  • RF modulator output strength: would this work?

I'd like to record my Wii via a capture card at the same time as playing it on my television (can't play via the card, too much lag.)

Here's the setup I'm considering right now:

Wii Composite Cables > RF Modulator > Coax Splitter > Television + Capture Card

Unless RF modulators output their coax signals so weak that they can't be split, I don't see why this wouldn't work, but I wanted to get some feedback on it before I go blow the money. Yay or nay?

  • If video file formats are just containers, why isn't it possible to rip content out of them without reencoding?

If video file formats are just containers, why isn't it possible to rip content out of them without re-encoding? I know that the containers allow things that the raw encodings don't, but you think it would at least be an option in programs like Handbrake, if only to move it to another container losslessly.

I looked through the Wikipedia article for "Container format (digital)" but didn't find anything that I thought would make something like this impossible. Can someone explain this to me? (The more info the better.)

  • Name this music video?

I saw the video on MTV or VH1 weeks (maybe months) ago. The singer was a white woman. Every time I try to recall her face I just get the girl from A Fine Frenzy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Fine_Frenzy) but I'm almost positive that her hair *was* red.

Anyway, she was "shrunk down" and inside of one of those old-time video booths made out of wood (pay a quarter and watch a short movie), with lots of animated gears and cogs spinning around her. The side of the booth had a red emblem on it, something like "25¢ Love Songs" and during the video a few people peered into the booth to watch her play a piano or sing. The song itself was light and happy-sounding (musical style, at least. Can't remember a single lyric.)

Hopefully someone recognizes the video from the description and can help me out, I really liked the song.

  • Linux apps & ARM architecture?

I'm considering putting together a portable gaming device, and was planning on using a Pico-ITX board, mostly because it was x86 and could run Windows, but would ARM+Linux be an option?

I know that Linux has a decent selection of classic console emulators, but (without actually having a distribution) how can I find out whether there are ARM-compatible versions available?

If I were to ask a few of these emulator devs to create ARM-compatible versions, how much work would be involved? Could I maybe even do it myself? (read somewhere that it's basically just a recompile, but this could be false)

    Any info greatly appreciated. =)

  • Do you capitalize your files names?

Are your folders/files named in "Lolcat Pictures" or "lolcat pictures" fashion? (If you have some capitalization rule(s) feel free to explain)

  • Name this cartoon? (Recent, CGI)?

I saw a couple images of the new Iron Man: Armored Adventures series and it reminded me of another show that was on years ago, with almost the same exact style of animation. http://www.imdb.com/media/rm2649982976/tt0837143 But I remember this show as being a little prettier.

I can't remember the name and it's driving me crazy. It was set in the future, the main characters were an older teen boy and his younger teen sister, who he had to protect from the government because she had some kind of psychic powers. The boy had his own ship (more like a flying car), and I remember a large airship that was owned by an old professor-type character that was used as their base of operations. I believe that water was also a scarce resource, but it could've been something else. If this rings a bell for anyone, please help me out.

  • The Killers' "All These Things That I've Done" video -- isn't there another one with the same theme?

I'm trying REALLY hard to remember a music video with The Killers in those same cowboy outfits. (video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXkWW_q_OTM&feature... ) I searched Universal Music's videos and didn't find it, so it could be from a different band (is the video a parody/reference to something?). All I can remember is "orange," the video was set in a desert, and that there were some futuristic aspects to it (either techo-ish parts of the song, or...laser-guns and such...)

It's driving me crazy. I wish I could give more information, but that's all I remember.

  • Image editor with a one-window interface (for Mac)?

I'm looking for an image editor, something similar to GIMP (or even Photoshop, if possible), but all the open source and free ones have their interface split up into 3-4 boxes. Is there an image editing program with a one-window interface, or maybe an addon for GIMP that will make it that way? (OS X compatible)

  • Is the "Space Olympics" song from SNL original, or was the music from another song?

It sounded really familiar the first time I heard it, so I'm wondering if the music was taken from another song. You can listen to the song here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFYVvB12W1U

  • Does the "SecuROM" DRM also affect OS X?

I don't want to install ANYTHING that can't be reversed or that also installs something else without asking me for confirmation. Many people are complaining about the SecuROM DRM, but all of the problems I've seen discussed (complained about loudly) seem to affect Windows.

"SecuROM 7.x, if run under a non-admin user account, installs its own service called UAService7.exe, which works in ring 3 of the computer's operating system." Is there an OS X version of "UAService7.exe" that is also installed on Mac systems?

"Claimed problems relating to SecuROM include prevention of proper launching of games, disabling of CD/DVD/Blu-ray disc burners, and disruption of antivirus programs. Some users have reported severe damage caused by SecuROM, resulting in system failures that required complete system reformats to fix." I know that UNIX (and especially its permissions system) makes OS X very secure, but I can't be too sure.

So, does anyone know if these problems also effect Macs?

  • How can I get this piece of popcorn out of my throat?

There is a popcorn shell fragment stuck in my throat (these things are way too sharp) and it's really really irritating. I've tried to knock it out with a lot of methods: swallowing hard, swallowing water really hard, coughing really hard, swallowing food before it's chewed up as much as it normally would be, etc. but nothing is helping. If I don't get it out soon enough, could bigger problems develop, like infections or even tissue growing over the shell and making it stuck for good? Someone please help me get rid of this thing =/

  • Open all .xyz files with a certain program in OS X?

I can set specific files to open in VLC, but I have 500+ songs and don't want to go through 'Rightclick > Open With > Other... > Always Open With, VLC' for that many. I'd use iTunes but I'm on an old iBook G4 and it's a big performance hit. So, is there a way to set all .mp3 files to open in VLC? (I'm using Tiger, if it matters)

  • Is there a Firefox addon (or another program) that will save all the sites I visit for offline viewing?

I want to be able to set the addon to download all sites I visit to a folder so I can visit them offline. It would be similar to Firefox's offline mode, but it would be more stable (I get errors on pages I've been to only a couple hours before going into offline mode), and the sites would be there to take files out of and to move around. I've done some searching and wasn't able to find anything, hopefully someone has a suggestion :)

  • Specific OS X Leopard questions?

This is NOT an attack on OS X, I love Tiger and am simply wondering if some minor annoyances have been changed in Leopard.

    1. Do minimized windows' labels update even while you're holding your mouse over them? Eg. if you hover on your minimized "Downloads" window for a couple seconds, will the % complete label change as you're watching?

    2. Do minimized windows' thumbnails update themselves as the window changes?

    3. Do you still have to "eject" external storage before removing it from the computer?

    4. Do some folders still get all jumbled up once in a while, with folders/files stacking on top of each other and losing their grid layout?

    5. Is there a standard key that will let you minimize full-screen apps? (There could be a trick available to do that in Tiger already, if so please let me know)

If you use Leopard and can answer even one, please do :)

  • How can I create icon files from OSX folders with the icons embedded in them?

When I download icons for OS X from iconfactory, instead of being icon files they are folders that have icons set to them. You're supposed to copy the icon from the "Get Info" pane, and set them to other folders by pasting them in the "Get Info" pane. I want the icons to be actual .icns files. Does anyone know how to access them?

  • DMG files on external hard drive don't show up?

I downloaded a few .dmg files and put them on my external hard drive to transfer them to my Mac, but none of them are showing up. I don't know of any kind of hidden files/folders in OS X, but could that be the problem? Everything else on my hard drive is there and works fine. Suggestions?

  • Firefox's icons changed colors, what happened?

I'm running Firefox in Vista Home Basic and ever since the release of 3.0 all of my icons have been blue (back/forward, refresh, stop, and home). I updated to 3.0.1 quite a while ago, as soon as it was released, and it didn't change the icons. Sometime today, my icons changed. Back/forward is green, refresh is blue, stop is red, home has a yellow roof, and all the other icons have been tweaked slightly. I haven't installed any addons today, has anyone heard of this happening before, or know why it happened?

  • What is "cloud 11"?

Wikipedia and 3-4 dictionary sites aren't giving me the info. Cloud 11 is referenced in Superstar II by Saliva and I've seen it in a few other places through Google, but no definition.

  • Why are Macs seen as "educational" platforms?

Why are Macs popular as educational platforms if most people do/will (unfortunately) use Windows outside of school? I don't want answers explaining why Mac computers are better, I already believe they are. However, I'm curious as to why the schools would pay MORE to get Macs, when most people will never even use one outside of school.
