Weird problem. I believe my primary boot device (a 128gb ssd) has become corrupted or outright failed (no longer boots or detects the drive in the bios.

This normally would not be an issue since I would just boot to my USB drive with windows install on it, format the bad drive from that, and be on my way.

Problem is when the drive is plugged in, my laptop won't allow booting from anything else. I have tried removing everything but the usb from the boot list, I have tried overriding the boot device straight out of the bios.

nothing.

Anyway I am in the process of popping in a new drive and we'll on my way to re imaging it, so it's not really a problem.

I just wanted to know if anyone has any ideas what caused this, because I have never had a failed drive outright disable booting from other devices

I have gotten a new private security contract recently and part of my duties is to make patrols to specific spots at randomized times of the day. I am supposed to log these times and which site I patrolled.

problem is I tend to be very busy during these patrols managing the guards posted there so i have very little time to stop and write down the time/site and i often forget to do so before moving on to the next one. after a few hours of this I have a LOT of holes in my paperwork.

I was wondering if anyone knows of a device or moblie app (ios for me) that allows me to quickly log times

like an example of what i am looking for is this:

you can create A B and C on the menu and name them what you want. when you tap A it logs the current time and letter eg.

14:35- A

14:47- B

15:00- C

etc,

at my previous job i simply set alarms throughout the day on my iphone. when it went off, i would go.

I can't do that at this job since the client wants patrols randomized

I know anyone in security, law enforcement, nursing, etc that needs to log times and places during the day would find this useful.

I know i would.

lately i have been having some issues with my MSI N260GTX graphics card

namely the "driver stopped responding and recovered" issue as well as the occasional blue screen (when the driver does not recover)

i have encountered the blue screen and driver issue most often when running sid meiers pirates! as well as having occasional corrupted graphics and lockups in hitman: Bloodmoney

I have had the card overclocked before, but never by much and once i ran into issues i set it back to stock speeds

but even at 100% fan speed i have a hard time keeping it below 60 degrees Celsius under load (where i can usually keep it at 60c with only 50-60% fan speed)

I have tried cleaning the dust out of the card iteself, switching PCI slots, removing other PCI devices (in case it was a power issue), installing the latest drivers (and beta drivers) and reverting back to the last known stable driver version.

so far after taking these steps I have not noticed any issues outside of the above mentioned games (but i have not done any extensive testing outside of this)

my question is do you think this is a software or a hardware problem?

have any of you run into similar issues like this? and more importantly have you managed to fix it without RMAing the card? (i can't since it is second hand)

the card itself has served me well for the last year or so

Assume I have nothing currently installed.

If I were to install a decent quality signal amplifier on the line coming to my house, how many cable splitters would that allow me to install around the house? (assuming they are 3 way 3.5db 7db 7db splitters)

I ask because the house we moved into is completely loaded with splitters. like at least 6 that I can see, and just a tonne of cables. (apparently the house was being rented room by room and all had cable from 1 line illegally.)

and once I moved in and tried to get shaw cable to come look at it, they sent some idiot who actually made things WORSE by running various cords outside the walls and stuff. (it looks as if you let a 5 yearold do it with supplies from radioshack. when I called them to come fix it they sent the same guy who cleaned it up on the outside... but kept all the crap wiring)

the things I need to hook up are as follows (just so you know what kind of gear I need):

- 1 HD digital box

-1 Regular digital box

- 1 cable internet modem

- 3 standard TVs with cable (no box or digital)

I DO pay for all these hookups. I am not splitting them to steal signal. I only have to split them because the house is wired so poorly.

also i don't want to spend very much on one, but I want it to work well enough to serve my needs.

any help would be appreciated.

what would be some good careers for me to look into based on the following:

- I enjoy quiet solitary work

- I enjoy paperwork over physical work (not because I am lazy, but because I enjoy being alone with my thoughts)

- I enjoy fixing things and restoring things (machines, computers, tools, furniture, etc. anything that needs fixing)

- I like to help people whenever asked, but i prefer NOT to work directly with others (often the people you work with is the most stressful part of a job in my opinion)

- I live where it gets to -50c in the winter and up to +35c in the summer... so nothing that requires a lot of outdoors work

Family has suggested things like:

-Librarian

- Museum worker

- something in the science field

- psychologist

Note: I am physically fit and I am a fairly smart guy, so that is covered.

Also, I am young and planning to do some post secondary, so education will not be an issue.

just throw out some suggestions based on all this. I ask because I am really overwhelmed by all the possible paths I can take and want to narrow it down

anyway, I would just like to know if there are any good pc games (any genre really don't care) that I can play for 5 min or so then let it just sit for about 15-20 min without me having to do anything.

I am looking for a laptop that can play a few games (left4dead, counterstrike: source, and games of similar quality like HalfLife2.)

But another big selling point for me is good battery life.

You could point me to a laptop that can play crysis maxed out with all the bells and whistles, but if it only has 1 hour of battery time then it is useless to me (which most "gaming laptops" have.)

I am really looking for a media center laptop that has enough power to ALSO play games on the go.

now I know it is nearly impossible to have one without losing the other, but I am willing to give up a bit of both in order to strike a balance.

essentially I am looking for this:

I totally blew off my last year of highschool, and therefore did not graduate. I have done a bit of upgrading since then, but I need a diploma or GED to get a job I am up for.

I am taking my GED test really soon so I want to know if I am ready.

I need some practice tests for all sections/subjects of the Canadian GED (I am writing it this week)

I have gone through a prep book and scored at least 90% on all the practice tests in that, so I would like to try a few from another source to see if that avg. is constant and if I am really ready.

Anything would be useful, but Canadian and specifically Alberta based sources would be preferred (I am not sure how different the tests would be internationally or even provincially)

PS: to anyone with experience writing the essay portion of the GED

I just finished "For The Emperor" and I could follow reasonably well (having played the Dawn of war series of games)

But I have a feeling that my knowledge of 40k lore will only get me so far.

Basically I would like a list of 40k books that I can read in CHRONOLOGICAL order (not in order according to lore, but according to their publishing dates)

With season 2 coming to an end tonight I still have yet to find an OFFICIAL notice saying whether it will come back for a season 3 or not.

Lots of rumors flying about and people speculating on it but Fox is being pretty tight lipped about it.

The Fox website keeps saying "SEASON finale" but that doesn't really say much worth anything.

I personally hope that I see some more (and would be pissed if it gets canned) but if fox does cancel I am almost sure that we will have another "firefly" on our hands (a large following emerges out of nowhere and speaks up)

I also think they will order up another season in hopes of drawing in a larger audience because of the upcoming movie. (alot of terminator fans simply dont know the show is still going i think)

Anyway, if anyone has any official evidence that clearly states what is gonna happen then I would love to see it. (please only official, plainly worded, to the point. rumors are not to be trusted)

I have a USB headset/microphone and all the sudden the mirophone part stopped working! the headphones still have great sound and everything but the mic does not pick up any sound.

Here is what I tried:

-the mic is NOT muted

- the settings are all set up properly

- I have tried the headset on another computer and it still did not work

all wires are properly connected to the internal components (I opened it up)

If anyone can give any tips on repairing the mic or something it would help alot.
