  • How to maximize distributions from tax deferred and taxable accounts?

    How do you calculate the optimal amount to withdrawal from tax deferred and taxable accounts?

    For example: If someone has $1,000,000 in a taxable account and $3,000,000 in R/O IRA and wants to spend $180,000 a year during retirement. What amount should be taken from each account. Assuming inflation is 3% and return is 7% with years in retirement being 20.

    From what I can recall from my intermediate Macroeconomics classes from awhile back, you need to use some type of maximization derivative to find the optimal level (assuming current tax levels). How would you create this in excel?

  • calculating IRR on HP12C?

    I am trying to calculate the IRR with the initial pmt being $741,589.89 with 51 months at $5,943.59 and 214 months at $3,708.62. I can't seem to get it to work without manually entering in all 265 entries, but I know there is a short cut. Help would be awesome.

  • Donating a life insurance policy to charity?

    My mom will be receiving a VUL policy with about $60,000 in cash value open her retirement this year (she was upper management for a company and the policy was key person insurance I believe). I have several questions. First, I assume the cash value with be considered income and she will have to pay income tax on it. Is that correct? If she donates the VUL to a charity, will she receive a $60,000 tax deduction even though the company was the one paying the premiums? She is 64 and doesn't need life insurance, nor does she need the income.

    To summarize my question, can my mom make a charity the owner of a the VUL and not pay taxes on the income (assuming she donates the policy the year she retires)? Our goal is not to have her pay taxes on the cash value of the VUL.

  • How to have the the size of a graph in excel depending on the number of data points?

    I am creating an excel spreadsheet for work that allows for inputs of someones age and shows the present value of lump sum. I was able to us IF statements to allow the user to input all the needed information and get the correct answer of PV and IRR. Now I am trying to do a line graph to show how the principal will decrease over time. Since the time period of the graph will change depending on the users inputs, how can I have the graph automatically select the right data range and not cut short the graph or have it go to long? If the use puts 10 in for N, I want the graph to show 10 years and if the user puts 20 in for N, I want the graph to show 20 years. Is this possible?

  • Trying to calculate IRR for a pension?

    I am trying to create an excel spreadsheet that will calculate the PV of a pension and based off of the lump sum payment offer, calculate the IRR needed to recreate the same stream of monthly payments. The pension is a joint survivor where the spouse will receive 65% of the pension owners payments after the pension owner dies.

    When I test my spreadsheet by having the lump payment equal the PV of the pension to ensure the discount rate = IRR, it works as long as the spouse dies first or the spouse receives full pension payments. To calculate the spouse's pmt's I am simply taking the monthly pmt and multiplying it by 65% and using that number in my XIRR cash flow column in excel.

    Am I missing something with how to calculate IRR? Can I not simply reduce the cash flow by 35% and expect IRR to equal the discount rate if the PV of the pension and lump sum payment are equal?

  • Need help calculating IRR for a pension?

    I am trying to calculate PV and IRR for a pension plan. The person receives $5,000 at the beginning of the month for the rest of his life (assuming he lives for the next 10 year). The payment is static and will not grow. The discount rate is 3.5%. I get $507,108 when I use:

    N = 120

    r= 3.5%/12 months

    PMT = 5000

    FV = 0

    My problem is when I go back and try to find the IRR. If a company is offering $400,000 to buyout the pension, what is the IRR to equal the $5,000 monthly payments for 10 years?

  • Who has ownership of the dog?

    Brief history, I bought my ex girlfriend a dog in august 2010. I graduated college, she was going to into her senior year. While at school her senior year, she had a friend watch the dog. We broke up during the spring, and my ex got the dog back from the friend in May. She then got a job in NYC and gave the dog to me in September to take care of. Verbally, she said that if she last in NYC past X-mass, the dog would be mine to keep. It is past x-mass and I still have the dog, as well as pay for dog food, dog treats, toys, etc. for the dog. I offered to buy the dog from her, but she refused and said "the dog is practically mine", she just wants to be able to take the dog when she visits her parents. Who has ownership of the dog? It was registered with the state last summer in my ex's name and the chip in her is also my ex's parents address; however, due to the verbal agreement and the length of time I have had and supported the dog I believe it is mine. I have grown attached to the dog and don't want it taken away from me, nor do I want to keep dealing with my ex and passing the dog back and forth whenever she is home vising her parents.

  • Sending flower etiquette?

    My GF's birthday is coming up and she just moved to NYC. She works as an analyst for a large firm and lives in a sub-lease apartment. Would it be inappropriate to send her flowers to her work (she started about 6 weeks ago and is the youngest employee at her location)? If I don't send it to her work, how does it work sending it to an apartment complex? Would they go up to her floor and deliver them and if she isn't there would they just leave it at the door?

  • How to get a six or eight pack?

    I am 23 and ran cross country in college. I always lifted but now that I am not a competitive runner anymore I have increased my workout in the weight room and decreased my milage. I am 5'8, 170 lbs, but I cannot get that ripped six or eight pack. When I was running 80-90 miles a week, I was thinner (about 150 lbs), but still didn't have that ripped look. Now I run about 4.5 miles every morning, and lift for 1.5 hours 3x a week. I do ab workouts on the days I lift, take Creatine before my lifting workouts, whey protein after, and a CLA supplement before every meal. Any ideas how I can get that really ripped ab look? Another supplement to take, changes to my workout schedule, etc...For breakfast I eat a piece of toast. Lunch is a salami sandwhich, yogart, and a small bag of chips and dinner is all over the place. My abs are strong, just not ripped. Any suggestions would be great.

  • how do i know if the girl is uninterested or playing hard to get?

    I met a waitress at a sports bar when I was with a group of guys. One of them (without my knowledge) got the waitress to give me her number. We talked a good amount, left the bar and came back 2 hours later. The second time, she would come by and we would talk for 5-10 minutes at a time. We texted some that night and the next night. I went back to the sports bar a few days later and once again we talked a lot and she seems real interested. She told me she would text me when she got out of work and hugged me good bye. I wanted to ask her out on a date, but her boss started yelling at her to go clear some tables so I didn't really have the chance. We texted today but she never responded to my last one where I ask something about her moving (she mentioned she might be moving to another apartment yesterday)." She seems interested, but at the same time not very responsive to texts. When I saw her the 2nd time, she came over and talked with me when she wasn't even my waitress. How should I proceed? Text her again, or wait till I see her again. Not looking for a hookup, but would like to take her out on a date. She seems either interested and not good about responding to texts (my ex hated texting and talking on the phone), interested but playing hard to get, or not really interested but enjoys hanging out when I go into the sports bar (not her just trying to get tips b/c she was ignoring her other tables and the 2nd time she wasn't even our waitress). any ideas on how to proceed without being creepy would be great.

  • What to do about job offers?

    I received a job offer from a smaller company to be an associate wealth manager and they want to hear back by tomorrow at 5:00 on whether I accept the offer or not. However, I have had my final interview with a larger company this last tuesday for an investment analyst position and that is the job I would much rather have (my dream job). They said I would hear back by the end of next week. I also have more interviews already scheduled with large firms for advisor positions. I would love to do the investment analyst role, and I am skeptical of taking an advisor role because I don't know how well I would do at getting clients (I am only 23 and have a small "natural market"). Can I ask the company who made the offer for more time to decide? Can I ask the company who told me I would hear back next week if they could give me any indication on where I stand? I could take the offer and if I do get the offer for my dream job, turn around and turn down my original offer but I feel like that is rude. My start date for the current offer would be after I would hear back from the job I am waiting on.

  • question about my breakup.?

    We dated for several years. I am 2 years older, but she was only a year below me. I graduated last year and she graduates this year. Everyone is telling me she is just confused and stressed since she is going to school full time, almost working full time, and has athletic practice. I don't really believe her when she says her feelings have changed, but I don't know what to do. During the fall term everything was great, but she wasn't as busy or as stressed as she is now. Also, she started talking to one of her prof's a lot (I think it borders on an inapproriate relationship by the prof, not b/c of content of the talks but the frequency (almost daily) and lenght (usually hours). So how much does that have to do with the breakup. The prof is 50ish, so there isn't really a relationship connection I believe on her part (not on his for sure), but is the newness and excitement of that relationship putting doubts in her? She won't talk to me after the breakup, she says she needs space but won't tell me why she needs space. Back in November she was showing me what engagement rings she liked, 2 months later she dumps me. So should I really believe her feelings have changed or is it the stress/pressure of entering the real world soon? How much does the new friendship with the prof have to do with things?

  • how to move on from a relationship?

    so my girlfriend of 3.5 years left me abruptly. Only reason she gave me was her feelings have changed and that I wasn't right for her right now and that she wants to be alone. She is graduating from college in may, i graduated last year. I/We were looking at engagment rings not to long ago and I already had everything planned out (the ring, the proposal, etc.). So if I was planning on marrying her and she left me, how do I move on? To me, any other person I might meet in the future is option to and is only available b/c the one I was planning on marrying left me. Just b/c she left me, that doesn't change my feelings towards her. Time only helps cover them up, but it doesnt' change them. So how do I settle for option 2, and is that really fair to the other girl. Also, if I was sure about my last gf (was planning on marrying her) and it didn't work out b/c "it wasn't meant to be" (i hate that phrase), how will i ever know in the future if it is right since apparently I was wrong before. Another note, I don't believe me and my ex are over for good. My friends just keep telling me to move on and I dont' get how to do that
