  • How do you find the volume of a sphere using the shell method?

    I don't know how to answer this question and I would like some help. However, a viable answer is not "use the washer method" because the whole point of this is to use the shell method. I'm just confused as to where to start and how to progress through the problem. Can some one help me with this?

  • Inner classes in Java question. How would you write this code?

    Let's say you have a class called Problem. If you wanted to write an inner class to test Problem called TestProblem, how would you do that? Could you do something like:

    class Problem

    {

    /**stuff**/

    }

    class TestProblem

    {

    /**main method**/

    }

    or would you have to put TestProblem inside of Problem, like:

    class Problem

    {

    /** stuff**/

    class TestProblem

    {

    /**main method**/

    }

    }

    Also, would the second instance require that TestProblem is static? I don't think TestProblem can be static in the first instance.

    Any help would be nice!

  • Does anyone know of a Mary-Sue story with this theme?

    I want to find a few stories with Mary-Sues in them where the Mary-Sue dies, but then is resurrected (somehow) and gains a power because of this (or powers up more because of it). They can be published works or fanfictions, but since I assume more will be fanfictions, I'm not particularly sure where I should ask this question...

    I know some exist (mostly in the DBZ community) but as I was going through some of my links, I noted that most were broken and I couldn't find them anymore. They can have any rating, all that I ask is that if you know of one like it, please put a link here.

    I don't know who'll get the ten points... I guess the person who can find the WORST POSSIBLE one can have ten points for actually reading it before sending it to me.

  • Can someone explain Optimization in Calculus?

    Before you answer this question, please note that if I understand the concept of optimization, then I won't need you to actually do the problem I'm posting. If it's easier for you to explain while answering, that's alright too, but I really need to understand the steps of optimization.

    What I don't understand is how to determine the maximum or minimum area/perimeter/volume of a figure and how to determine the area/perimeter/volume of certain figures as a one variable function and then solve that function from there. I can only think of one good example, so I'll update later if I think of another one.

    1) Consider a fence 80 meters long. Suppose you are building a rectangular garden with a missing side. Determine the maximum size garden you can construct.

    The first thing I did was sketch a diagram. Then, I wrote down all that I knew, namely that the perimeter is 80m, and the formula for this is 2l + w = P (or 2w + l = P).

    Then I was asked to determine the area as a one variable function. Since:

    area = A = lw

    and:

    P =80 = 2l + w

    I said that:

    l = 40 - (w/2)

    Therefore:

    A = 40w - ([w^2]/2)

    If all of this is correct, how do you find the maximum area? How would you find the minimum area?

  • Can someone explain time complexities, run time complexity, or Big-O notation?

    I don't understand Big-O notation, which is probably why I don't understand either run time complexity or time complexity. I know the formula, but somehow that's not helping me very much and even reading my math book and asking around campus hasn't been helping me. So I turn to you, internet-- can anyone help me understand Big-O and time complexity on a basic level?

  • I'm making a costume and I need to figure out how to make a tail... Suggestions?

    I'm making a costume, and I want to make a tail that is proportional (and not one of those tiny ones that they sell at Anime conventions). Does anyone have any suggestions on how to create that?

  • Problems with my external monitor: Why do (most of) my applications freeze?

    I have a laptop and one external monitor.

    I want to be able to play Stepmania, for example, on the external monitor. But the problem is that any game that runs on the external monitor doesn't work. And this doesn't just apply to Stepmania-- most all of the applications that I would rather run on that screen just don't work. This includes media players, emulators, sometimes even folders won't load on that monitor. But if I drag that not working component from the external monitor to the laptop screen, it works.

    By, "doesn't work", I mean that the application "doesn't appear"-- If I drag the window for like, VLC media player to my second monitor, the screen for the VLC player goes completely black and freezes. Or if I drag Stepmania over, the window is frozen-- but I can still scroll through songs. I just don't see the animation for the scrolling. I hear the noise, though, and it's not lagging or anything. The screen is just frozen. Not the entire screen, just applications screen. If I run Pidgin, which works on both screens, and Stepmania together, I can still talk to my friends on the external monitor while the game is not working. Also, anything that is on my laptop's screen works well.

    Any application, except for the internet, Eclipse, Pidgin, and like... notepad (and things of that ilk), that I bring to the external monitor will freeze and though it will still be running, I can't see it because of the whole freezing part.

    If anyone understands this, can you explain what's wrong and some solutions?

  • I can't use my X Server. Can someone tell me how to correctly configure XMing?

    I want to run XMing, the Windows X Server, but I can't get it to work with my current PuTTY and SSH Secure Shell.

    So, I wanted to ask how get it to work... Of course, I can tell you what I have done so far.

    In PuTTY:

    Connection>SSH>X11

    I have enabled X11 Fowarding and pressed the radio button for MIT-Magic-Cookie-1

    In SSH Secure Shell:

    Profile Settings> Connection > Tunneling

    I tunneled X11 connections.

    I'm pretty sure that's all I have to do, but XMing isn't working (and yes, I am running the X11 server when I try to use it, haha!). Anyway, if there's any help that you guys can suggest outside of like, "Switch to Linux" or "Get a Mac", then I would be much obliged to hear it!

    Thanks!

  • My computer's performance suddenly has gotten erratic, can anyone explain this to me?

    I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 that runs Vista with the newest version of MS Office. I use Firefox as a browser usually, although right now I'm trying out Google Chrome, just to see if I'll like it. I run ZoneAlarm in the background at all times, except when I'm playing a game like Stepmania or something.

    My CPU usage is usually around like 20-33%, and it fluxes a lot... like, way more than I think is necessary, but usually between that range. However, every few minutes it will jump to like 100%, and I'm like, "What is going on here?"

    I know that CPU and RAM usage can both be misleading, but the performance is so random and usually when it starts up, I open up the task manager and the first thing I see is the CPU straining to keep up with me doing absolutely nothing. >: Which reminds me, Google Chrome and FireFox both use a godawful amount of memory, o_0

    Anyway, this change was so random that it threw me. I don't know what I did-- because I must have done something-- to cause my computer to act so strangely. I thought at first that Vista was trying to handle things in a very ridiculous way, but then I figured that I was just trying to rationalize my computer's terrible performance and blame it on something else.

    But before I go ask Microsoft anything, I figured I would ask on here to see if anyone else can help me. I'll add information if it's needed, I just would like some help figuring out what's going on.

  • My laptop's fan is loud and sometimes annoying... How do I make it run a little quieter?

    I got my laptop last Christmas and it worked decent enough, considering that I use it for just about everything now. But the fan has become really noisy for some reason, and I don't understand it. Anyway, sometimes it sounds like a plane coming off of a runway-- really loud and annoying and so embarrassing when I'm supposed to be doing classwork. Other times it makes this weird sort of whirring sound. I don't really know how to explain it other than saying that it's quieter, but annoying.

    I have a Dell Inspiron 1525. I don't normally hear complaints about the fan being retarded, but I looked it up a couple minutes ago and the first link was some guy complaining about the fan. However, no one has said anything about FIXING it yet, outside of "Get rid of that laptop and buy another one", which really isn't a solution, when you think about it.

    I am under the impression that I can fix this issue by changing some settings in Vista, which I guess could be the problem-- but I've also been told to clean my fan. And I've been told to just scrap the fan and replace it with a quieter one.

    So I guess my real question is, if I can fix the problem via some settings in Vista, then what settings do I change?

  • Lightening African American hair?

    So, I'm African American, and I want to lighten my hair. Well... I want to dye it, really. I need it to be white for a costume that I'm doing. I don't know if that's dyeing or lightening... probably the latter. Anyway, my hair isn't relaxed, it's natural, but it's been relaxed before. My hair is also breaking a little bit at the ends, but I am planning on getting my hair trimmed.

    I'm pretty sure it's relatively safe for me to lighten my hair, because I'm not putting any chemicals in my hair really. But I want to also get my hair straightened at the same time. Is that safe or not?

    Also, after I finish with the costume, I don't really want to maintain the color at all... it would look weird (really weird). But I DO want my hair to be healthy throughout the whole shebang. How do I keep my hair healthy?

    I am terrified of dyeing my hair myself. I'm pretty sure I would do something detrimental to my hair. So my next question would be, how much would it cost to get my hair dyed at a salon?

    I'm not sure what I've left out, but if anyone has tips or suggestions for me, then please leave them, I would be happy to hear them.

  • About clipping a hedgehog's nails...?

    I really would like to buy a hedgehog, so I asked around and found a breeder and I'm preparing to buy a hedgehog but... I have no idea how to clip it's nails.

    I understand that it's nails might become worn down if I have a wheel (which I do), but on the off chance that it's nails are long, what's a safe method to clip its nails?

    Also, I realize that there is a blood vessel running through the nail. Is it visible at all?

  • What curry dishes can I make for my vegetarian roommate?

    I live with three other people. One of them is a vegetarian, the rest of us aren't.Recently, I've been wanting to make curry, and the only thing stopping me is making her share.

    More often than not, we cook things that have meat in them, and I've only know a few dishes that don't have meat or like, chicken broth and things like this in the recipe. Usually when we cook, we have to make her a separate dish, which is understandable. However, I don't really have the time on my hands to make two separate curries, and I want to make just one.

    I know a few recipes for curry, but none that are vegetarian. Actually, that's a lie... I know one curry recipe that's vegetarian, but it's honestly the most foul thing I've ever tasted, and I wouldn't subject my roommates to that.

    Are there any curry recipes out there that don't taste really bad?

  • What can I do for him?

    This guy I recently started talking to always makes a point of talking about how down he is, and how he's looking for the perfect girl. I don't think we've had one conversation where this topic hasn't come up. We've been talking for a while now, and in order for me to talk with him I must be increasingly optimistic. He's very shy.

    Although I feel bad for him, I feel like maybe if I could do something for him, then he'll come out of his shell... but all he ever tells me about is how he wants a girlfriend. What am I supposed to do?

  • Why do people believe that they are vampires and so forth?

    Before anyone uses this as a response, yes, I do understand that some people do it for attention.

    But there are people who do things for attention, and then there are people who really do believe that they've lived for a hundred and four years. It doesn't make sense to me at all. If they have parents, then they can't logically say "Oh, I was actually born fifty to sixty years ago, but they don't know that." Right? Because their parents have been with them since they were born, unless they were adopted or something like that. But that doesn't change the fact that they have biological parents who I'm sure are human. So if there's all this proof racking up against them, why do they continue to insist that they are something that they cannot possibly be?

    It's different from believing in a God, because if it was a God you can't logically prove that it exists. But by definition, we know that unless a body is dead, it cannot be a vampire. So why do people insist that they're vampires?

  • If your bones continuously crack, does that mean you have a calcium deficiency?

    By crack, I don't mean snap... I mean like that popping sound that you can make with your fingers. My friend pointed out to me the other day that my bones seem to crack all the time. Which is true. And it's really gross. xD

    I don't know why I do that, but she thinks it's a calcium deficiency, and I don't. What really is the cause of something weird like this?

  • So should I go for it, or should I do nothing?

    I met this guy before I entered college. He and I got along alright, and then one day decided that we'd try a relationship out. We're very similar in that we're secretive, and don't usually like telling people about our lives (this being a huge exception on my part). In any case, I cracked under pressure and broke up with him, then avoided him for a while. Recently we've started talking a little bit again, but if I'm with my friends, he'll ignore me. He'll ask me to take a nap with him, which I don't mind necessarily, but it's confusing. I don't know what he wants from me. Plus, ever since recently, he's been somewhat ignoring me, which I can't deal with since I'm so full of questions that I need the answers to more than anything else.

    I like him a lot, but I can't help but think that it's more physical than anything else, and that annoys me greatly. At the same time, I do like him a lot, so should I ask him if we should start dating again, or should I do nothing at all?

  • I know what caused the smell in my fridge. How do I get rid of it?

    My roommate got sick earlier this year. Her parents sent her soup, which she put in my fridge. The soup spilled and left a mess, and she cleaned it up, but it still smells. She doesn't know what caused it, but I'm positive it's the spilled soup, since she didn't clean it right away. I've tried cleaning the fridge with two different concoctions: baking soda and water, and vinegar and water. I've also been told to try wiping the fridge down with vanilla and also to put kitty litter inside the fridge to kill the odor. My problem is that a) I don't have a cat and I don't want to buy kitty litter to put into the fridge b) I'm not certain as to whether putting vanilla in the fridge will rid me of the smell, it might just mask it and it'll come back later and c) the fridge even smells when it's off, so I don't know if what I'm doing is working at all.

    I'm positive the soup was the cause of all of this. how do I get rid of the smell?
