How do I clone my Operating System for use on another machine?
I have 2 laptops. One runs Windows 7. The other runs linux.
I also have a 2TB USB hard drive.
Both laptops are legally owned. So is Windows 7 (from the one laptop).
How do I "clone" Windows 7 and put it on the linux laptop?
3 AnswersSoftware10 years agoHow Do I Boot My Computer from a System Image?
I recently obtained a new laptop with Windows 7 installed on it. Being the responsible person I am, I immediately too my 2TB Western Digital USB Hard Drive which was formatted NTFS (By Windows) and created a System Image (which is a complete clone of the HDD).
A week later, the Computer died. Luckily, I have another one that I use primarily for Programming and Software Dev (for school). However, This one runs Linux; more specifically, it runs Ubuntu (because I like being casual). Now, however, I need to use that system Image and install Windows 7 on my Linux Laptop. It's a long story.
So I went into the Boot menu, and tried to boot from the USB Hard Drive that had the system image on it, but Ubuntu still loaded instead. Do I have to Completely format my laptops HDD to receive the new OS?
Can someone walk me through Step-by-step what I need to do to get this to work? I kinda need it in 2 days, but it would be better if I could get it done in, like, six hours...
2 AnswersSoftware10 years agoVISTA screwed me over. OS got Deleted. Any Suggested Fixes?
Okay, I have an interesting situation...
My dv5 HP Laptop (Running VISTA, blehh) was long overdo for a system reset. This would be the first one I was to perform on this computer. A little history: The Laptop was one of those 'Preloaded OS, doesn't come with any hard copies' deals from BestBuy. When I first got the laptop, I created "boot" disk that weren't actually "BOOT" disks. As it turns out, VISTA runs you through a process that creates "System Restore Disks".
I was unaware of this at the time, but had my suspicions, especially when I had to create three (3) disks for one backup (A REAL boot disk is never that big...). I just figured that I would be able to work with it either way. This was about a year ago.
So yesterday I go to "Reset Computer to Factory Defaults". I load disk 1 in and boot from that, select all the correct options to blahh blahh blahh. And the process starts. About ten minutes into it, the disk tray pops open and "Insert disk 2" appears, as expected. I insert Disk 2 and my gut twists in a knot as I listen to the drive go through one of those repetitive reading cycles that means it's getting caught on something. Fifteen minutes later the tray pops open and "This is a bad disk. Please insert disk 2" is displayed.
Well, that's that. Never trust a windows application to "automatically" create any sort of system recovery ever again.
I whip out the user's manual and BEHOLD! There's a pamphlet: "Restore Your System Without Discs". "Your computer includes a new system recovery feature that does not require CDs or DVDs."
I don't know why I even bothered. I knew it wasn't going to work. But, hey; surely following the directions to the letter off of this awesome pamphlet won't lead me astray!
I followed the directions. The program said the disk was formatted correctly, and the process of reinstalling the "Factory Default/Shipped Software" began.
Aaaaaaaaaand "Error. If this persists, contact technical support".
BINGO! I now have a Laptop without an OS and a HDD that is either formatted correctly, or so screwed up that I'll have to reformat it.
How would I go about solving this?
NOTE:
I am NOT going back to VISTA, unless i can somehow pull it back up on the problem PC. If I have to reinstall anything, I'll be upgrading to Windows 7, or Ubuntu.
If I must install a New OS, please inform me the best way to prepare my 'Blank Slate' to receive them.
Oh, and before you worry, all My important files are on a separate drive; I'm not a total idiot... unless they aren't formatted correctly... -Blam!-
7 AnswersSoftware1 decade agoIn JAVA - "Does Not Equal" for a string?
I need to know the command for "DOES NOT EQUAL" for a String. I already know that '!=' is the "does not equal command for integers and doubles, but I need the command for Strings.
String.equals("Text");
that is what I have so far, but I also need it to IgnoreCase, so the opposite of this:
String.equalsIgnoreCase("text")
Do you understand what I'm trying to say?
4 AnswersProgramming & Design1 decade agoWhat is the "does not equal" command in JAVA?
I'm writing an 'if' statement:
if ((originalAmount < 25) || (originalAmount > 100) || ((originalAmount % 5) _ _____))
Basically, if originalAmount is less that 25 or greater than 100, or if it is not divisible by 5, then I'll return an error message.
The only problem is that I can't remember the command for "Does not equal", or "whole number".
Can someone help?
5 AnswersProgramming & Design1 decade agoDoes Rei Survive in Yukikaze?
I hope to get an answer from someone who has actually read the Novels...
But I know that that's too much to ask. I'll be getting a ton of generic answers from both sides of the spectrum, which is an expected hazard of asking the Internet anything; But I'm hoping to find a diamond in the rough.
I just finished the series and thought it was good (It could have done without the misleadingly close friendship at the beginning [They are not gay, by the way. The proof in in the novels]). I'm 95% certain the Rei makes it back alive at the end, due to the fact that the Journalist saw him in her rear-view mirror, but I already anticipate arguments to this.
What I'm really looking for, I guess, is absolution. Does anyone else believe Rei survived?
1 AnswerComics & Animation1 decade ago".zip" files downloading as web pages?!?!?!?
I have a huge problem.
Whenever I try to download a .zip file off the internet and save it on my computer (or open it) it saves it as a web page. I can't unzip a web page, or extract any files or anything from it. It just crashes my computer.
Likewise, when I try to open the .zip file without downloading it, it "Opens with" internet explorer. I've tried to change the program it opens with, but what should I select? There is no "ZIP File Opener".
Help me, please. How can I rectify this issue. I need to download some things for class.
1 AnswerProgramming & Design1 decade agoNo 'check boxes' in Windows Vista Task Manager "Processes" tab?
There are some processes that I need to keep from starting automatically when I start up my computer (I use Windows VISTA Home Premium), so I went into Task Manager and clicked the "Processes" tab to uncheck a few of those useless processes. However, when the tab opens up, there aren't any check boxes.
I went under the view tab to try to enable them, but there was no option to do so. So then I went into the "properties" of one of the processes I was trying to keep from starting automatically, but there was no such option there.
What can I do do get these check boxes back? If the check boxes can't come back, then how do I keep processes from starting automatically?
If you are going list the steps I need to take, please be sure that they are actually legible and can be understood easily.
Also, there are no check boxes in the "Services" tab, either.
2 AnswersSoftware1 decade agoI need Help with Price Listings on Amazon.com ASAP!?
Okay, here's the deal:
There is a certain item that I'm looking to pre-order on Amazon.com. It's regular price is $150.00, but I found it listed on Amazon.com for $90.00 and $60.00. I need to know if Amazon honors these prices when I pre-order, or will they force me to pay the difference?
Has anyone else been through a similar situation with Amazon.com?
I don't need guesses or speculations. I need actual examples and experiences.
1 AnswerCorporations1 decade agoCan anyone give me some info on SNOPES.COM?
I was wondering if SNOPEs was ever wrong. Who runs SNOPES? Where do they get their information? Who has the final say-so as to what goes on SNOPES.COM? Are they politically biased one way or another? Have they been known to alter information for any reason? Do they disagree with any groups/organizations? Is SNOPES.COM a government-run or corporation-sponsored website? Where is SNOPES based out of, if anywhere?

Oh my goodness. I don't know if it's because I'm all junked up on caffeine or what, but for some reason I find this video to be Hilarious. Especially the end. .... And it worries me. At the end I just couldn't stop laughing. Am I crazy? Do you think it is funny?
Everything from the horrible quality to the ridiculous editing just made me laugh! Am I being too cynical and/or cruel?

3 AnswersLaw & Ethics1 decade agoI have a question about my Xbox 360?
Here's the deal: I was playing on Xbox Live in a matchmaking game on Halo 3. My team was winning. Then, all of a sudden, the game freezes and a screeching sound comes through the TV speakers. That's not all, though; Wide, checkered lines appear running down the screen vertically. The Xbox became unresponsive. I even opened the disk tray, but the frozen image of me beating down a stupid red guy was still on the screen with checkered lines running down the image. I turned it off, then back on. It worked for, like, thirty seconds before the same thing happened again. This time, though, three red indicators flashed around the power button. Only once, though, and I have yet to see them again. Now, whenever I try to play a game, it will work for about two or three minutes before going through the whole freezing thing again. Keep in mind that the red ring has only appeared briefly once out of numerous tests. I have tried multiple games, and even just the arcade, but no change.
Now, warranty history. My first Xbox was sent in and replaced by Microsoft. The new one has worked for about three years, and is the one that just froze.
What is the problem with my Xbox? Will Microsoft fix it for free? If not, how much would it cost to send it in and have them fix it?

2 AnswersComics & Animation1 decade agoI'm thinking about buying a Motorcycle. Thoughts?
I don't yet have my M-class liscense, but I've always tinkered with the idea of owning a motorcycle. I wouldn't want a 'chopper' or Harley; I would rather have something like a kawasaki or ninja. It would have to get at least 40 miles per gallon, and (of course) be fast. I would like it to come in Dark-Green or Black or Silver or Grey. Any suggestions?
Also, I've had experience riding a Dirt-Bike as a kid. Just to let you know...

2 AnswersBooks & Authors1 decade agoHow can I get rid of my Class 2 Stage 1 cavity by myself?
I just got back from a hack of a dentist (My first time seeing him), and he came to the conclusion that I need to have a cavity drilled. I'm not one for needless damage to my body, so I looked into this further.
The person cleaning my teeth could not find any cavities visually, the so-called 'dentist' had to find it via an X Ray taken prior to the cleaning. It was a small spot still on the outside of the tooth. It was located on the lower-back left molar, between another molar. I found that it was classified as a Class 2. Further investigation revealed the cavity to be in Stage 1. I found that a stage 1 cavity can be treated at home by altering the intake level of sugar and cleaning teeth with a flouride-infused toothepaste. This process would kill the bacteria and allow my supposed infected tooth to "remineralize".
So... is my treatment correct? If so, recommend some Oral Hygiene products that I can use to help me in my quest of cavity prevention!
