  • What is a gym induction?

I've never been to the gym before. I asked what this thing was when I booked it but the woman didn't really tell me. I really want to know what is going to happen. What do I have to do? What should I take with me? I'm autistic (not severely), and I can get very stressed when I don't know what's going to happen.

Can anyone tell me what happened in their gym induction? What will I be expected to do?

  • Are the Geneva Conventions only valid in times of war?

I know they were written specifically referring to protocol in times of war but if a community were not technically at war but the situation was such that people were still acting in a way which violated the conventions (eg civil war, or millitary involvement in an area in which the civillians are not prisoners of war, and the area is not at war) would the conventions still be valid? Do people still have to obey them in all situations even when not actually at war?

  • What's the best site to sell things on?

I happen to be finding myself particularly strapped for cash at the same time as I've finally cleared out a closet of stuff, nothing valuable, mostly books DVDs etc, but hopefully it should be enough to tide me over until I can get things sorted out.

What's the best site for selling things on, in terms of how easy it is and how much of your money they take? I'd think it was probably eBay, Amazon or maybe Playtrade, but I don't know really, I have no experience with this. Advice?

  • Why is being heterophobic completely acceptable?

Or for that matter, racist against white people, sexist against men etc?

I've just found out that there is a website called Lesbook, which is a social networking site for lesbians, yet if I made a site called Straightbook, only for heterosexual people and banned gay users, it would probably be closed down. Why are there allowed to be gay bars but not straight bars?

I have no prejudice against lesbians at all (in fact my sister is a lesbian) but what do object to is discrimination against someone because of their sexuality, even if it is discriminating against a heterosexual person for being straight. I would not be allowed to join Lesbook because of my sexuality, which I think is completely unfair.

  • Do you think someone should go to jail for...?

killing a person who broke into their home and attacked their family?

I thought of this watching Desperate Housewives. Carlos killed this guy who raped his wife years ago, then came back and stalked her and broke into their house and tried to rape her again. But now they all have to cover it up because he'd go to jail if he was caught. Would you say it's fair to kill that person or do you think murder is murder and he should be punished for taking someone's life?

  • What can I do about two kids who follow me when I go for a walk?

I'm 16 (17 next month). I go for a walk pretty much every evening and sometimes in the afternoon if I have time, just around the block and up the street.

Recently there have been two girls who follow me and sometimes talk to me but I don't know what they're saying because I have earphones in. They're clearly taking the p**s but I'm not really sure why. Today they threw a chip at me then said it was an accident but in a way that meant it clearly wasn't.

They just follow me around until I go home and it's creepy and weird. I asked one how old she was and she said 12.

I know they're just stupid little kids who aren't going to do anything serious but it's really affecting me because I can't go for a walk properly because there are these annoying brats following me so my head is messed up all the time (I've always needed to expel energy regularly and I can get really stressed if I don't) so it's hugely affecting my life.

The other problem is I can really see myself hitting one of them soon. They are really irritating me and having a negative effect on my whole life and I might lose my temper but I don't think legally I could get away with hitting a child because "they followed me". Legally I don't think they've done anything wrong.

Is there anything I can do?

  • How do you work out the key of a song that uses power chords?

I tried to learn how to work out the key but (as I understand it) in order to do that you have to know the chords in the song, as in major, minor etc. If a song only uses power chords, I don't know how to work out the key. I heard that the first chord of a song is nearly always the key but that sounds way too simple.

Can anyone give me advice on working out the key of a song that uses only power chords?

  • People who play an instrument...?

Do you find lsitening to music you like inspiring or depressing? I mean that in the sense of, sometimes when I hear an amazing guitarist I'm motivated to do even more practice because I'm reminded of just how awesome it can sound but sometimes I hear someone fantastic play and think "I will never ever be even nearly that good" and then I find it difficult to practoce with the knowledge that I will never even approach the limits of what the guitar can do.

    What do you think?

  • What do I need to connect pedals to my guitar and amp?

I play electric guitar but have never bought any pedals as my amp has loads of effects anyway but I'm planning to buy a couple in the near future to expand my sound, but it's just occurred to be that I don't know what to d with them.

Do I connect the pedal using wires like the one I use to connect the guitar and amp so it goes guitar-pedal-amp? Won't that leave a lot of excess wire if I have to add in a whole lead for one stompbox? I know there are things called pedalboards, do I need one af those and what do they do? Will I need to buy an adapter to attach the pedal to main electricity?

Could someone please tell me about these things?

  • How do you know there the line is between perseverance and wasting your time?

Sometimes it's difficult to know when to quit.

Have I given up too early?

Am I chasing something I can never achieve?

  • Do you really think it's a good idea to "follow your dream"?

People say that, but it's one thing to tell other people to take such a big chance on their lives and a whole different matter to do it yourself. I mean, if your dream is to become a famous musician, actor, sports player etc, it's statistically really unlikely that you'll succeed, whereas if you go to school, get a degree and a pretty decent job you'll probably be ok for your life.

Objectively, it's a really stupid idea to try and make a successful career as a guitarist or somthing like that because it's probably going to fail. Yet it's just so difficult for that person to accept that they will never have that dream come true.

OK I'm rambling. I was just wondering what people thought. Is it worth it, really, the tremendous risk of following your dream vs the safety of a comfortable life in which you always wonder what could have happened if you'd taken the chance?

  • You can have 10 points if you tell me how to start a thread on this forum?

It's called thegearpage, it's about guitars. I frickin' love guitars and I answer things about them but I'm not good at computers and I don't know how to start a thread and I really want to ask people's opinions on slim taper necks on the SG.

Anyway, I've been roud in circles in every place it would logically be but I can't find out how to start a thread. Help please people?

  • Did John Lee Hooker play guitar on his tracks?

I always thought he sang and played guitar but I've just seen a video where he's singing and someone else is playing guitar ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0aFKgi5D6eU&feature... ). Did he play on just some of his songs or what? I always thought he did them all. Whoever it is is an incredible guitarist of course but I was wondering if it was actually JLH?
