Hi. I recently moved back to Oklahoma after a 5 year move to Reno, Nevada. Circumstances beyond my control brought me back to OK. I love to design and maintain small gardens. I write poetry and love to sing....beyond earshot of others. I'm polite like that. I live with my (just over) 2 1/2 year old daughter and one gentle pussy cat plus one tempermental 17 year old cat. Update: Sept. 10, 2008 A few days ago I had to put my 17 year old cat to sleep. He was a month shy of his 18th birthday. I'm feeling pretty blue. I'm bewildered by the losses so many of us must endure. Sometimes, the road less travelled, seems to suffer some very deep ruts. .

  • Lawn newly seeded. How do I keep from having to water all day?

I just had my lawn seeded. All prep and seeding was done professionally. I was told to water twice a day to keep the surface moist. Well, I've been watering and just a few hours later it looks like the surface of my lawn is dry. So, I water again and still, my lawn doesn't "seem" to be staying moist on the top. I live in Oklahoma. It's windy and now it's getting warm, mid eighties this week. It takes about 3 hours to water my entire lawn. So it seems like just when I'm finished watering, where I first started watering already looks like it's drying out. Am I doing something wrong or is twice a day watering enough?

  • Desk with walnut veneer warped. How can I repair this without removing the veneer?

Hi, I bought a desk at a thrift store, it's in great condition except for the side that has walnut veneer. It has apparently been wet at one time and has warped, there are some cracks in the warped area. The damage covers an area about 10 inches from the bottom of the desk and only on the front area. I don't want to remove it as I know it'll be a job I won't want to tackle.

I was wondering if I could steam this warped area until the wood is malleable (if possible) then add carpenters glue under the upraised area, get a length of wood (that I already have) and apply C clamps for a couple of days? Does this sound like something that would work? I can sand it down after it dries.

Any idea's handy-people? Thanks so much for any helpful responses and remarks!

  • Do you know anything about tree diseases?

We have a pear tree in our back yard. It is approximately 10 years old and I do know it should live much longer than that. Unfortunately, many of the leaves started turning brown and then rapidly crunchy as did the limb, very soon the entire limb died. Its spreading over the whole tree now, but it is trying to put out new leaves and branches, they too are getting consumed by this mystery illness.

About 50 feet away we had a bush that put out lovely yellow flowers (sorry, don't know what kind it was). This bush was about 8 years old and kept trimmed over the years at about 4 feet tall. Not long after the pear tree started turning this bush did as well. Turned completely brown and 'crunchy'. I was just pulling on the top of one of the dead looking branches and the whole darned bush pulled right up out of the ground. It weighed nearly nothing and was completely dehydrated, even the dead parts were dead! Never had anything like that happen.

Anyone have any ideas on what may be going on here?
