  • Unfair discharge from graduate lab?

A friend has spent 2.5 years in a graduate research lab working on advanced degree. She recently decided that her lab is not a good match and she should leave with a masters, so she is working on her thesis. She was injured last weekend and needs to have surgery next week. However, her PI told her that if she is not in lab full time every day, he will fire her from the lab and not allow her to complete her masters. IS THIS LEGAL?

  • Some liquid plumber spilled on my counter and dried in the form of tiny crystals. What do I do?

The counter does not appear to be damaged, just slightly discolored--it was white to begin with. I tried soaking the counter in soapy water over night. Should I just try to scrape the crystals off with something? I know lots of household cleaners should not mix with liquid plumber, so I am not sure what to do.

  • Gold versus silver military medals?

My grandfather has some gold medals he earned as a major in the US Air Force/Army Air Corps. Later he was promoted to a Lt. Colonel. My cousin, who has also had a military career said that they should be silver since he was promoted to Lt. Colonel. Now, my family is talking about painting them silver (my grandfather passed away last year and we had not discussed this with him previously). Is it ok to paint them? Is it better to just leave them as they are?

  • foot feels funny when walking?

I have been playing ultimate frisbee and afterwards my foot (and I guess some of my ankle) feels kind of funny when walking around, especially when walking barefoot. It doesn't hurt, but it doesn't feel right. In the past this has lasted several days. If I wrap a bandage around the arch of my foot and walk around the funny feeling mostly seems to go away. Also, I am no stranger to muscle pain and I do not think this is muscular. Does anyone know what this is?

  • Can you help translate from English to Spanish?

My roommate is having a moving company come tomorrow and has posted a sign on my doors which say "Do not Move". I live in California, and I'd like to write the Spanish translation below it. It would be even better, if you could tell me how to say "Do not move the items in this room", "Do not move the items in this cabinet," and "Do not move the items here." muchas gracias!

  • Crater in tooth?!?

A crater has developed on the side of one of my teeth. It's as though the the enamel has literally exploded away in a circular fashion and left a dented brown hole. My dental insurance kicks in in a couple of weeks. At that point, I will get this checked out ASAP. Until then, any suggestions?

  • Where is the best place to get car financing?

I've heard you should go to credit unions, but they can be flaky and sometimes backfire. What about banks, insurance companies, and dealerships?

  • What happens if I decide to drop out of grad school after a year and get a job instead?

I haven't started graduate school yet, but I'm scared of what will happen when I do. Will I ever be able to go to grad school in the future if I drop out?

I'm entering a Ph.D. program this fall. I keep thinking about how I've been just as happy doing jobs where all I need is a bachelor's (I have an engineering degree, so it's not like I have to go to grad school), and I'm not sure I have the drive to conqueor these knowledge towers in front of me. I'm also upset because my boyfriend will be starting a job 800 miles away at the same time I start school. Honestly, I want to give up on grad school and just go get a job in his city, but I already signed a lease for next year.

  • I want to buy a new economy car, but have some questions.?

Should I buy or lease? Should I get ABS? Is it worth it to shell out a few thousand more bucks to get better safety features and a longer, more comprehensive warranty? Is it worth it to save a few thousand bucks by getting a car which is 5 years old instead?

  • Why do milk and yogurt make me EXTREMELY tired?

When I consume milk or yogurt I get EXTREMELY tired, cannot concentrate, and get in a very bad mood if I do not sleep. Is this some weird form of dairy allergy? I don't want to believe it's the tryptophan, because it's so bad that I can consume an extremely small amount and still feel this way.
