  • If you were the last man on earth, would you attempt to repopulate the earth or let the human race die out?

Earth has experienced some catastrophic disaster. You, and a member of the opposite sex, are the only remaining humans. Pretend, even if your not, that you are straight and physically attracted to this member of the opposite sex, and that person attracted to you. Would you attempt to repopulate the Earth or let the human species die out either by practicing abstinence or using birth control. In movies it always seems that any survivors immediately try to rebuild civilization but sometimes I wonder if maybe it would be better just to live out your natural life and then let the human species fade out of existence.

  • Why do banks charge an overdraft fund fee?

\Why do banks charge you a $30+ fee when you have insufficient funds? Is there a better answer other than because "they can." Let's say you opt-out of their overdraft coverage so you don't get your good or service when you have insufficient funds. You use your debit card so the cost for them rejecting the charge is near $0.00 (There only cost would be personnel cost.) So why do American banks charge such large overdraft fees when it costs them near 0 and you gain no service from it?

  • Is not using the correct gender for words offensive in other languages?

So in English we have gendered pronouns (he or she, etc.) but for the most part our language is not gendered but if you use the wrong pronouns, even by accident, it's considered very offensive. The term "friend" is the same for both male and female friends. In other languages though, sometimes even these words are gendered such as "ami" (or amie if the friend is female) in French. So if you call a female friend "ami" or a male friend "amie" would it be considered offensive? What about in other languages and cultures?

  • How do conservatives view intersexed people?

It's been commonly thought that gender identity and biological sex fell into two distinct group (male and female) Now many conservatives believe that people who are transgendered (biological sex does not match gender identity) are simply "confused" but what is the (socially) conservative opinion on "intersexed" individuals. These are individuals born with "Disorders of Sexual Development" or DSD's. Their genitalia simply doesn't match up with our definitions of male and female. They may have unusual X and Y chromosomes from their apparent sex. In the past we may have called them (hermaphrodites but this word is plagued with centuries of unscientific baggage.) Some has estimated that people who have DSD's of some sort could be as many as 1 in 50. My questions is how do social conservatives view intersex people and how do they maintain the traditional Male-Female gender identity/biological sex dichotomy in light of this physical evidence?

  • Does being good at speaking your native language indicate that it should easier to learn another language?

Say for example, you have two native English speakers. The first, his name is Bob, is a very good linguist. But Fred, his best friend, has trouble with English although he is also a native speaker. S Imply put, Bob is in every way more skilled at English. He has better grammar, better vocabulary and is more creative with how he uses words. The question is, would Bob have an advantage in trying to learn another language, like Spanish? I'm not asking if he absolutely would learn Spanish better but is a person justified in the assumption that Bob would like be better able to learn another language?

  • Why do people study business as a major?

The pay isn't any better out of college than many liberal arts degrees, employers don't show a preference towards business majors by and large, business majors tend to learn less actual skills than liberal arts majors and the subject doesn't intrigue most business majors I know. So why do people become business majors? Is it because they think that becoming a business major will make them a lot of money?

  • How do I get my roommate to stop smoking in the apartment?

My roommate smoke around the house despite the fact I've asked him not to even before we moved in. Then once it got cold for a bit and he didn't want to go outside to smoke so I was fine with it once but now he almost always smokes inside. What can I do?

  • Can Melatonin cause you to sleep less?

I usually sleep slightly over 8 hours a night and I'm a 19 year old male in college. Since I've been taking melatonin I've been sleeping about 5 hours a night and been feeling fully rested from this. I also have the other more common benefit of sleep regulation, easier to fall asleep, etc. I cannot however find an example of people sleeping less on it than before. Is this normal?

  • What should a writer do if he is constantly being misinterpreted?

So in this Creative Writing course about a third of the people get what I'm saying, a third thinks something else and another third thinks something even more out there at least in regard to my poetry I had to submit. Should I be more clear? Or are all writers misinterpreted so often? I used to believe in "The Death of the Writer" where my interpretation of my work is no more accurate than any other opinion but now I'm starting to doubt that... How can there simply be no wrong interpretations???

  • What suggestions do you have about buying a portable oven?

So my apartment does not have an oven (just a range) I was wondering what I need to know and look for when buying a portable oven. How do I measure how powerful a portable oven is? I cook fairly often so I want something fairly strong (Can easily do pizza, stromboli, chicken parmesian etc...) Is there any portable oven out there that can take on a turkey?

  • What is Apple's role in making their products?

Hi. I'm asking what does the company Apple do. I'm not asking what their products do. For example Intel makes many of the parts and most other components are made by other companies. Foxconn and other asian manufacturers assemble the part. All I can figure is that Apple does product design and software design and programming (unless they outsource this as well but I haven't heard about) and of course marketing (Which they admittedly do a really great job at) So what does the company Apple actually do in the making of their products?

  • Should I help my friend pay for breast augmentation for her birthday?

So one of my friend wants to get breast augmentation for her 21st birthday and asked her friends that, in lieu of a present, to send her money for the plastic surgery. The thing is that while she is extremely small she's otherwise very attractive. I mean absolutely beautiful. More attractive than like 99% of women out there and definitely doesn't need it to be appealing and it's not like she looks bad with small breasts. So my question is what should I do? I understand that his is probably more about self confidence than external appearance, but I think this is a roundabout way of becoming more self confident

  • Why doesn't Christianity differentiate between the ethical and ritual commandments of the Old Testament?

By looking online I'm able to find many good articles about the differences between Old Testament "Ethical Commandments" (Thou shall not steal, Thou shall not commit adultery) and the "Ritual Commandments" (Thous shall not wear clothes made of two fabrics, Thou shall not shave your beard) I paraphrased the commandments but you get the point. But all the articles I can find is from Rabbi's be they Reform or Orthodox and none from Christian Scholars so my question is why is there not a differentiation between Ritual Commandments and Ethical Commandments in Christianity?

  • How does Calvinism not break down into hedonism?

With the concept that we are already pre-elected to be saved, no matter what we do, or we are not pre-elected, and therefore will go to Hell, why not do whatever you want? What is the motivation for Calvinists not to be complete and utter hedonists?

This is just a hypothetical... But would Apple hire say an entry level programmer who mainly, for personal use, used Windows or Linux?

  • Can people ever really understand each other?

Hi. I was wondering, given that our "self", the essential "I", is constantly being affected and changed and that we all have many years of our past, with their own set of experiences, is it ever possible to know someone else considering they all have these different experiences becoming their personality?

  • Does God have to obey logic?

Okay so first off don't side track this with debating rather God exists. Let's assume he does... Mkay? Got that now? Let's move on. Assuming he does exist in a relatively Christian form (Omnipotent, Omnibenovelent, Omniscient) what would obligate an all powerful being to obey the laws of logic? What would stop him from say creating a stone so large he couldn't lift it (then lifting it)? Or creating a four sided triangle just for fun? This is honestly a serious question. Why couldn't an omnipotent being do the logically impossible?

  • What would happen if a monarch tried to seize power?

Hi. I'm an American so please forgive this question if it sounds ridiculous. I figured the best place to ask was here. What would happen if after Queen Elizabeth II leaves the throne a monarch came into power that tried to get as much power as possible? It seems absolutely incredible to me that the monarch doesn't get in the way of the civil government. Does the monarchy simply not have power because Queen Elizabeth chooses not to use it or could that power actually be utilized?

  • First date on Valentines Day. What's your advice?

Okay first date on Valentines Day. I'm a 19 year old freshman male going to my local state college. Going to a Shabu-Shabu Japanese Restaurant with a girl I met at the beginning of the semester and haven't really talked to her since. What should I wear? Should I give her flowers or candy since it's Valentines Day or is that too much for a first date? Thanks.
