  • Unexplained rat wounds...?

So, I have 5 female rats living together in a cage, my first three i had alone an older girl who's 2 was the mother of the other two she lived with who are now 1. my other two (1 year old also) i adopted from the RSPCA and after the introductions have been living in my other three's cage successfully for 3 and a half weeks, no fights, they sleep, groom and play with each other fine. Just now i've let them all out of the cage for free range time and noticed one of the newer ones has a massive gash like her skins been pulled off, but it's not bleeding more like the watery sore skin you get after a carpet burn or something. I'd have thought that after living together fine for that amount of time they would be okay, and since this happened in the larger space of my room rather than actually occurring in the cage itself i'm wondering whether maybe she got it caught on something sharp that i've been unable to rat proof myself, as i heard no squeaks or fights and they're all running around playing just fine now.

The one with the cut is indeed the smallest of all my rats, the cut is just behind her ear and about a cm long.

there are male rats living in my sisters room next door, whether that has anything to do with it i doubt, but thought it would be good for you to know incase this indeed has something to do with them being in heat or something.

    Many thanks in advance.

  • Dog breathing problems (Lowchen)?

    Hi,

The past two days my 7 year old female Lowchen has woken up in the middle of the night, like tonight and just early in the morning with this pig sounding snorting (for lack of better explanation) and struggling to breathe the reason it didn't worry me the other day is because throughout the day she's be fine it's only when she wakes up.

The 'episodes' have caused her to shake and she tries to get closer to me for comfort, so it does scare her.

She's not overweight, the breed does have a short snout which i know is linked with reverse sneezing etc but my yorkie does this but its completely different, it doesn't scare him and he's only two so i figured this would have started earlier for her too?? She's not had any history of diseases or anything just bad teeth and lowest grade of heart murmur which some vets didnt even pick up on until we mention that they found it last time. She's vaccinated every year health checked etc. My parents are away for a week, just gone, so i was wondering if anyone has information on Lowchens being prone to anything like this or whether it could be tracheal collapse or something like that, i don't know because it only seems to be happening in the mornings for about half an hour.. no signs through the day like my yorkie who reverse sneezes when he eats treats and plays or gets excited

    Many thanks in advance,

    Alison

  • Which cage should i upgrade to?

I currently have a Savic Freddy 2 which houses my two eldest female rats which are comfortable in there (wouldn't have more than them in there), my other cage is a Critter 2 which is housing 3 young females who are growing fast, and I'd like to upgrade the Critter 2 to either a Ferplast Jenny or a Ferplast Furet Plus.

Opinions on which you would get? Previous owners comments on either would be appreciated too as i've read mixed reviews on them.

I did want a larger cage than the Freddy 2 for my 3 females and i think the Furet has the same base size but a bit taller so it's not really much bigger, but I think it's better built than the jenny.

  • Rat fell from a height and i think something may be wrong?

Hey, I rarely ask questions about the rats because i researched so much before i got them and while i have them but this isn't coming up at all, i don't know what to do.

I was washing my rat and treating her because of mites etc and she really hates water well i was washing her in the sink and she sorta jumped right out and onto the floor, she sat there for a while then went off to hide which isn't like her at all.. she always stays around me. Anyway when i did get hold of her i took her straight to her cage to calm down a bit and now i've come to let her out to play and normally she's so active and running around but she's just fallen asleep...

I was eating some pizza and took a bit of the crust and gave it her she tried to eat it but seemed in pain while she was chewing on it... so i gave her something more soft and she still she took a long time 3 minutes probably and still just left it i knew she was in pain cause she was turning her head to chew it better in different places and closing her eyes a lot. I've just put her in her cage now and the doors are open normally she wouldn't stop trying to get out but she's climbed right up to the hammock and is sorta licking her fingers and trying to sleep. She looks a bit dopey really... like she's just coming round from anesthetic.

Right now i'm softening some of her food in warm water so it's easier for her to eat as i think it's her teeth she may have hurt.. should i keep watching her in case she's just in shock and her pain gets better because she won't let me look in her mouth, she never does. If i have to take her to the vet in your opinion I will but i wouldn't want to have them just tell me there's nothing they can do?

P.S will i need to keep her in my hospital cage (one level) in case she has concussion or something and falls from the top of her cage to the bottom? and to stop her cage mates eating all of her soft food that's just for her? at the moment she's just sleeping.
