should force ebay to provide this person's address.
Can anybody confirm (or otherwise) if this is te case and what this legislation is.
Many thanks for any assistance.

4 AnswersDecorating & Remodeling1 decade agoGame show conundrum - better to change choice or stick with original pick?
I have read this a conundrum on a number of occasions over the past year or so. A contestant on a game has one prize which is placed in one of 3 boxes. He chooses one box (box A) which has a 33.3% chance of having the prize. The show host then unveils one of the other boxes (box C), knowing that the prize is not in box C, to show that the prize is not in that box and gives the contestant the chance to swap his original box to the other remaining box (swap box A to box B). All explanations say that he is better to swap, although I don't accept the explanation!
I have 2 further questions
1) If the host does not know which box has the prize in but still unveils one of the boxes to find the prize is not in the box he unveiled, is the contestant still better to change his first choice?
2) If, instead of 3 boxes, there are numerous (say 22 as in deal or no deal - where he has a 4.55% chance of having the main prize) and the contestant gets to the last two boxes and still has not eliminated the main prize is he still better off swapping the boxes?
Thanks for your thoughts!

I want to lay turf in my garden and have taken up the paving stones in my garden and found they were placed on a bed of a couple of inches sand with some small stones underneath the sand.
If I put nutrients on the sand and turf on top with the turf grow?
If not, what do I need to do (I do not want to remove the sand nor to put a lot of new soil down) to ensure the grass does not die?

6 AnswersGarden & Landscape1 decade agoCapital gains tax when selling house?
Me and my son want to buy a house. I am lucky enough to have a little cash and will be paying for the house. I will pay the cash but put the house in joint names. We then wish to refurbish it and, hopefully, sell it for a profit. Assuming we make a profit,
a) Will my son be able to take half of the profit as a capital gain (even though he has not paid any capital but he is joint owner) and if not, is there any way around this?
b) If we can both count the profit as a capital gain, will be both get our tax free allowance?
Many thanks for any replies

1 AnswerOther - Computers1 decade agoHow do I crystallize my Capital Gains Tax?
In May of this year I invested some cash into Unit Trusts. The value of the Units Trusts has increased by slightly over the allowance of £10,100 and I want to crystallize my gain. What is the best way to do this (simple way - do not want any fancy schemes). Do I have to:
a) Sell ALL of the units, take the gain and then re-invest
or
b) Just sell sufficient units to cover the CGT allowance of £10.100
or
c) Another method (please assist with this!)
Also, to crystallise the gain, how long must the £10,100 be in cash (rather than another form of investment).
Many thanks for your anticipated assistance.
