I am playing pokemon Heart Gold and Diamond Version. I would like to get a shiny starter on both, but when I SR like I normally do ( start+select+L+R) I get put into a white screen and the game freezes. How can I fix this?

I bought this pokemon sapphire at a local gamestop about 3 weeks ago. I have no problems with it at all, but my internal battery died. I do not get a message saying the save file is ok. The 2002 nintendo and number is above the connector pins. Everything looks legit, except the sticker does not have that number imprinted on it like all other pokemon games do.

Is it legit?

Serebii.net says it takes about 1200 steps, but I have a magmorter with magma armor and I have walked 1700 steps and nothing has hatched. What is the real number of steps it takes?

Can the luck items be placed anywhere on the 2 floors, or do they have to be placed in the same room to take effect?

I am wondering because I am shiny hunter and I like to hunt shinnies on Sapphire, but I do not want to waste my time if the internal battery running dry disables shiny pokemon from appearing.
