I am a happily married father of two wonderful boys. Spent 7 years in the US Army, with two tours in Iraq.

  • How do I backup everything, except Windows?

I am looking to downgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 7, as it is causing issues with my older laptop (specifically, manufacturer never made compatible upgrade patch for my video card for W8). It seems that the process of downgrading without wiping is quite tedious, and only works with certain versions of both programs. So I am looking to wipe and do a clean install.

Is there a way to backup all of my programs and documents, EXCEPT my Windows? I can easily set passwords and settings again in Windows, but I don't want to have to redownload everything, when I can just hit up a backup file.

I am hesitant to use Windows backup, as I don't know if it will cause compatibility problems between 8 and 7 after the downgrade.

Is there a better program to use?

  • Remembering Kanji: On'yomi and Kun'yomi readings?

    Heya!

I am starting to learn Japanese again after many years. I am basically starting from square one. I am working on beginners lessons and my kana, but I am having some trepidations about the kanji.

Could anyone provide some hints or suggestions for remembering both the on and kun readings of a kanji when learning it?

For instance, let's take 先 (of 先生 - sensei - teacher, mister, etc.). There would be the 先 (sen) reading, and the 先 (saki) reading. What would be a good way to remember them both?

    Thanks!

  • Are there any Mason-like groups that do not require a "belief in a Higher Power"?

I really like what the Masons and other like groups (BPOE, KoC, Odd Fellows, etc.) do around the community, and the brotherhood and networking that brings them together, but I have one simple problem: Every one of the local groups where I live has one stipulation that must be adhered to when joining - you must have a belief in a higher power.

Now, being an Atheist and one who prefers science and logic to prevail, I have an issue with this. I will not lie and say that I believe in something I don't just to join, especially when most of these groups require some kind of membership fee. I don't mind if there is some kind of prayer during the meetings, as I can just stand quietly while the people pray as they wish. I don't have a problem with that. But to REQUIRE someone to believe in something just to join...no.

Are there any groups out there that do not have that stipulation?

  • Notary Signing Agent in MA - worth it?

I am working on becoming a Notary Public in Massachusetts. I know there are restrictions, regarding real estate and having to be an attorney to sign the documents yourself, of which I am not. But I get confused when it has verbage like this:

"A Notary who is employed by a lender may notarize a document in conjunction with the closing of his or her employer’s real estate loans."

Does this mean I do not have to be an attorney to sign them IF I am working in conjuction with a real estate company?

I'm not really concerned with the cost of becoming one, but, when it all comes down to it, is it worth it to become a Notary Signing Agent in MA (assuming I can be employed by a RE firm)?

  • Story ideas: make explosives from natural sources?

I am writing my outline for a fantasy story which includes a (wo)man getting sent to basically medieval times. A large scale battle is at hand, and the girl/guy (who knows basic chemistry) wants to help by making explosives yet unknown to help them survive. What are some good explosives that can be made from natural materials and/or easily distill chemicals using what would be available say from 10th-16th century?

I do not, repeat, DO NOT need actual recipes (I.E. ingredient ratios, etc.). Just the ingredients. Not looking to get put on any government lists...just add flavor to my stories.

  • Splenda and Lemon Juice?

I have heard that adding a tsp of lemon juice (or some other acid, like cream of tartar) can take away the bitter "aftertaste" of artificial sweeteners, especially Splenda.

    Can any cooks confirm this?

  • Is the word 'fellowship' specific to 9 people? If so, what are the names for groups of more or less?

If so, are there special names for groups of more or less, like, say, eight people?

  • Which HP Pavilion Dv7 do I have?

Heya! I was looking to update my software, but when I went on HPs website and clicked on drivers for the Pavilion dv7s, it gave me a whole bunch of different model numbers. I am not sure which is mine. I checked system information, as well as under the battery. None of the numbers match. Can anyone think of a trick to find out which version of the computer that you have (i.e. HP Pavilion dv7-1245dx or something).

    Thanks!

  • Why does Hebrew handwriting look so different from print?

With most languages, the written and cursive forms at least look similar to the print version, usually accounting for flow and fast writing. But, as I have seen, the written Hebrew seems to be quite different from the print version (also sometimes called the capital version). Why are they so different?

  • Would I be able to reenlist with PTSD?

I am a US Army veteran, who got out in 2006, with two tours in Iraq under my belt. I have also been diagnosed with PTSD, among other physical issues, by the VA, giving me a 60% rating. I am still work and socially functional, and I am currently going to school for a bachelors degree (thanks, Uncle Sam!).

I have had recent thoughts, however, that I want to reenlist. I have heard many different views on PTSD and reenlisting, and I was hoping to get a clear answer.

So, can a functional PTSD veteran get back in?
