Currently in college. I sometimes have no life and sit at home pondering the meaning of life and mysteries of the universe. Not true, but i do like discussing philosophy and religion, though i don't consider myself very smart and often do lots of reading and studying on topics, then analyzing and synthesizing what i've learned into my own view to rehash it out sounding like i came up with it all on my own. I try to be neutral with people, so most of the time if i sound offensive it is most likely a misunderstanding. Don't email me if you're going to be a prick or b---- i'll try to be cordial at first but i have some anger issues. Into psychology, music, philosophy and theology, and other things.

  • Atheists, Is anyone surprised by my last question?

that I stated that theists use false arguments (or misconstrued statements) against evolution, science, etc.... and that some of them actually did just that in answer to my question? I was surprised, just shows I'm not the brightest atheist out of us.

(theists, thank you for confirming your ignorance in my question that was bashing you for it - I am a happy atheist).

Finally!!! i have a reason to post the offers YA gives!

  • Atheists, Theists, and everyone in between, do you use these sources for knowledge?

    Fora.TV

    TED

    Big Ideas

    Dawkins Foundation

if you don't know what they are then you probably don't watch any of these videos or go to any of these events.

I'm wondering how many people actually use these to get a quick overview understanding of current topics.

If you do, please say which ones, why you do, what your religious stance is, and if you can, offer some other sources that i don't know of that are similar to these.

  • Do Christians realize how rude they are?

I say Christians cause on here it is mainly atheists and Christians.

But when you say things like ''how can atheists be good without god" and "atheism means you are selfish" and "you are wrong" (which means i'm going to hell) and "could your atheism be the result of abuse" (meaning, your parents are douches aren't they) and all the other things you say, don't you realize how rude this is?

Maybe i'm just being sensitive, you know, reading your statements and realizing where they lead and what they mean, but i'm pretty sure you are just being rude.

Another way to say this is "because your parents are/were horrible people you grew up wrong and only do things for yourself, cannot do anything good and are abusive and rude and angry, and you will burn, be stabbed repeatably, eaten while alive, and tortured for all eternity."

Does that sound nice? Does that sound like a healthy worldview?

BTW, for theists who believe in a fiery hell, if you knew of someone who captured somebody, chained them in a basement, lit them on fire over and over, but always kept them alive, starved, blinded them, burned them, and did this for their whole life, finally killing the person, would you say they were godlike?

  • Theists against evolution, do people study and read?

Now, i did not know much about evolution a year ago, and science didn't destroy my faith, sociocultural facts did. But i've studied evolution now, and am continuing to do so.

My point is, why do theists argue against something they know nothing about? There IS evidence for evolution, and explanations for nearly everything involved. There are holes but holes are present in religions as well, belief does occur on both sides, but in science FACT takes up far more space.

To be honest, the ignorance of theists on here helped to destroy my faith, but only a small part. For people who have studied evolution in depth we CAN tell when you people know nothing about it and fake having knowledge on the topic. Who do you think you're kidding? How do you think you will 'bring us to Christ' if we can tell you haven't put any thought into evolution, genetics, biology, science, and the such?

I'm sorry, but you're wrong, gods in the religious sense do not exist. Atheism isn't for everybody, and religion will always exist, but it's the truth.

  • Who has seen the movie Agora?

And when will it be released to the USA on dvd? I want to watch by proper means, it sounds like it is a pretty good (probably not amazing) movie with plenty of controversy. This is mainly a question for atheists and I know plenty of you are in the R&S section.

BTW, this is the recent movie with Rachel Weisz in it.

  • Religious people believe in child abuse in Hell?

A lot of religions believe in an eternal hell with everlasting suffering, based sometimes purely on the 'souls' belief in their god. I want theists to tell me if they believe that a child born in another religion, say a little girl, who kicked her mom right before getting run over by a car (who did not believe in Allah, or called upon Jesus, or any gods) is going to hell and is going to suffer forever.

Come on theists, if you honestly believe this tell me. Maybe the girl grew up to be 13, now she's thirteen, swore at her mother, then died. She's suffering in hell now and forever? I mean, forever?

  • For Creationists - what about evolution makes you NOT believe in it?

to be more precise, what about evolution does not work in your mind? how do you discredit evolution itself? what 'anomalies' cause you to not believe evolution happens?

i'd like some real answers thank you.

for atheists, avoid answering please unless you have something smart or witty to say!

  • Actually, who has read 'The Genesis Flood?'?

this is the most ridiculous thing i have ever looked at. probably not true, but definitely up there. if your religious and like this book, then tell me why, cause i'm having a hard time NOT laughing at this and them feeling remorse for those who believe it.

i'm serious, if you like it, tell me why just so i can understand.

if you don't like it, tell me why so i can laugh more.

  • Spiritually speaking, do i have bad karma?

So i bought some stone bookends ... and one was broken.

And then i bought a dvd tower, and it nearly broke when i finished and moved it (a little damage at one part that does NOT affect the integrity of the item ... yet).

And then after getting the books off i tried to move a bookshelf and it literally exploded. It then proceeded to fall sideways.

Finally i bought a metal shelf system, like you'd see in a garage to put my books and things on and one of the poles was loose and i had to fix it and then screw the poles together in a particular way so the groove part wouldn't come undone.

this was all in the last 3 hours - was Memorial evening just not my night?

  • So we came from stardust?

Yeah, when i read this last week i was like, ''seriously atheists?" being atheist myself i was like, 'oh the theories to try to make ourselves feel better.'

Then i read up on it and now i understand. We get carbon from the reactions happening in stars and sending off all the material into space and unto planets, like earth. Carbon being the best known building block for complex systems, such as living bodies, then slowly sprouted living things on earth and billions of years later here am I.

Does anyone else believe this? Are there any hard hits against it, cause now that i've looked into it this seems pretty reputable.

  • Should i come out? (er, as an atheist)?

I am a ‘weak’ atheist; I don’t ‘believe’ there is a god or any gods, but I don’t know for sure. I’ve had doubts most of my life but till about a year ago I was really on the fence and since about five months I feel like I am really an atheist now. I was very active in my faith most of my adolescence. I have no desire to attend church anymore for any other reason than to see people I know or for some ‘entertainment.’

I go to a private religious college and almost every single one of my friends from high school and here at college are religious, as well as my family. I also plan on going to a religious graduate school that has a good program for my interests. Should I ‘come out’ to these people and tell them I don’t believe anymore?

The main reason I say so is this: my parents. I love my parents, however, up till a couple years ago we didn’t get along at all. When I told them I felt like I was becoming atheistic a year ago they both got pretty sad. They are devoted to God and church has really helped them in a lot of ways that no one can deny. But now they are getting old and my dad is being diagnosed with dementia. I want to be open, I feel pent-up, but I really want to leave my parents in ignorance, especially my father while he’s still alive. I hate to have them deal with the knowledge of me not believing (from their POV) and then what other people will say to them. I'm really upset about my father's dementia (we don't know what it is yet, Alzheimer's, etc....) and I don't want to add any big issues.

Looking for yes’s or no’s or advice. I’m being real sincere and down to earth here I hope you guys and gals will be so back.

  • What are some good atheist books to read?

i like to study up on things. i'm looking for anything from informational to funny, from offensive and aggressive to neutral. preferably if you offer one or two of the best one's you have personally read and why. thank you.

ive read God is not Great / The Blind Watchmaker / 50 Reasons people give for believing in God / What's God got to do with It / Atheism: a brief introduction / The Atheist's Way / Life, Sex, and Ideas / Irreligion / and God: the failed hypothesis

im just looking for some other good reads. by the way, for those who want to say ''the Bible'' - ive read it - not the whole Old Test. but over 700 pages from it and the new testament. and yes, some good things in there, but dont 'remind' me to it more ... unless you want to make me laugh.
