In my eighth grade English class, I was taught that when writing an essay, it's very tacky to insert things like "The purpose of this essay is..." or "I'm writing this essay to...", etc. However, I'm confused because when I was looking at winning scholarship essays the writers put stuff like , "I'm applying for the ____ scholarship" and asking way too many rhetorical questions (another something I was taught was very, very tacky in essay writing).

What's the deal here?

Is it okay to write the scholarship I'm applying for or not?

Should I refrain from talking excessively about myself?

Any tips for writing a scholarship essay?
