Nepeta is a genus of about 250 species of flowering plants in the family Lamiaceae. The members of this group are known as catnip or catmint because of their famed effect on cats—nepeta pleasantly stimulates cats' pheromonic receptors, typically resulting in a temporarily induced euphoric state. Catnip is also known to induce mild euphoria in humans.

Oil isolated from catnip by steam distillation is a repellent against insects, in particular mosquitoes, cockroaches and termites.[3][4] Research suggests that in a test tube, distilled nepetalactone, the active ingredient in catnip, repels mosquitoes ten times more effectively than DEET, the active ingredient in most insect repellents,[5][6] but that it is not as effective a repellent when used on the skin.[7] Additionally, catnip and catnip-laced products designed for use with domesticated cats are available to consumers.

Effects on cats

Catnip and catmints are mainly known for the behavioral effects they have on cats, particularly domestic cats.[8] When cats sense the bruised leaves or stems of catnip, they may roll over it, paw at it, chew it, lick it, leap about and purr, often salivating copiously. Some cats will also growl, meow, scratch and/or bite the hand that is holding it. This reaction only lasts for about ten minutes before the cat loses interest. It takes up to two hours for the cat to "reset" after which it can come back to the catnip and have the same response as before.[9] Young kittens and older cats are less likely to react to catnip.

Approximately two thirds of cats are susceptible to the behavioral effects of catnip. The phenomenon is hereditary; for example, most cats in Australia are not susceptible to catnip, since Australian cats are drawn from a relatively closed genetic pool.[10] It elicits such a response in only some cats, because a genetic element is involved that is enriched in domesticated breeds. There is some disagreement about the susceptibility of lions and tigers to catnip. Some claim that the way lions and domestic cats react to catnip suggest further evidence of the genetic existence of a susceptibility to catnip outside of domestic felines.[10]

Catnip contains nepetalactone, a terpene. Nepetalactone can be extracted from catnip using steam distillation.[11] Cats detect it through their olfactory epithelium and not through their vomeronasal organ.[12] At the olfactory epithelium, the nepetalactone binds to one or more olfactory receptors where it probably mimics a cat pheromone, such as the hypothetical feline facial pheromone or the cat urine odorant MMB.

my father was in the slow lane on a three lane road when a 19 yr old driver struck the car passing my dad. her right side of the car went down the right side of this car and hitting dads and my step mother head on and killing them both. she had some injuries but will recover and i'am glad she will be ok but i am so mad at her for driving so fast that she crossed the center lane and was and came down the slow lane taking my family from me, my kids now have no grandparents, i have no father, he was a great person i love him so much..i miss them both and don't know how to find a way to forgive this girl, i don't know if i even want to, i want her to understand the wonderful people that she killed meant so much to me and my family and she can never give them back, they are gone forever, and i hate her for this, but would like to find away to find some type of peace. how do i do this, or do i even want to?

been in hospital for three days for treatment gall bladder because it is infected , will have surgery on the 2nd, however having surgery for the removal of my thyroid on the 9th, if anyone has had any of these surgeries please let me know what to expect and how long it took to start feeling better after the surgery . any advise will be great

she is a good kid but thelast6 month she has been fallen deeper in to trouble, she stays in trouble at school, she will not do any thing i tell her to do she always talks back to me or just walks off, last week she became violent with me. ihave grounded her from the phone and other things but she does them any way i have looked into brat camps but they are all 13 years and older, what can i do and they are al so expensive I LOVE her very much and i will not loose her to this behavior. she still makes really good grades but she wont even listen to her teachers anymore. if any one has any help for me please let me know, its all out of hand. my 14 yr old son is getting stressed out by all of this, its not fair to him

i have a bengal cat (5 month old kitten) he always has his claws out when he walks, you can hear then "clicking" on the wood floors, however he is always hung up in the carpet and furniture i have to help him get free if i don't he flops around and iam afraid that he will hurt himself, i keep his nails trimmed but it still happens........all the time i called the breeder that i got him from and she says this is typical of the breed , does any one else have this problem, and any suggestions ?

just set ot some Plum bushes this year and a really cold spell came and killed all the leaves off of them, and almost all of the leaves are brown, do i have to dig them up or will they get new leaves?

why is it that our Government only tells us what they want us to know? look at the things that they have kept a secret from us in the past and that just what other agencies have brought fourth for the public. Agent Orange used in Vietnam , they knew what the side effects were on our soldiers but yet they kept using it. cleaning up the twin towers they knew that this going to have some very bad side effects of breathing in the dust that was contaminated with deadly chemicals, but yet they said nothing. and the list goes on and on, why does our government feel that it is not necessary to protect our own but they go in other countries" to make this a better and safer world"

what are the chances of the Melamine that is found int the fertilizer of the wheat and rice proteins getting in to human foods? Del Monte food , Nestle and Colgate are all companies that produce foods for human consumption also, is their any data that provides use with reassurances that our food is safe. ?

and about 2 foot is pushing outward about 6inches from the bottom, what can be done and why is it doing this?

some people thinkthat these are the only dogs that should be allowed to reproduce, and this bothers me. if everyone had their lesser dogs "fixed" then only the rich could afford to buy a puppy. i love my mix breed dog shes great. and really dont see anything wrong with being a mix breed. I do have all my animals "fixed" but i was just wondering what would happened if everyone else did , would we all have the pets that we love so much? and please dont preach to me about the benifits of having your pets fixed, i already know about them i have worked in a vet clinic for about 10 years and all my animals are "FIXED" except my horse. they are someplaces that have a shotage for dogs and are having them transported from other areas.

when some one asks a question about on of these topic there is always angery answers ,like" how would you like your ears cut off" or "how would you like your Fingers cut off" " leave it alone thats the way nature intended them" but when a question come up about breeding a dog or a cat people become angery in their answers by saying a good pet owners has their pets spayed and neutered( which i have all my pets done ) but what if you had a question about spaying or neutering a pet and people replied with these same answers" would you like your b_lls cut off " or " leave them alone thats the way nature intended them? i guess what iam saying is there are a lot of people that think that spaying and neurtering is also cruel but that does not mean that people that has it done does not love or take good care of there pets. (just means they made a choice) once again i have all my pets spayed and neurtered , and thats my choice
