  • Help with this last part of my chemistry question, please?

    Electrochemistry help?

    This is a 3-part problem. I solved the first two, and can't seem to figure out the last one. I have listed the 1st two problems in case they are required for the 3rd part. Any help would be much appreciated!

    a) How many coulombs are required to plate a layer of chromium metal 0.28mm thick on an auto bumper with a total area of 0.27m^2 from a solution containing CrO4? The density of chromium metal is 7.20 g/cm^3.

    ANSWER: 6.1*10^6 C

    b)What current flow is required for this electroplating if the bumper is to be plated in 10.9s ?

    ANSWER: 5.6*10^5 A

    c)If the external source has an emf of +5.6 V and the electrolytic cell is 69% efficient, how much electrical energy is expended to electroplate the bumper?

    Part c is the problem I'm having issues with. I'd appreciate any guidance with it. Thank you.

  • Cathode and Anode help in Chemistry?

    In an experiment, we had three different galvanic cells. The first consisted of the solution SnCl2 and Cu(NO3)2. The 2nd had SnCl2 and Pb(NO3)2. The 3rd had Cu(NO3)2 and Pb(NO3)2. How can I determine which is the anode and the cathode in each cell to then write out the shorthand cell designations for each with the || lines and such? How do I determine which is oxidized and reduced? Thank you for any help :).

  • Calculus 3 Conceptual Help?

    Can anyone let me know if these are true or false and if so maybe why? I'm going through practice problems at the back of my textbook and these ones are a little difficult since they are more conceptual and that isn't exactly my forte, so I need practice and understanding :/.

    1. If the partial derivative in respect to x=the partial derivative in respect to y, then f(x,y) is a constant.

    2. If (x,y)= x^2+y^2, then gradient f is perpendicular to the graph of f.

    3. There exists exactly 2 functions with the following partial derivatives, fx(x,y)=4x^3y^2-3y^4 and fy(x,y)=2x^4y-12xy^3

    4. Given f(x,y) is a smooth surface at (a,b) then there exits a unit vector u such that absolute value of gradient f(a,b) is less than gradient f(a,b)*vector u

    5.(0,0) is a critical point for the function f(x,y)=sin(x)cos(y). If true, state if it is a global or local minimum, maximum, or saddle point.

    Thanks for any help whatsoever.

  • General Chemistry practice help #2?

    Calculate the pH of a solution prepared by mixing 15.0 mL of 0.10 M NaOH and 30.0 mL of 0.1 M benzoic acid (Ka=6.5×10-5).

    The Ka for hypochlorous acid (HClO) is 3.0×10-8. Calculate the pH after 10.0, 20.0, and 40.0 mL of 0.100 M NaOH have been added to 40.0mL of 0.100 M HClO.

    Any help with these would be great. Please explain how to do them and don't just post the answer. That's not really going to help me understand it. Thank you!

  • Find a non-zero vector that has a magnitude of pi?

  • Calculus 3 vector help, please?

    Let vector v and vector w be any 2 nonzero vectors in 3-space, which are not parallel to one another.

    Write expressions for the vectors representing the following:

    a)a vector parallel to vector v with a magnitude of pi units

    b)a vector perpendicular to vector v and vector w

    c)what is the value of vector v times the cross product of vector v times vector w so v(v*w), and explain

    I'm really stuck on this problem. I came up with the vector pi/(square root of 3) for each of x y and z because when you do the magnitude of that (square root of x squared + y squared + z squared) you get pi. So I just multipled it by 5 and I said that was my v since for vectors to be parallel, they have to be multiples of each other. Am I doing this right? I'm not sure what to use for w or if I can use any numbers. I know to be perpendicular the dot product has to be 0, but I'm not sure how to get numbers that work for b and c? Please help.

  • Why is this the right answer to this chemistry question?

    Why is this the answer to this chemistry question?

    Which of the following is true?

    A)if we know that a reaction is an elementary reaction, then we know its rate law.

    B)since intermediate compounds can be formed, the chemical equations for the elementary reactions in a multistep mechanism do not always have to add to give the chemical equation of the overall process

    C)in a reaction mechanism, an intermediate is identical to an activated complex

    The answer is clearly A, but why are the other answers also not true? I answered this on my test and got it right only because I knew that first one was true, but I don't understand the others to verify they are false. Please explain why the other 2 answers aren't true.

    A molecule that can decrease enzyme activity by binding the free enzyme or the corresponging enzyme-substrate complex is known as a(n) _____ inhibitor.

    A) competitive

    B) non-competitve

    C) uncompetitive

    I chose A on my test because I was confused by the in-class notes and the answer is actually B. Can you please explain why it is a non-competitive inhibitor and why it is not the other 2?

  • Chemistry Pressure Question?

    Equation: Mg(s) + 2HCl(aq) → MgCl2 (aq) + H2(g)

    Based on a maximum system pressure of 1.5 atm (0.5 atm above ambient), calculate the maximum mass of magnesium that can be used without exceeding the maximum pressure. Assume hydrogen behaves like an ideal gas. (R = 82.05746 mL-atm/mol-K) and that the free volume is 125 mL.

    Can someone please show me the steps that would help me to solve this? I'm not even sure if that equation is required for this problem, but it was part of the last problem and these questions are under the same experiment. I'm just stuck on this one. Thank you for your help.

  • Limiting Reactant Question?

    If 20 mL of 1.0 M hydrochloric acid reacts with a 2.00 cm length of magnesium ribbon (2.00cm L × 0.300cm W × 0.00300cm T) (density = 1.738 g/cm3), determine the limiting reactant. (Identify the reactant in excess as well as the limiting one.)

    You don't have to actually calculate the answer, just please show steps as to how I would go about solving this? The dimensional analysis stuff gets a little complicated at times and I miss steps. Thank you.

    What messages are seen in beauty pageants, barbie and even celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe in terms of beauty and even sexuality? Make sure to discuss all 3. How are they able to remain popular during conservative times in the popular culture such as in the 1950's? How do they uphold some of the messages that dominate the time and what do they say about race and class?

  • How to calculate amount of solid that you will not want to exceed?

    Here's the balanced equation:

    Mg(s) + 2HCl(aq) ---> MgCl2(aq) + H2(g)

    Here's the question:

    III.How do you relate the quantity of gas (in moles) to reactant masses? What is the ratio of moles of reactant to moles of gas in the balanced equation from part I? Calculate the amount of the solid (Mg) that you will not want to exceed.

    I'm not even sure how to go about this. Which reactant am I using for the ration with the gas? Would it just be the solid? So I'd use a 1:1 ratio for Mg and H2? What would I do from there?

  • Programming in C issue?

    I'm new to c as I've only been in my college course for it for a few weeks and it's my first time every dealing with programming, so forgive me if I sound very ignorant with this question, because quite honestly, I am with programming. I've spent quite a few hours just trying to make this simple code that will integrate a function. The directions were specifically "Write a program to integrate an arbitrary time-domain signal, with a variable sample interval and variable limits of integration. Test your program on a simulated time-domain signal." The directions themselves sort of confused me, but here is my code. It keeps coming up with errors in my compiler that I don't quite understand yet. Am I on the right track at least? Do I have easy fixes to make or some serious ones? I'd appreciate any help. Thank you. Remember, I'm a beginner with C programming.

    #include <stdio.h>

    #include <conio.h>

    #define N 1000

    main() {

    float i, a, b, sum = 0;

    printf(

    "\nThis program will integrate a function between two boundary limits.");

    printf("\n\nEnter the first boundary limit:");

    scanf("%f", &a);

    printf("\nEnter the second boundary limit:");

    scanf("%f", &b);

    if (a > b) {

    i = a;

    a = b;

    b = i;

    }

    for (i = a; i < b; i += (b - a) / N) {

    y = x * x + 2 * x - 4;

    sum += y * (b - a) / N;

    }

    printf("\n\nValue of integration is:%.3f", sum);

    getch();

    return;

    }

  • Help with programming in c? Not c++, not c#, the old plain and simple language of just c?

    For my biomedical engineering courses in college, I have to take a couple classes in programming with the first being the oiginal language of just c. I know it's an older language, but it's apart of my major's requirements. My professor had us all raise our hands on the first day to see who has had any experience with programming before. 2/75 kids have had experience yet he still teaches us and talks to us as though we've done this before. He'll say okay and what do we do next? And gets a little frustrated when no one answers and then he writes down parts of the code that we should have answered, that we've literally never seen before. Regardless, I'm working on a few practice codes that he suggested we all do before our huge project coming up. If anyone can please help me program these, I'd really appreciate it and maybe we could possibly speak privately through email and you could guide me in the simple set up of the codes? Please help :/ I have no idea what to put in these.

    Here are the practice codes he wanted us to do. If anyone could please show me how to code it and walk me through the steps and what each of the lines mean, I'd appreciate it. I could really use the extra practice for the big project coming up. Thank you.

    1. Integration.

    Write a program to integrate an arbitrary time-domain signal, with a variable

    sample interval and variable limits of integration. Test your program on a

    simulated time-domain signal.

    2. Differentiation.

    Write a program to calculate the derivative of an arbitrary input function,

    with arbitrary duration and arbitrary limits. Remember to check that you

    start calculating at least at the second data point. Test your program on a

    simulated time-domain signal.

    3. Write a program that creates an arbitrary sinusoidal waveform with

    parameters input from the user (via file or keystroke), passes the signal to a function that performs integration (from #1) and differentiation (#2) and

    receives the result and writes it to a file.

    4. Write a program to perform an automated search of an input file and output

    the number of prime numbers contained in that file.

    Also, I am in calc II so I know what these programs are supposed to do, I just don't know how to make them do it. And yes I have a compiler. I use bloodshed. Thank you for the help.

  • Calculus help: Points of Inflection?

    I understand this is such an easy concept, and maybe I'm jsut doing my calculations wrong, but can someone please help me find the points of inflection for this equation? Maybe my online homework system isn't recognizing my rounding or decimals or whatever. Please help.

    ((t^2)-1)/((t^2)+1)

    I jsut need to find the points of inflections for this equation. So far I've tried (-0.5, 0) (0.5,0) and (-0.6,0) (0.6,), but it said both were wrong, yet my calulator shows differently. Please help?
