  • Free refills at Starbucks?

I know that Starbucks rewards allows you to get free refills on brewed coffee or tea during the same visit. Does this include flavors? For example, if I pay the 50 cents to add a shot of flavor to my coffee, will I just receive plain coffee on my refill and have to pay another 50 cents for the flavor? Or if you originally paid for an upgrade to a drink, will you receive that again?

  • All-vegetable shortening?

I'm making an apple pie, and the recipe calls for part butter and part "all-vegetable shortening." I'm assuming this is solid, so can I put vegetable oil in the fridge so it solidifies, and use that?

  • Filling in the gap of a partial wall?

We divided the living room of our rented apartment with a temporary wall, to create an additional bedroom. Our building allowed this, provided that there was a gap between the wall and the ceiling. We are looking for creative ways to fill this gap to give my roommate more privacy.

Her room contains the only window that once existed in the living room, so putting something opaque would leave our living room and kitchen with no natural light. However, our primary goal is make her room quieter so that we can use the living room without waking her .

The height of the gap is exactly 1 foot, and the length is just over 12 feet. The wall is about 6 inches deep (though not very soundproof because one side is a bookshelf).

Any ideas for how we can fill this gap? We are trying to keep the cost low, because we do not own this unit.

    Thanks!

  • Help with USB C and Thunderbolt ports?

I just got a new Dell laptop, and I failed to do research into the ports before I purchased it. My new computer has the following:

    1 Thunderbolt™ 3 (4 lanes of PCI Express Gen 3) with PowerShare & DC-In

    1 USB-C 3.1 with PowerShare, DC-In & DisplayPort

    1 MicroSD Card Reader

    1 Headset jack

    1 Noble Lock Slot

However, all of my devices (chargers, plug in mouse, external hard drive, etc.) use USB 3 or lower plugs. I m looking into USB C to USB 3 plug converters online, but that still only gives me one port - so I can t, say, use a mouse and charge my phone at the same time. I m trying to figure out if the Thunderbolt port is the same size? It looks similar but I have nothing to plug in to check. Thunderbolt to USB 3 converters seem a lot more expensive than USB C to USB 3 converters.

Anyone have any advice on this? Can I use a USB C to USB 3 converter in the Thunderbolt spot, so I can have more ports? I really don t have to have to look for all new devices just to be able to plug in here!

  • Question about transferring with a MetroCard in NYC?

If I am paying per ride (aka not an unlimited monthly or weekly card), can I transfer between buses going in the opposite direction? Research seems to show that I can t take the bus, do an errand, and then get on the same bus going home, but can I switch to a nearby bus line (within the two hour transfer window?)

Specifically, I m wondering if I can take the M79 eastbound, then take the M86 westbound about an hour later?

  • When do TV competition show winners get their prizes?

Just curious, when someone wins money on Jeopardy, a cooking competition show, whatever, I assume they do not get the prize right away. But I'm wondering if it's always not until after their episode airs? I feel like it would be hard to hide the prize money from people close to you if you had to keep it a secret till it aired!

  • Did not receive signed copy of lease?

We moved into our apartment almost 3 months ago. We signed the lease with a broker about 2 weeks prior to moving in, and were told we would receive a signed copy of it in the mail after we moved in.

We have no unsigned or other copies of it. We have not received anything yet. I contacted the broker about a month and a half ago, and he said he'd contact the management (it's a big building), and then I contacted them directly. Each time, they say they will look into it and it will be here in a few weeks, but still nothing.

I need to sublet my apartment in a few months and don't know how I'm allowed to go about doing that because I don't have a copy of the lease!

They are legally supposed to have provided this in NYC, right? What are the consequences for not providing a signed copy of the lease?

  • Electric heating in NY?

Just moved into an apartment in Manhattan with electric heating, so we are paying for heat. We agreed to this in the lease, but were under the expectation that it wouldn't add *too* much to our electric bill.

We live on the 10th floor of a 22-story building, with windows mostly facing west, and one facing north. It's a 2 bedroom apartment, with a heating/cooling unit in each bedroom, as well as one in the living room. (However, half of the living room has been converted to a bedroom with a partial wall, and the heating unit is in the bedroom portion).

We don't keep the heat on during the day while we are out, mostly during the evening hours and not during the night.

Does anyone have experience with electric heat in NY? What has been the range of your electricity bill for winter months?

    Thanks!

  • How to treat a cut with a flap of skin?

I cut the tip of my thumb while grating potatoes. It was bleeding for a while and I got it to stop by putting pressure on it with a towel. I put a band-aid on it that night, and the next day bought Neosporin to put on with a new band-aid. I have been keeping it covered like this for 2 days. However, there is a flap of skin that hangs a little without the pressure of the band-aid. The bleeding happened under that flap, and if it gets lifted a little, the cut starts to bleed again. How can I help it heal? It's hard to use my thumb because I'm afraid to move that skin, and I'm realizing just how important my thumbs are!

  • How to get rid of Windows 10?

I previously asked this question: /question/index?qid=20160...

My Dell Inspiron 14z laptop, which is about 4.5 years old (purchased spring 2012) was recently converted to Windows 10. I don't love it but don't really mind it too much either, and I've been using it for over a month now I think, but yesterday, my graphics went all funky and my screen is super zoomed in and stretched out and it's quite annoying. I can't figure out how to get it back to normal, and someone suggested uninstalling 10 but I'm not sure how? Also, this seems dumb but I'm not sure which version of Windows I had before? Will it automatically go back to that?

    Thanks in advance!

  • Everything on my PC looks huge and stretched out?

I'm on a Dell laptop, recently converted to Windows 10. I don't think I did anything to change the settings unless it was a button I hit by accident, but my computer screen (the desktop, all browsers, Word, etc.) looks zoomed in and stretched out. I right clicked on the desktop and went to display settings, and it says I'm set at 1024x728 which it lists as normal. Switching to 800x600 made it look even worse and bigger. Is there something I'm missing? Why is everything so huge?!

  • What song is this?

I heard this song on Z100 today, so I'm assuming it was a pretty new song. The lyrics had something to do with the planets and stars. It was a pop song with a female singer. Sorry I don't remember more about it, I was driving so I couldn't look it up right after I heard it. Hopefully someone knows what I'm talking about. Thanks!

  • Is it bad to let bread dough rise for too long?

I'm baking a challah and the recipe says to let the dough rise for one hour in the fridge. Is it bad if I let it rise overnight, as I'm not going to have enough time to prepare the dough and bake it tonight?

    Here is the recipe:

  • Can I store royal icing overnight in a pastry bag?

I made royal icing using egg whites, confectioners sugar, and vanilla extract. It is all in pastry bags but I cannot finish icing all of my cookies tonight. If I store it in the fridge, will it harden overnight, or will I be able to finish tomorrow?

  • What color nail polish should I wear with a navy gown?

I am a bridesmaid in a wedding this weekend, and I am wearing a long, navy dress with silver shoes. What color nail polish do you think I should wear with it? (I'm leaning toward nothing too sparkly, so probably not silver)

If this makes any difference, I have a pale/medium skin tone and dark hair.

  • Target in-store pickup during Black Friday?

I am shopping on Target.com, and the CD I want (which is on sale) is only available for in-store pickup. If I put it on hold for in-store pickup, will the sale still apply? I don't want to have to go into the store during the craziness of Black Friday. Do I pre-pay online, so that I still get the deal now?

  • Are tomato sauce jars heat safe?

I am following a recipe for homemade cranberry sauce, and the last step is

"Transfer to heat-safe jars or containers with lids. Allow sauce to cool at room temperature before refrigerating. Sauce will keep airtight in the refrigerator for at least 2 weeks."

I don't have any canning jars. Can I use a glass cleaned out tomato sauce jar? And should I leave the jar open while cooling, or should I put the lid on?
