  • What's the best way to organize my potential sales contacts?

I have applied for a position that involves selling services. I'm not really a sales type per se but I am not afraid of cold-calling or other ways of contacting people I don't know regarding something I believe in, and this position fits the bill.

During an informational interview with the person vacating the position, I learned that the hiring manager really wants to hire someone with a lot of contacts. My contacts in this field are rusty as I've been out of the field for 3 years. I have confidence I can reassemble and rebuild my contacts but need advise on the best way to organize them, and perhaps have them ready to show the hiring manager if need be. The job hasn't closed yet so I have a little time but maybe not more than a few days.

I have a home computer (Mac) with Outlook, an old laptop with Windows and a Spectrum 2 Verizon smartphone. I am also tempted to get an old-fashioned paper address book since I've had trouble losing data before (especially from my last two "smart" phones).

    Thanks for your advice!

  • How can one find the best professors at a particular school before starting college?

I have heard that there are online sites where students evaluate the professors and classes they've already taken and give advice to those who may be considering taking those classes. It would be such a help to know in advance which are the best profs, especially for classes that everyone has to take.

  • Am I a "new student" or a "transfer student"?

Trying to apply to a community college where it is next to impossible to reach a human being to ask questions. If I have some credits from a previous college from a few years ago, but I am not CURRENTLY a college student, do I apply as a new student or a transfer student? You have to choose the category in order to apply.

  • What does it mean: Fortune 500, Fortune 50, Fortune 1000, etc.?

I see these terms bandied about a lot (Fortune 500 for longer than the others) and would appreciate understanding exactly what they mean. Any credible references would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • What kind of shoes are good for Zumba classes?

I just started the class and it's a blast, but my shoes are really walking shoes and don't provide the right mix of friction and slide for this class. The teacher suggested either cheerleader shoes or shoes with cork. I've never been a cheerleader and don't really know how cheerleader shoes are different from other athletic shoes. I like the idea of cork because it's so lightweight but what kind of athletic shoes have cork in them? Would like to stay under about $60-$75 if possible, especially since they're specialty shoes.

  • How do I learn to use social media productively for my job search?

Re: Facebook, I'd like to get on but I don't want to expose myself to hackers or spend an hour or more a day just managing the account, clearing out spam, etc. I'm on LinkedIn but don't know how to use it well. I realize these tools could help me in my job search, especially by connecting with old friends and coworkers. Plus it would be nice to reconnect for the social aspect as well.

  • What is the food or beverage additive called something like phthalate?

I saw a very brief report on TV that said consuming food or beverages with this additive can make it difficult or impossible to lose weight. Anybody know what I'm talking about? Can you share some scientific data on this? If I'm inadvertently consuming this I'd like to know how to spell it and more about it so I can decide if I need to avoid it.

  • Etiquette question regarding tipping a food delivery person:?

How can one encourage a customer to tip properly without being inappropriate? Young man makes his living delivering food from an upscale sandwich shop, sometimes delivering 60-100 boxed lunches at a time. Tips are a major part of his income, yet some customers don't tip him at all despite excellent service. He thinks some customers (such as not-for-profits) may not realize tipping is customary and income he counts on. Most are paid by credit card, and he asks the customer to please "sign on the line and total at the bottom" which calls attention to the spot on the credit card slip where the tip goes. Despite this, many customers just sign the form ignore the "total" box which leaves him with no tip. Any suggestions for diplomatic and appropriate ways to call attention to the tip area on credit card slip, or otherwise make the customer aware that a tip is customary, appreciated and needed? He can't be blatant like saying, "Don't forget the tip" since it is in fact optional.

  • Couple separated twice, wife dated others, now likely pregnant-who's responsible?

A young married couple living in Texas have separated twice, each time for 1-2 months, with the wife leaving each time, saying she no longer loved him, etc. Now she is suddenly back, saying she really, really wants to be with him and make a go of the marriage. Although she claims she didn't sleep with others, she is likely pregnant. If she is pregnant,is the husband financially responsible for the child even if it isn't biologically his? What is the law regarding this situation?

  • Can you recommend a good book for a high school senior who wants to be a nurse?

She is from a small town, with limited exposure to the "big wide world" and I'd like to buy her a non-fiction book written by or about a nurse that gives insight to what the career is really like. Not all good, not all bad, but one that gets at the heart of what a nurse does and the difference they can make in people's lives. What comes to mind is the James Herriott books about a country Veterinarian...something with personal experiences that's engrossing reading and also informative.

  • Can dogs mate when the female is NOT in heat?

I was at the dog park today when an intact male mated with a non-spayed female. It happened so fast we couldn't stop it and they were stuck together. The female yelped as if in pain. The owner of the female told us she was not in heat, that she had finished being in heat two weeks ago. We go to the dog park a lot and have seen lots of dogs humping each other but this is the first time we've seen the act completed. I thought they only actually mated when the female was truly in heat. Could the female get pregnant if the owner was correct that she finished her heat two weeks ago?

  • In the field of Diagnostic Medical Sonography, is it important to attend a school accredited by CAAHEP?

The program I am looking into (there are not many choices within commuting distance) is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools but not the CAAHEP. The school is a local community college. There are no CAAHEP accredited programs nearby. How can I make sure this school will give me the proper education to know what I need to know to pass the licensing test and secure and keep employment in the field? Please answer only if you actually know the answer or can guide me to reputable sources that will provide the answer.

  • Where is a good source (other than the official recruiter) to find out about careers in the U.S. Marine Corps?

My son is 18, a recent high school graduate, in good physical, mental and emotional shape, good attitude, no criminal or drug problems, no tattoos, got a 79 on the ASVAB. He wants to be a Marine and has been firm in this resolve for nearly a year. We have spoken with the recruiter and he seems to be a stand-up guy, but as his mother (and the kind of person who researches big decisions before making them) I'd like to find out more about the careers he might qualify for and be interested in before he signs on the dotted line. The recruiter has already explained that the front-line positions are "spoken for" for the foreseeable future, which is fine with me and OK with my son, who wants to serve and be part of this elite, outstanding group. When the recruiter talks with me he says, "He probably won't be able to actually enter service until around September" but then he tells my son he can get in much sooner, and that he "can't promise him a career field until he's actually ready to sign up." I understand that but want to learn more about the career fields that MIGHT be open to him. Any good suggested resources? Websites or books maybe? Thanks in advance.
