  • E85 gasoline hesitation?

Last summer I started putting e85 into my cavalier. Its not a FFV but please dont preach to me about that little detail. I ran straight e85 for 3 months. Anyways car runs fine.

Durning winter I began putting straight gas into car due to cold temps and lower prices. The car started to hesitate on acceleration from a stop. I push the pedal and the car engine just loses power and if I push on the gas harder and itll recover just fine. Only when driving slow or stopped and accelerating dose it do this.

I replaced fuel filter and no help. I started putting 50% e85 back in and the car doesnt hesitate. This week back to gas and hesitation again. Any ideas?

  • When will the cost of avgas go down?

8 years ago when I began flying the beloved 152 way $50/hr to rent. Its $95/hr now, no doubt mostly due to fuel costs. When is the cost going to go down? And whats gonna cause it to go down?

I dont see how any new pilots will learn when it costs near $10k to get a lowly private license. Makes me sad really, no one can learn to fly unless theyre loaded.

  • Fun approach procedures?

This is a damn blatant flight sim question. I would like to fly some oddball approaches on there. What are some?

    I already have

VORDMEARC to some airport in maryland (arc leads directly to runway and MAP with no striagh in leg)

    LDA 19 DCA

    VOR 13L/R JFK

    LOC 15 (??) ASE

And the wonderful IGS at hong kong (with a modded up game)

I also think PHNL has an LDA style one, but not sure.

    Thanks for the tips guise.

  • Flying saucer airplane?

Thanks to someone elses question, I started thinking.

If a frisbee can fly why havent we made an airplane disc to fly?

Obviously theres all sorts of problems to work out here but maybe a counter rotating engine on a 'stationary' interior, like the tail rotor of a helicopter. Also have an engine mounted on the stationary part for forward motion, and an engine mounted on the spinning part for rotation.

Eeh who knows. Just an idea. Opinions?

  • 757 lower comparment air?

I suck at explaining but ill try me best here.

Out at UPS we loose load packages into the underside of the aircraft, the 'baggage compartment' basically. For some reason, when its cold out, the air is blowing down there through the vents. Only when its cold out. This air isnt heated either. Its ambient temperature and when its 20 degrees out, blowing air doesnt feel good. As far as I can tell its not APU bleed air or anything. Theres a vent in the lower compartment that sucks the air in and it gets blown out along the walls. Just circulated air.

So I have a ton of questions about this. Why is the air on when its not heated? Its not for pressuriization because the door is open. Why only when its cold out? Why do the pilots have it on? Or is it automated?

Thanks for anyone that has any info on this. d:)

  • Why is an aviation career shitty?

Im currently training towards the commercial with the plan to get the CFI shortly after. In the end I hope to make it into the airlines. All the veteran pilots who have airline expierence on here make the prospect of flying for the airlines seem foolish. Shitty hours, low annual pay (I can slave away at a non-degree fulltime job and make more than a regional pilot?), and tough competition standing in the way to move up. I dont doubt this experience, but I must ask, what happend with airline jobs? Why do they pay so low? Why does everyone want these jobs? Ive noticed many people say 20 years ago an airline job was nice. My question is what happend to make the airline pilot job so shitty compared to other careers? Im assuming the post-911, high oil price world has something to do with it. Is that all though?

At all this info I think I might keep my fulltime job and instruct as a career. I love to teach, maybe this is better than roughing it in the regionals.

  • Vegetarian/vegans...what made you take the plunge?

Pretty straight forward question. Why did you because a vegetarian or vegan?

For me it was environmental reasons. A pound of meat takes 16 pounds of grain to create. I also put ethanol in my car. I am not contributing to higher grain costs because i dont eat meat. My 'meat grain' is going to my gas tank. Lol

Also to fight the idological war with the other 97% of america. 'You need protien' 'meat is good for you' 'you need milk to have strong bones' 'i cant eat vegetairian food its gross (what the **** you think orange j00ze is?)'

    What about you d00dz

  • The changes to the cost of ethanol (E85)?

What contributes to the cost of ethanol? I know gasoline is highly dependent on the cost of oil and also the season. In summer gas goes up in winter gas goes down.

I noticed ethanol held steady at 326 a gallon for a while with small fluctuations. Now one station is selling at 330 a gallon and a place a mile away has it for 292. What causes the costs of ethanol to change? What should i look for to predict or forsee ethanol price fluctuations? Ive heard something about futures prices but am ignorant as hell when it comes to things like that. Any halp clarifying???!!

  • Mach in relation to temperature?

I've realized mach is related to air temperature and not pressure.

Seeing as sound is a vibrational energy of air it would seem that the thinner the air (farther apart the molecules are) they slower the vibration would travel. Obviously a colder molecule vibrates slower accounting for the slower speed of sound in cold air but why doesn't pressure make a difference? Why does sound travel so fast through water? Because its denser right?

Also if you climbed altituide, what would happen to sound (assuming the temperature stayed the same...I know it doesnt but bear with me) would the speed of sound stay the same and the 'intensity' of the sound would diminish? So a sound would just get quieter and quieter as you climb?

  • Canards on airliners?

Seeing all the info I got about cg and the tail downward force it seems pretty simple of a concept to put canards on airplanes instead.

Instead of a tail down force why not have a nose up force? This would contribute to lift and im assuming a fuel saving benefit. Why haven't the airlines did that yet?

    4 AnswersAircraft10 years ago
  • Airliner center of gravity range?

Im aware that the cg is usually ahead of the center of lift, at least in small airplanes. This makes the plane want to 'fly forward' sorta like putting the fat kid on the front of a sled. And also as the cg moves closer to center o lift the aircraft has less stability, it becomes more touch. I've noticed this flying solo for a long time in a 172 then loading it tail heavy and flying (still in the envelope of course). The plane got touchy and was a little less stable holding a certain speed at cruise.

So is this how it is in large airliners? I know the cg is usually ahead of cl but im assuming this doesn't always have to be ture. How far ahead is the cg range on a large airliner in relation to center of lift? Can an airliner fly 'tail heavy' (cg behind the cl) actually are there any aircraft that always have the cg behind the cl? Im assuiming a canard aircraft can do that but just curious.

  • Population growth in the future?

I've been thinking latley. There's a lot of people on this planet. And more and more keep being born. The world popluation is doing a sort of exponential growth and as taught in 4th grade the population will reach a limit where the environment can't sustain it and the population balances itself out (people starve and die)

Now this might not be a problem now but earth can't sustain this many people. Im assuming the environment will get trashed because were a species, we look out for ourselves. I just see population as no stopping until it has too. Famine, wars over food and resources, holocausts to control population. It seems bleak...

Not a question but anyone have any ideas on how we could prevent this obvious soon to be tragedy?

  • Enzyme and yeast question?

I decided to ask this here cause the beer section is full of drunkards with no idea about biochemistry.

Im trying to make alcohol from extra bread we have. I found about 3lbs sugar to one gallon of water makes a nicely fermantable mixture. I boil the bread for an hour and strain out the soil leftovers and am left with cloudy starchy water. I actually have a few questions by the way.

Is the weight of bread mostly starch? About what percent by weight is starch?

Yeast can only ferment sugar. So first I need to convert starch to sugar with enzyme. I bought amylase and the instructions say 'one tsp for 5 gal'

Can a teaspoon of enzyme break down that much yeast? How much enzyme should I use to convert about a pound of yeast to sugar?

Also when the enzyme converts starch to sugar is this a straight reaction? Will I get a pound of sugar out of one pound of yeast or do the enzymes 'eat up' part of the starch molecule?

    Sorry so long guys.

Basically how much starch is in bread?

    how much enzyme is needed?

how much sugar do I get per pound of starch? Thanks so much in advance.

  • Helicopter PIC seating?

I just seen a question about seating in a fighter helicopter. This got me thinking about something I've dwelled on in the past.

In aircraft the PIC flies in left seat most of the time. But in helicopters the PIC is on right side if im not mistaken.

    Why is this?

  • Where do i get enzymes for brewing?

My girlfriend has a cousin who long story, has a assload of extra bread from her delivery route. I've been brewing and possibly distilling alcohol in the hope I can get it pure enough to use in my car.

Now I've been using sugar and its like 3 dollars for a 5 pound bag. Obviously this isn't very cost effective. If I can use all this extra bread it would be great.

I also know I need enzymes to turn the starch in the bread into sugars. Is there a place I can get them from? I don't think we have a home brew store around there and im sorta a DIY kinda guy. Lol

I read on wikipedia that saliva has amylase in it...which will break starches down. So im assuming I can salivate into the must and it'll work. This will be distilled so who cares but is there a better DIY way to do this or do I have to scour the internet to order it.

Anyone on here ride one? Is it worth the 7000 cents ill have to pay? How about the chances of some MEI time? I can fly it on FS2004 like a pro so I think id be good. <--- I'm joking guise.

  • Around alternative vehicle questions?

How is the 'alternative fuel vehicle' category here always a random dump of questions that are as far away as possible from being about alternative fuel?????

I come to lurk around and answer anyones questions about e85 mostly but I end up answering questions about dating, fashion, math and all sorts of stuff. I've also only been trolling around alternative fuel vehicles for roughly a week.

Obviously this is people being dipshyts but how does yahoo automatically categorize these things? Does everyone use ethanol or fuel cell in dating questions?

'Woould I be like cool if I date a guy he has liek a car that runs on biodiesle and the dace were goign to is soooooo omg oh emmm geee but like wut should I wear??'

    >>>yahoo says 'alternative fuel vehicles' in 'environment'

    Lol

  • Flaws with current global warming theory?

I just answered a question saying to remain skeptical about global warming even though I believe it is occuring through manmade processes. This is beneficial to the scientific method and will help refine global warming theory by finding current flaws.

What are the main arguments against global warming? I'm very curious now.

  • Night x/c requirements for commercial license?

One of the commercial pilot flight requirements is a 100nm cross country flight instrutcion time at night.

And one of the instrument requirements is a 250nm x/c flight in simulated or actual ifr conditions. I've already did that flight and got the rating. I also did that flight in night conditions. Me and my current instructor are pondering if since that flight was at night if it also can count towards the commercial license?

Reading the fars now. Any expert opinions?
