  • Do I have the right to deny service to a customer who continually says racist remarks about me?

I took on a second job just a few months ago to make a bit of extra money. I work as a server in a dining hall sort of thing in a retirement home in Maryland. Most of the old folks are very nice to me and I get along with my coworkers for the most part.

However, there is one resident in there who has said some pretty mean things about me (within earshot- so I have heard these things first hand).

Just last week- she pulled one of my other coworkers aside and asked him "who is that working here- I'm not sure if he speaks English". This was after she spoke to me about what vegetables she wanted- and I have had conversations with her before about school. Later on in the service, she pulled another resident aside and had a full conversation about how "these people" (Asian people?) just look scary and why they shouldn't hire people like us. All this happened within earshot of where I was standing, and they were stealing quick glances at me while having this conversation.

I could maybe let these things go if this person was a person going senile- or just losing her mind. But I really don't think so- she seems otherwise to be all there mentally.

I've held my tongue about this for a while now- but it is starting to bother me. I am thinking about bringing this up with the person who is directly my boss. However, I don't think that they would do much because these folks pay a lot of money to be there and I'm not even sure what my boss can do. Tell them not to say these things?

The only thing I can think to do is not serve them- do I have any kind of legal right to do this? Or do I just have to take the verbal racism?

  • Keyboard not accepting any inputs- mobo may have gone bad?

Hey folks- I need your expertise.

I built my pc about 5 years ago (so I guess ancient now). It had been running all the software I needed to run without any problems- up until very recently.

My PC is no longer taking in any keyboard inputs. I had a dual OS setup (ubuntu & windows 7 with GRUB bootloader). I first noticed that when I tried to enter my windows OS the keyboard & mouse wasnt taking in any input when I tired to enter my password for the login.

I initially thought it was just something up with the windows side of my computer because the ubuntu side still worked fine. However, then the keyboard stopped taking in commands in the GRUB bootloader. So I could not enter in either OS.

Then I decided that maybe I should just do a fresh install- so I tried to put in the windows OS dvd and boot from the dvd. however When I get to the screen that says "press any key to load from the CD..." the keyboard was not working.

I then noticed that the keyboard was not working in the BIOS either. I have a AUSUS motherboard- so the keyboard works up to the splash screen and I am able to enter the BIOS but in the BIOS itself the keyboard does nothing.

I've tried using different keyboards- plugging it in to the different USB inputs on my computer. I still have the same problem. The only thing that I have not tried is using a P2P connection keyboard (simply because I do not have one).

However I fear that my motherboard itself may have gone bad? Does anybody have any idea what could be going on?

  • Screen is blank after fortemanager installation (Windows 8)?

I have a LG monitor. I have been using windows 8 for several months now and just decided that I might as well install the Fortemanager (that is the software from LG that controls the different settings of the monitor).

This seems to have screwed up my PC. When I tried to boot into windows- it starts up, goes through the scroling windows logo thing, and then just flashes. I can see the flashes of the mouse pointer icon. Then nothing else, just goes dark.

I am able to boot into the linux side of things- from there I can edit files or whatnot- but I am not sure what the best way to approach this problem. So far I've googled how to boot into safe mode- I've read you hold down Shift key + F8. That didnt do anything for me.

    Please help?

  • I want to try out a new linux distribution?

I've used ubuntu for a while and I think I'm now pretty comfortable with it. I am can use the bash console to do simple things like using grep and running c++ programs on it. I am an engineering student so I found it very useful for things like developing website, I am learning how to use python. The main thing it lacked for me was Matlab (Im not sure if you could run it with wine).

I want to explore a different distro of linux, maybe one that is more aimed for me? I read that ubuntu is the most popular distribution because it is meant for a wider base- but is there a better distribution for my needs? Please give me suggestions

  • I just got a new Ti-Nspire, I need help...?

using the applications. I am not very good with it yet, I'm used to the 83 plus. But anyways I do not yet see like a applications thing. I mean I've figured out the calculus and linear algebra stuff. I thought it would have some engineering applications though. Like on the Ti-89 I saw some stuff with like rankine cycles and other thermodynamics apps. Is there not similar things with the N-spire? Can I download it?

  • how to determine a thickness of a conductive material?

How do you measure what the thickness of a conductive material has to be. Like say I need concrete to absorb 5,700 KJ of heat. I know that the thermal conductance of concrete is about 1.4 (W/ meter * kelvin). This is based on a temperature increase of 10 kelvin. I think that the answer may come out to 24 cm, but I do not know how to get to that.

When I tried to do it, I tried to apply the thermal conductivity equation where Q= [-K*A(T2-T1)]/L . But I do not have the area here. Can someone please help me out

  • what is the meaning behind the song "dont stop believing"?

this may be my favorite song ever (and not because it was on glee, i was obsessed with it before it was on that show). I feel like I can relate to it, I try to apply it to so many things in my life, like for example before every exam I write "dont stop believing" in the corner of the paper.

I wanted to know what the lyrics to the song means exactly? not just people's interpretation of it, but what the actual song writer was trying to convey. I know obviously its about two people meeting each other through fate and falling in love, but is there a deeper meaning to it?

  • problems dual booting windows7 and ubuntu?

For a while i had my computer set up so it would dual boot vista and ubuntu. I think i installed windows first then ubuntu and grub was automatically set up so I was allowed to dual boot into either one of the OS just fine. However, now that I got windows 7, setting up a dual boot is giving me a lot of problems.

I first tried to just partition another drive on my HD and install windows 7, but that got rid of grub and set up a windows boot loader. Naturally, it no longer recoginzed linux, and I was only able to boot either into vista or windows 7. I looked on online forms and fiddled around with trying to get grub back for hours, but it just didn't work out. So I formatted my whole hard drive.

First I installed window7 then i installed ubuntu. I got Grub back, and it lists windows7, but I cannot boot into it. Can someone please help me?
