  • What if Libertarianism had guided US policy during the Cold War?

    To some, libertarianism is a panacea - the answer to all our ills. Government should be small, they say, and should operate strictly within the confines set down by the Constitution. That is, only for basic government functions and defense.

    Well what if libertarianism was strictly adhered to by the US government during the Cold War? The Russians send a man into space. President Ron Paul (or whoever) says, "A space program is too expensive. We can't afford that. Besides, there's nothing to gain by going into space."

    Fast forward to the present: The Russians dominate space. Russian satellites patrol the skies like Big Brother. Becoming experts in rocketry, the Russians develop intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of hitting the U.S. Therefore, Stalin (who said in a cold blooded manner that he could win a nuclear war because his people could take more casualties) believes a nuclear war with the United States is totally winnable. After all, he has superior intelligence gathering with his satellites that the US does not. He is able to strike from the other side of the planet. The USSR defeats the U.S. and we become communists.

    Plus, since we did not think a space program would benefit us, we would not have developed things like: GPS devices, satellite TV (no Dish Network or Direct TV), cell phones would be severely limited, no spy satellites, no nuclear capability.

    And no US company would've had the resources or the expertise to develop a space program on their own. Some things you cannot simply leave to the free market.

  • Why do conservatives think the government regulating business its bad?

    Take loans for example. It used to be banks wouldn't tell you your credit score. It wasn't until the government stepped in and forced them that they told you your own credit score. Why? Because if you don't know your score, they can keep screwing you over with a much higher interest rate than you really deserve as long as they keep you in the dark. Once you know your score, you have much more bargaining power and can demand a better rate (if not from them, then someone else will do it).

    Now, I can hear the bankers saying, "All this government regulation is costing us money and without it we could create more jobs." Sure it could: at MINE AND YOURS expense! Their profits would go up because we're taking it in the butt. They're getting rich by making us poor. Yet to hear a conservative tell it, the government is the bad guy here and we just need to let the bank run the show. Where did this illogical rationale come from?

  • If Zimmerman hadn't been armed, would he have gotten out of the car?

    If he hadn't felt emboldened by his firearm, would he have been more cautious and stayed in his car when the 911 operator told him to? And if he had gotten his butt kicked by Trayvon without a gun handy, do you think he would've just run away instead? And what's the worst that would've happened had Travyon been left alone? Even if he was committing a burglary, the worst would've been a break-in instead of a dead body?

  • If you go out of your way to confront someone, can you really claim self-defense?

    If 911 operator says "stay in your car" and I get out and confront a suspected robber do I get to shoot him because "i feared for my life"? If a zookeeper tells me, "Don't jump over the lion's fence" and I do anyway, do I get to shoot the lion in self-defense? If the police tell me not to run into a burning building and I do anyway, do i get to sue the building owner for my injuries?

    It ain't about celebrating any kind of pride. Those people that b**** & moan about the plight of the white man are just people that like to complain about everything and just want an excuse to pin the blame on somebody else for all their problems. They wanna say everything was fine until other minorities got here, now it's all messed up. But the truth is every minority group that ever showed up on America's shores had to go through some kind of hazing initiation. Then after a generation or two, they become fully accepted into American society. Look at American history closely and you'll see this has always been true.

    Funny how their 'principled stands' seem to go out the window when they get killed at the ballot box. Now they think a pathway to legalization is not out of the realm of possibility and they want to be involved and have input in the process.
