  • Which verses show that Christians should not expect further doctrinal revelation?

In other words, we have the Bible. Which verses in the Bible show that the Bible is all we need and that we shouldn't expect anything else?

The one I know of is this:

Jude 1:3 "Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints."

This clearly says that our faith was "once for all delivered to the saints." Such language indicates finality.

Some say that the following verse can be used to show this:

Revelation 22:18 "I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book"

...but I think it can be validly argued that the context John is referring to is the Book of Revelation and not the entire Bible. I think the verse from Jude is more specific since it refers to our doctrinal beliefs.

Are there any other verses that essentially say the same thing?

Note: Even if there is only on verse, I believe it is enough...it's the Word of God. Also, I believe that God speaks to us today, but not in sense of providing doctrinal revelation (we have the Bible for that), and that He wouldn't say anything that contradicts the Bible.

  • What has helped you keep your focus on Jesus?

Colossians 3:1-3 "If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. (2) Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. (3) For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God."

I think "prayer and the Bible" is what most people say, and those are accurate answers. Can anyone get more specific? Is there something you have done which helps to keep your mind focused on Christ throughout the day? If I go more than 2 days or so without reading the Bible, I can tell a difference in what I focus on.

I look forward to your thoughts!

  • Are Christians supposed to judge?

As a Bible-believing Christian, I don't understand why so many stop at verse 1 and don't read the rest:

Matthew 7:1-5 "Judge not, that you be not judged. (2) For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. (3) Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? (4) Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when there is the log in your own eye? (5) You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.

This is clear that Jesus is only condemning hypocritical judging. He then says that we are in fact to correct our bother, but only if we have corrected ourselves of the same sin.

I am not saying that we should go looking for things in other people to condemn. Not at all. But if someone tells me they're engaged in sin (let's say sex before marriage), it's for the person's own good that I call sin "sin" and not turn a blind eye. The whole point of biblical correction is to lead the person to repentance - not condemnation.

Also, what do we do with these?

John 7:24 "Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment."

1 Corinthians 5:12-13 "For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? (13) God judges those outside. "Purge the evil person from among you."

    ...and sincere answers are given?

In the religious section here, it seems like less than 10% of the questions are genuine.

  • Christians: Have you read the entire Bible?

If you haven't, have you read the entire New Testament?

    Please respond like this:

Yes/No [Have you read the entire Bible?]

Yes/No [Have you read the entire New Testament?]

    Optional comments

If you're not a Christian, please indicate that in your comments. If you are a Christian, there is no need to indicate this since the question was directed at you.

    Thanks!

  • Is it illegal to sleep in your car in a parking lot?

I'm not talking about long-term. Just one or two nights if I'm on a trip.

  • Christians: Why do you attack atheists?

First: I am a Christian, so of course I don't agree with atheists. If you're a Christian, don't you want atheists to be saved? Attacking someone is not a biblical (or good) witnessing tactic.

Disagreement with atheists is fine. Debating atheists (even passionate debate) is fine. But hostility toward them is NOT fine because it contradicts the spirit of Christ.

Atheists: I just want you to understand that not everyone who calls themselves a Christian really is a Christian. Even Jesus said this:

Matthew 7:20-23 "So then, you will know them by their fruits. (21) "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. (22) "Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?' (23) "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.'"

Please don't be put off by hostility from those claiming to be Christians, because if they're acting in a way that isn't Christian, then, as Jesus said, "you'll know them by their fruits."

Anyway, I just wanted to get that off of my chest. Christians, please keep the debates and discussion civil. Let's be good witnesses.

  • What made modern Christians swing from Legalism to the opposite error of Free Grace?

It seems like if you go to any Protestant church, everyone there can tell you that "you're saved by grace through faith." That's true (Eph 1:8-9). But if you even so much as hint that we still need to obey the Bible, they call you a Legalist. Some even say that we can do whatever we want because works don't matter.

What brought about this swing, since Legalism and Antinomianism (grace is free so I can do whatever I want) are both unbiblical?

When people include "10 points" in the subject line, it's a waste of space and just annoying. What do you think?

  • Can a cop enter a house if the husband says yes but the wife says no?

I'm not talking about warrants, nor am I talking about a situation where the cops have been called to the house because of a domestic disturbance.

And, if it's an apartment, does that make a difference?

  • Can a cop ask to see your ID if you're just walking down a public sidewalk?

..or walking through public parking lot during business hours? I'm talking about a regular person (not drunk, not causing problems). And if he asks, do I have the right to refuse?
