  • Canine Distemper - Survivor - what's next?

    Please read everything before answering. Sensitive issue.

    we were given 3 weeks- 1 month to observe our dog that suffered from canine distemper. he is an adopted dog from an irresponsible dog owner. the dog is about a year old i think.

    let me share his background:

    the 1st day that we adopted the dog, we saw her twitching stunt. we thought her was just ran over a car or something. so we brought her to our vet for check up. as per doctor, our adopted dog suffered canine distemper.

    doctor advised for a month's observation if she will worsen. while the doctor's checking her up, he commented that she looked like a survivor as she had overcome the "danger" period of the disease.

    this is her 1month after being diagnosed that she have had distemper. she's eating well(even gained weight), up and about, playful, very active and has nice fur. no other symptoms of CDV except the after-effect on twitching(which i read in wikipedia that it may diminish through time). we give her nice bath every 5 days. doesn't have ticks or something.

    ----------------------

    i have few questions to those who are experienced dog owners.

    -did she surpass the danger period completely?

    -should i still be alarmed about the virus even if doctor said it is no longer communicable? i have 3 other dogs inside the house. with complete and timely vaccinations/boosters. the adopted dog stays inside our backyard, we don't have cold weather. normally climate is about 30-37 Celsius.

    -i found skin inflammation both on her front limbs (the limbs that connect from rib cage to front limbs)---is this still related to CDV complications?

    ----------------

    i am worried as i have loved this adopted dog as my own. i give her the same food like with my 3 other dogs. our vet said if she worsens before the 1month observation, we may have to put her to sleep. i love her so much. i want to think positive but i still get sleepless nights.

    she's scheduled for a general check up next week. given that long period, please help me through this by extending a little help through answering my questions.

    IS SHE GONNA BE OKAY? CAN I NOT WORRY ABOUT IT SO MUCH?

    May God bless you and your kind heart for taking time in answering.
