Hey everyone, My name is Tyler and I love hunting, fishing, and the great outdoors. I, along with millions of other folks, share a huge interest in firearms and varieties of cartridges. Anything you want to talk about, I will.

  • Williamsport, PA deer hunting?

I will be going to school out in Williamsport, PA this coming fall, and I'm an avid hunter. Being that I won't be able to come home every weekend to hunt, I was wondering what the deer hunting is like in the Williamsport area. I know there are several state forests and a few gamelands, so for anyone who has hunted or does hunt in the area, what would you recommend? Thanks.

  • Fun little hypothetical question here.?

Suppose you could give any cartridge, whether it be rifle or handgun, a "lifetime achievement award" for its excellence. What would it be and why? Also, what cartrdige would you give an "honorable mention" to? Have fun.....

  • .25-06 and a 22" barrel?

I just bought a .25-06 that has a 22" barrel, and I was wondering if it is really that big of a deal that it is 2" shorter than it should be? The deer that I shoot with it are only going to be 100 yards max, and I will use it for varmints too. Also, can I reload my own cartridges, and get it back up to average velocities even in the shorter barrel? I have heard that the slow burning powders are gonna give you the best velocities no matter the barrel length. So, is it really going to affect real world performance?

  • Addociate's Degree and Environmental Bio?

I am graduating from high school next week, and I couldn't be happier. I was never a fan of school or the classroom, so I am planning on going to college for just 2 years instead of 4 years. I want to do something with the environment, and I believe the college calls it environmental biology. So, I was wondering what kinds of outdoor/environmental careers I could get with a 2 year degree? If there aren't many choices out there for that particular field, what other types of careers offer a stable future with a 2 year degree? Thanks.

  • Any hunters have experience with these cartridges?

They're the .30-06 180 grain RN Core-Lokt. I read the websites reviews, just wanted some more personal experience. I usually use 150 grain, and I know that's all that is needed, but why not try these shells. I hunt in PA, and obviously hunting in the woods, my shots average 50-75 yards. Plus, I was thinking that the lower velocity of the 180's would enable the bullet to hold up better than the 150's with the added bonus of more penetration. What do you guys think about these. I've heard nothing but good about 'em. I don't think the deer would know whether it was hit with the pointed version or this version. Thanks.

  • Weatherby Vanguard Sporter?

I am looking into purchasing one of these nice rifles later in the summertime, and I wanted a little input on them. I know they're made in Japan, but I have also heard the Japs are pretty good gun makers. Does anyone have experience with the quality of Weatherby firearms?

  • Experience with the Swift Scirocco?

I might try the 150 grain Swift Scirocco in the .30-06 next year, and I have heard good things about this bullet, particularly it's ability to retain weight even at close range when fired from high velocity cartridges. It's ballistic co-efficient is quite nice too.

  • Am I going to get a legitimate or authentic signature if I do this?

I wanted to send my DVD of "Sherlock Homes" to Robert Downey Jr. for him to autograph it, and if I use the link below, do you think that he is actually going to get this and sign it himself? Or do you think someone else will fake his signature? Thanks.

  • Question about my reticle?

I was at the range today sighting in my Leupold Vari-X II atop my .300 Win. Mag. for deer season. Now I have it right where I want it, which is about 2" high at 50 yards. I got about a 1.5" group, but even though the scope is zeroed in, why does the reticle look crooked when I look through? The scope is in the mounts properly too. I mean obviously it doesn't have an effect on my zero, but shouldn't it be relatively straight up and down when I look through? Just curious, that's all. Thanks.

  • .44 Rem. Mag. barrel life?

I am going to purchase a Ruger Super Redhawk, used for $200. Because of the price of the particular firearm, and the strong reputation of the Redhawks, I can't pass it up. Now the guy I am purchasing it from has had it sitting in his gun safe for 3 years, and he never even put a single round through it. But, he bought it used and was informed by the guy he bought it from that he loved shooting it, and shot it quite a bit. I was wondering how many rounds a revolver like that could tolerate before I would notice decreased accuracy? Also, being that it was shot so much, what signs could I look for in the barrel that could possibly show significant wear ? Also, any input on the Super Redhawk or personal experience would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Coyote Hunting Questions?

Alright, I just got my "Flextone" Game Caller in the mail, and it contains many different animals. But in my state of Pennsylvania, you are only allowed electronic calls for coyotes, bobcats, foxes, and crows. I might take it out this weekend and try it on the wise 'ol coyotes, and was wondering about the most effective way to use it. The call contains the following coyote sounds:

    Coyote Bark

    Coyote Female Challenge

    Male Communicative

    Coyote Pup 3 Weeks Distress

    Coyote Pup Group Howl

    There are also.........

    Cottontail Distress

    Deer Mouse Squeak

    Vole Mouse Squeak

    Also numerous bird distresses

So, any predator hunters out there, what type of pattern would you follow? Or what type of calls should I focus on most? Thanks.

  • Deer rack preparation for mounting?

OK, so I bagged a small buck back in November, and I am now just getting ready to mount it. Usually I just leave the fur on the skull, but this deer had the other antler broken off, and the fur still smells pretty bad. So, I was wandering how to properly boil the rack so that the fur will EASILY peel off if possible. Any other suggestions are also appreciated. Also, if I had to boil the rack, how can I make sure it doesn't turn the antlers white? Thanks.

  • Velocity gain expected?

How much velocity increase can be expected in a .44 Rem.Mag. Handi-Rifle compared to a revolver? The Handi-Rifle has a 22" barrel.

  • Is car mileage a lot to worry about or consider?

I have a 2000 Chrysler LHS, and it has 126,460 miles on it. I don't know much about cars, and I'm just wondering if this will determine how much longer the car will be "driveable" or able to run. The car passes inspection and all that good stuff and has good brakes, but is all that mileage really hurting the engine? Please tell me if I'm appearing paranoid, I just would like a little input on the matter. Thanks.

  • All shooter and hunter opinions wanted?

Today in 2010, we as hunters and shooters are fortunate enough to live in an age with many, many different cartridges. So, let's say that since 1895 all the way up to today, what, in your opinion, are some of the best cartridges to hit the civilian market?

For me I have to tip my hat to both the .30-30 Winchester and the .30-06 Springfield. I have to respect the .30-30 because it was the first smokeless powder rifle cartridge, and it is truly "the little engine that could" (and still can) of the centerfire world. And the .30-06 is of course one of the most versatile rounds in history, and one will always be in my collection. So, give me your input. Thanks.

  • Big game hunters out there, which Ultra Magnum Cartridge would you buy?

Just out of curiosity, would you get one of these monsters if the oppurtunity presented itself? Are you a hunter who appreciates these big boomers, or are you one of the more traditional hunters who would rather stick to the standard classics like the .270, .30-06, .30-30, or .308 just to name a few? I love the classic rounds, but these big boomers would be in my gun cabinet it I could afford it, because they sure can offer an advantage. So, out of the 7mm, .300, .338, and .375 RUM's, which one?

  • Question about Chicago (the band)?

I have grown quite fond of Chicago lately, and I just like the way the band sounds as a whole. But, there were so many members that were multi-tasking. My question is that out of the vocalists, Robert Lamm and Peter Cetara, who sings what songs? New to the band, it's kinda hard for me to distinguish between them. Could someone explain how they determined who would sing lead vocals, and give me a list maybe of what songs Robert sang and what songs Peter sang?

  • Difference between these two Leupold scopes?

On my .30-06, I have a Leupold Vari-X II 3-9X40mm, and it was purchased in 2001. Now, I looked on the Leupold website and it says that the Vari-X II was discontinued in 2001, so I have one of the last models of that particular scope. It says it was replaced by the VX-II. Now is there any real difference between the Vari-X II and the VX-II?

  • Finally getting into reloading now?

Alright, I received some dies for the .300 Win. Mag., bullets, brass, and some IMR 4350 powder. My uncle has the rest of the equipment so I'm ready to go. I am going to purchase a good reloading manual soon, but I have a few questions beforehand.

    1. Are you limited to certain velocities with different powders?

    2. If a bullet does not have a cannelure, is it still important to crimp?

    3. What powders are best suited to the .300 Win Mag?

    4. How important is it to start out with the minimum load and work up? Can't you just select a desired load from the manual and load it?

Thanks in advance, and I WILL be starting out with an experienced reloader so I'll learn the right way.
