How many holidays am I entitled to?
I started an apprenticeship which involved going to college for several weeks throughout the year. During these times, I am still employed by the company and it counts as 'work' so should be considered as working hours/days.
Throughout the course I have been told that I had 20 days holiday, minus three for Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. I never really questioned it until this point but it is very low. I have looked in my employment contract and it states the following about annual leave.
- You will be entitled to the following:
- 8 days statutory holiday to cover the following holidays: Christmas Day, Boxing Day, May Day, New Years Day etc. etc.
- 25 days paid holiday.
What I am assuming, is that they take the 8 days from the 25 day total, giving me an actual total of 17. But surely if it states it like this in my contract, then I should have those 8 days on top of the 25 paid holiday?
This isn't really my forte, so could somebody help me with this?
By the way I live in the UK.
3 AnswersLaw & Ethics8 years agoTax evasion questions?
Hi,
Everybody hates tax evasion, especially when massive companies such as Apple, Google and Amazon are all found to be evading paying our tax one way or another. I just have a few questions about the conditions that companies have to fulfill and how they manage to get away with basically cheating the system.
What tax are companies supposed to pay in the UK? Is it to do with which country their headquarters is based as to which country's tax they pay? I mean, surely they cannot pay the tax on every single company they ship to/operate in for every single sale?
So for example, Google was in the news recently about tax evasion because they have based their HQ in Ireland rather than England. In doing this, does this mean they just have pay Ireland's tax rates? Why is it such an issue that they're working out of Ireland?
Thanks in advance
5 AnswersUnited Kingdom8 years agoPython Programming Question?
I posted a question on here yesterday about Python programming and it seems I'm stuck again!
C'est la vie.
I'm having trouble with this book- it's not so much of a problem as it is an inquiry. Basically, the book tells me that when I include use this code: print("\a") the computer will sound the system bell. However instead of hearing a system bell all I'm getting is a large dot appearing on the screen.
1 AnswerProgramming & Design8 years agoNeed some help learning to program with Python?
Hi I'm currently learning to code in Python and I'm having an problem when running a pretty simple Game Over program, meant to just display the words "Game Over".
Rather than just typing in "Game Over", though I've actually drawn the words using different symbols.
I've attached links showing screenshots of the source code and the program that is running- if someone can see where I've gone wrong so that I can amend it please let me know.
Thanks a lot!
2 AnswersProgramming & Design8 years agoIT support apprenticeship advice?
Hi,
I'm starting an apprenticeship in IT support for a book publishing company at the end of February, my knowledge in this area of IT is pretty limited. Is there anything I need to know before going in to the job; i.e. terminology, common faults etc.
Any help would be great.
Thanks.
3 AnswersOther - Careers & Employment8 years agoHow much would it cost to bring this in to the UK from the USA?
I'm looking in to buying my Dad a specific watch for Christmas. It works out at roughly £200 including postage. Ideally I wanted to buy it from the UK, but the only one I could find is on eBay; and it's in the states.
Does anybody have any experience ordering from the states? And if so do you have any idea how much the duty/VAT charge would be for bringing it in?
Thanks a lot.
4 AnswersPacking & Preparation9 years agoNeed help using PHP with HTML?
Hi there, I'm currently learning how to use PHP as a server side language, but the book I'm learning from doesn't specify where to put the PHP code. Should I put it in the same file with the HTML code? Or do I put it in to another file and link it some way. If so, what format is the new file in?
Thanks
3 AnswersProgramming & Design9 years agoEducational Job Provider?
Right, I applied for a job where you learn while you train about a week ago. I got a call back today and I was told that first of all I would be given an online course (it's a web design job btw), and then they would try to find me a 4 week job placement around my area; after which, the company I am with could either decide to keep me on or send me on my way. If they sent me on my way then the providers of the course would help me find another full time job. However at the end of the call he told me that it had a cost... £2995. Now I could either pay this sum up front or pay £295 up front and pay the rest monthly, after I have been in full time employment for 6 months and am earning £20k per annum. Thing is, the next group starts on Monday, and they want the money before then.
I was born a sceptic and am still one today. I just don't know if they're trying to scam me. Thing is this really is the industry I want to join and learn about, however £295 is a lot of money to come up with by next week.
The job provider is called CPC learning. Has anyone heard of them?
2 AnswersOther - Careers & Employment9 years agoHow can I get my dog to trust me again?
I have a 8-month-old welsh collie (sort of like a collie crossed with a whippet), and she has always been very skittish and afraid of strange people and dogs alike. Any loud noises or anything like that will have her shying back to her bed. However ever since I picked her up when she was 10 weeks old she has always trusted me. Although when I first met her she was very scared and hid in the corner.
I have been trying to trim her claws recently and every time I try she runs off, and if I hold her down she will wriggle free.
Anyway, I got somebody to help me and did a few claws, but on one claw she yelped badly and ran off. I'm sure I didn't cut too deep I think she just got too nervous. Ever since though she hasn't listened to me as readily. She NEVER does 'paw' any more and if I ask her she scurries away to her bed. I don't comfort her in these situations as I don't want to reinforce the behaviour.
I don't want to take her to a professional, as she has a tendency to nip strangers and bare her teeth when they try to touch her (only when cornered or held down). Even when I am out walking her she barks at strangers and won't get too close. If they come too close she will bolt; and she is FAST.
Anyway I'm just trying to look for a solution to this problem that she has had since weaning. She is too nervous. I don't want her to end up biting someone and being put down- because she is a good dog, just very nervous.
I don't have much money and I can't pay for a trainer or behaviourist or anything like that. If anybody has had any experience dealing with this sort of thing and have managed to stomp it out please let me know. Any help is fantastic. I have owned a dog before and she was extremely well behaved and sociable. I get the impression however that my new dog must have been the runt or something like that.
Thanks for reading and I appreciate any help or experience that you can pass on to me.

3 AnswersProgramming & Design9 years agoIs the MatchDay thing on FIFA 13 demo supposed to update all the time?
The MatchDay thing on my FIFA 13 demo hasn't updated since I downloaded the demo- is it supposed to do it more often or is this the same for everybody? Another thing, EA Sports said that they were going to add Santi Cazorla to Arsenal in the game but he still isn't there for me- just want to know if anyone else has had him and I have to download an update or something that I've missed. Thanks.
1 AnswerVideo & Online Games9 years agoWhat are the main car service garages in Australia?
Hi, I live in the UK but was looking in to emigrating to Australia. I currently work in a service centre and I was wandering what the big car service garages in Australia were? Just to have a look at their websites and see if there's any work in a trade I already know.
Thanks
1 AnswerMaintenance & Repairs9 years agoAMERICANS! Where did you get the idea that us English drink warm beer?
I've seen it on a few different comedies now where the American characters have gone to England on holiday and they go to a pub and drink warm beer? Just want to be the one to say that warm beer is rancid. Tastes like dog's piss. I never seek to- nor do I know anyone that seeks to drink warm beer purposely. Colder the better.
Rant over. Thanks.
11 AnswersOther - Cultures & Groups9 years agoIf there is a car parked on double yellow lines and you crash in to it, who is at fault?
Well I see a lot of people parking on the double yellow lines around a blind corner across the road from where I worked. I was just wandering if someone were to crash in to one of those cars when coming around that blind corner, would the driver be at fault? Or the person who parked their car illegally?
9 AnswersSafety9 years agoLooking to do a European football tour?
Thinking of doing a football tour with a friend of mine to all the top european football clubs (barca, madrid, ac, inter etc.). I was just wandering if anyone knew of any companies that specialise in flight/tickets/accommodation packages? I know I can set it all up separately and everything but I'd rather if I can get it all in one package. Any help would be great. Cheers :)
2 AnswersOther - Soccer9 years agoIf you buy something from ebay does it automatically charge your paypal account?
I want to buy a set of wheels from ebay and I have agreed with the owner of the wheels that, if I win the auction I could come and collect the wheels and pay cash rather than pay for the postage and packaging and pay of my paypal. However the preferred method of payment on the auction IS paypal. I was wandering if it would automatically charge the full amount to my paypal (including the postage and packaging) when the auction is over if I win?
2 AnswersCredit10 years agoJust bought a used car?
Just bought a used car and it has no tax on it. I managed to get it home without issue, but now I need to get it taxed. Is there any way to do that immediately (without having to wait for the insurance paperwork to come through or for the logbook to be posted)?
I tried to do it online but you're not supposed to do it without the logbook because they may send the tax disc to the old owner because the new owners address (in this case me) may not have been updated on the DVLA.
Any help would be great :)
If this can be done online without the need to have the logbook or insurance paperwork please send me links :) Thanks.
