  • how does this sound?

I am a country singer and songwriter. I have received numerous awards including best-selling solo artist of all time. My career success can be credited to my early life and supporting family. Thanks to all my fans and I hope I continue to live up to your expectations.

I was born, Troyal Garth Brooks in Tulsa, Oklahoma on February 7, 1962. Although I was the youngest of six children my father, Raymond Troyal, and mother Colleen Carroll, showed me love and support throughout my life. In 1966, my family moved to Yukon, Oklahoma where I played many sports including, track, baseball, and football. Since an early age I have enjoyed playing the guitar and singing to my friends and family. I attended Oklahoma State University on a track scholarship after finishing high school. I graduated college in 1984 with a degree in advertising. While in college I played in many clubs and bars especially at Tumbleweed in Stillwater. Feeling confident I went to Nashville, Tennessee with hopes of getting discovered. I returned 23 hours later disappointed but not broken. Then in 1986 I married Sandy Mahl, whom I met when I was a bouncer at a local bar. After we married we moved to Nashville where my career really took off. We had three daughters Taylor Mayne-Pearl, August Anna, and Allie Colleen. Then in 2001 Sandy and I divorced and in December of 2005, I married longtime friend Trisha Yearwood.

My main goal is to just be a great father to my three daughters and a great husband to my wonderful wife. I hope to be there for my family when ever they need me and I want them to know I love them. Family is the most important thing in my life and I always want to make them proud. My goals for my music career have dramatically changed over the years. Back when I first moved here my goal was just to get a contract. When Capitol Records signed me, my goals changed from winning awards to making my fans proud. My goals right now is to just lead a happy life and keep my fans and family proud and happy.

My philosophy in life is just to make my fans happy and to live freely. This is really demonstrated in my song “We Shall Be Free.” This song really shows all that is wrong with this world and if everyone just helped to fix one thing, a lot would be different. Always look for the beauty within not the color of skin. If we all do our best to create a better world then there will be no pollution, discrimination, or poverty. I really try to do things that will benefit the entire community not just myself and I think that is a great idea to live by.

My five greatest strengths are probably my singing, determination, perseverance, passion, and willingness to take chances. As a musician you have to have determination and perseverance because there are many people who will try to push you down, especially at the begin of your career. You just have to persevere through those negative opinions and continue down your path of success. When you do anything you have to have passion, something that drives you to the end. I show my passion for music through the work I put into each and every song I sing or write. When I made the decision to become a singer I was taking a huge chance. Every time I come out with a new song that might be controversial, I am putting myself on the line. But you have to be willing to take chance so you can discover new things. Taking chances also shows you have faith in yourself and trust your decisions. But for all strengths there are weaknesses. My singing of country music only allows me to reach a certain audience so I have to find ways to touch those outside of country. Taking chances is a lot like gambling; sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose. I have to carefully consider the consequences of each action before I make a decision.

My hero is really my mother. She has guided me throughout my life and music career. When going to Nashville for the very first time, she helped prepare me for the possible disappointment. She really gave me the strength and motivation I needed and helped me. On August 6. 1999 my mother passed away from cancer. This was the lowest point of my life and the greatest obstacle I have had to overcome. Without her, the inspiration for my singing, I did not know how I would continue. But her death lead me to sing, “It’s Your Song” which helped my cope and deal with her death. Every since I began singing I had been looking for the right song to sing for my mother and then I found it. Just trying to make her proud is what I strive for and that is my motivation. My music and family really helped my overcome the greatest obstacle of my life, the death of my hero, my mother.

Throughout my music career many people have influenced my singing and performing style. Three main people are George Strait, George Jones, and the group KISS. George Strait’s country music singing style is one of the greatest I have heard and it has been my dream to come anywhere close to him. Because of KISS I wanted all my concerts to be high-beat and exciting, contrary to the standard at the time. Their energy just made the crowd thrilled and now I try my best to bring that same feeling to all of my concerts. Anything from throwing water to climbing on the rafters I will be anything to make my performances great. One time I even smashed a guitar that the end, the crowd loved it!

My most significant contribution to society would have to be my music and my charitable work. My music helps motivate and inspire people everyday. Every song has a deeper meaning and this helps me spread the idea of making everyday count. I hope my music will continue to move people even when I have passed away. I started a charity, Teammates for Kids, which contributes financial resources to non-profit organizations to help benefit children. It focuses on health, education, and inner city services. It also allows children the opportunity to learn respect and dedication by participating in baseball, hockey, and football. I hope I will be remembered for the music I have sung but I also hope people will look past that and remember the children who have benefited from that.

My advice for future leaders and singers is to just live each day to the fullest and show the people you love how you feel about them. Like the song “If Tomorrow Never Comes” you never know what will be the last thing you say to them so you should always treat anyone you meet nicely. And to always stay dedicated to your dreams. By following your dreams you will get to where you want to go but if you never try you will never win. The song “The River” explains it all.

I hope my family, friends, and fans will remember me for not only my music but my contributions to charities as well. My most known song has to be “The Dance” and I hope anytime people listen to it, they will not remember me but the message I try to send. Yes, my music has won many awards but that means nothing if I do not help anyone with my success. My charity and all the charities I have worked with including Children’s Wish Foundation, have really made me a better person and have allowed me to give back to the country. Besides my music and charities I hope to be remembered as a great father and husband. I try my best to be there and support my family no matter what.

My leadership style is one that allows others to realize and learn about themselves is a manner that is supportive and guiding. I never force anyone to do anything, but I allow people, especially kids the opportunity to grow at their own pace. Whether it is by playing sports and learning self-discipline or listening and realizing through songs. Each one of my songs has an underlining message, which gets the minds of people flowing and turning. I hope that by guiding people and kids to self realization, they can grow to their personal best and create a better community.

If I could relive life I would change absolutely nothing. As the song “The Dance” shows if you miss the bad things that happen in life, the good goes with it. Yes, I guess I could miss a divorce from my first wife, Sandy, and the disappointment that has come with being in the music career but that means I would miss so much more. I would miss the love that Sandy and I share throughout our marriage and I would have never had three beautiful daughters. I would miss the struggles that I overcame that made me a better artist. Every obstacle I encountered just made me stronger and if I missed one I would be less of a man. I could have missed the pain but then I would have had to miss…. the dance.

The hardest decision I had to make was whether to retire in 2000. There are many positives and negatives to retiring. If I did retire then my family would get to see me more and spend more time with me. But then my record sell might suffer, too. Also my fans might lose interest and move on to other singers. If I did not retire then I could continue to compose and sell music. I could grow bigger but my family would suffer. In the end I chose to retire because family always comes before business. And my faith in my friends and fans was strong.

Anytime I make any decision I always weight the positives against the negatives. Usually if there are more positives then I say go for it. But it also depends on whom it affects and how much it will alter their lives. My chain of importance is first my family, then my fans, and then me. So if my family would get the short end of the stick then I take that into consideration as well. I also consider what would get a point across better. This is best used when talking about music videos. For example, when we (Trisha Yearwood and I) recorded “In Another’s Eyes” we had it all finished then when we went on the Tonight Show and performed it there, we decided to change it all. We released the video of us on the stage singing instead of the first video, because it was so real and raw and got the message across better. There are always exceptions to the process but I always consider my family and friends.

I learned Garth Brooks is really just a good ole country boy from Yukon, Oklahoma. He really wants to make his friends, family, and fans proud of his. Yes, he might not be a president who can make numerous governmental changes in 4 years time, but he is a country singer who can touch the lives of millions and motivate kids. He really gives back to the people who gave to him but getting involved in charities and different activities. He is a great country singer but that is not who he is. His family is the most important thing in his life and he will sacrifice for them it necessary. I really admire his self confidence and the trust he has in his fans to respect his decisions. I respect Garth Brooks as a singer, songwriter, husband, and a father. He truly is an inspirational leader.
