Servants have servants?
Excuse me for sounding ignorant about Indian culture, but one of my friend's mom said something today that made me want to ask it here. She said that in India, everyone has servants, and that even servants have their own servants who cook for them. It sounds like hyperbole but is it true?
7 AnswersOther - Society & Culture1 decade agoWhat age do you start a nighttime routine?
Hi all, I have a 3-week old boy and I remember fondly having a bedtime routine with my daughter, who is 8 now. But I can't remember when we started it. He still seems to be too young for a set bedtime because he's feeding and sleeping whenever he feels like it at this age. What age did you start with a bedtime routine? By that I mean the usual - like a bath, getting into jammies, reading a book, etc.
7 AnswersNewborn & Baby1 decade agoNot sure what to think of this advice from my endo? Meds during labor (pregnancy)?
This is my 2nd pregnancy, and I'm on Metformin 2xday and Lantus 1x day. For my first pregnancy, I was on insulin entirely and I had instructions on how much to take when I was going in to be induced.
This time, I don't have a set date like that, but I asked my endocrinologist how I should handle taking my medications if I thought I was going into labor. (I have a different endo this time.) She said to not take the Metformin when I felt like I was going into labor, and to not take Lantus the night before.
You can sort of do this because you get contractions for a few days before going into active labor.
But my question is, my understanding is that Metformin doesn't really work that way. Skipping 1 or 2 pills really won't have much effect, will it? I thought it took a few weeks for Metformin to be effective and conversely it takes more than 1 day of missed pills to be out of your system.
I'll comply with the doc's suggestion but I'm wondering why I would bother not taking the Metformin for a day or two at most when the only thing I can think it would matter is that I might throw it up?
4 AnswersDiabetes1 decade agoNon-Stress Test questions?
I had a NST today and I was stuck in the L&D department for four hours. The reason was they did not have a good tracing of the baby showing "reactivity". I remember doing NST's with my last pregnancy 8 years ago, and if the baby wasn't active they would come buzz the baby awake with a little noisemaker. The baby's heartbeat was steady but didn't vary much but it felt like he was kicking most of the time.
I'm just wondering - I have these scheduled weekly because I'm high risk. Is this one of these things where I can eat something and make the baby more frisky? The problem is I'm a diabetic so I can't drink juice or anything sugary, which I've heard people suggest.
And four hours - do you think there is something to worry about here or was I just receiving poor care? I wasn't sure if they should have been checking on me more or if that would have done anything? When I had this done 8 years ago it was in an office that only did NST's and you were in and out in less than an hour.
3 AnswersPregnancy1 decade agoBaby shower question - favors for my Girl Scouts?
I have a Girl Scout troop and they are holding a baby shower for me at one of our meetings this year (and I am passing the torch to another parent to be leader).
I am not throwing or planning the shower and I know it's not how you do it etiquette-wise, but I want to send the girls home with some sort of favor. Does anyone have any ideas? I was thinking like a baby bottle filled with candy, but is that too weird? It's not like they can use the bottles once the candy is gone, so there should be something better.
They will be doing a craft (making candy pacifiers) and playing baby shower games.
6 AnswersPregnancy1 decade agoWould you pay over $1,100 for a crib?

I'm looking around at cribs and I can't believe the variety in prices. How can you go from a $99 crib at IKEA to over $1,000? I understand the Ikea version is pine, no bells and whistles, but the $160 crib at IKEA doesn't look much different from this expensive one.

My question is, who buys these (someone must be or they wouldn't be making them) and if it's you, can you explain why? What am I missing?
19 AnswersPregnancy1 decade agoWhat do you learn from the 20-week ultrasound?
I had amniocentesis at 16 weeks, and the results came back that everything was in the clear. I know they are only looking at chromosome disorders. My question is, at the "big" ultrasound, what is it that they're looking for? Is it just measuring for size?
We already know the sex of the baby from the amnio, but other than that, are there any big red flags they look for in the ultrasound? I go in tomorrow and I'm a little nervous there are problems they can find that weren't visible from amniocentesis.
9 AnswersPregnancy1 decade agoAm I overreacting about this nurse practitioner?
When I first went in for a prenatal appointment at 9 weeks (I'm a diabetic, they see you as soon as you find out you're pregnant), the nurse practitioner went over the standard stuff. She asked if my pregnancy was planned, and I said no. This matters because if I had uncontrolled blood sugars that would be very dangerous for the baby - at least, that's why I thought she asked.
But after I said no, she asked me if I was thinking about terminating the pregnancy. I was a little shocked, but I told her that no, that wasn't even on my radar. I told her my blood sugars are controlled and there's no reason to terminate.
But a couple of times during the appointment she brought it up in different ways, like asking if I was depressed about the pregnancy, was I on the fence, did I have enough support at home.
I'm 38 and have been married 11 years, I really have a great support system and already have a daughter. I can't see any reason I would seem likely to want an abortion.
8 AnswersPregnancy1 decade agoI had an amnio this morning; question about fetal movement?
I had an amnio this morning, I'm 16 1/2 weeks pregnant.
I know I am supposed to be looking for pain, cramping, and leakage. I'm resting and I feel fine, just a little pressure. However, no one mentioned fetal movement. Ever since I got home and have been in bed, the baby is so active it feels like somersaults in there. They told me the fluid was clear, there was no blood or anything right after the procedure. It's just constant movement and kicking. Is this because I'm laying around in the afternoon, or is it something to be concerned with?
5 AnswersPregnancy1 decade agoSoon-to-be-mommies: what about pregnancy surprised you?
For example, morning sickness. I thought pregnant women threw up in the morning then went on with their day. I had only seen people laugh about it as if it's a harmless quirk of pregnancy. The reality for me in my first pregnancy was that it was all-day nausea and not being able to even look at some foods. There was nothing quirky or charming about it.
There's tons of examples, like not being able to turn over in bed without your arms after a certain month because it's like those muscles just stop working. I had no idea that would happen.
How about you?
7 AnswersPregnancy1 decade agoDoes your husband/partner obssess about when you conceived?
My husband is constantly talking about the moment of conception. He wants to figure out exactly when this baby was conceived - meaning, he wants to remember the exact details of that night, how good the sex was, everything.
I really couldn't care less, and I was wondering if this was some male thing.
12 AnswersPregnancy1 decade agoI feel like I'm eating all morning - is this going to backfire?
When my stomach gets empty I get so nauseous, but eating makes it go away. I try to make it small and healthy foods but I get so dang hungry. I feel like I'm eating all morning.
Today I've eaten:
5:30 nibbled on whole wheat crackers and a few bites of string cheese
6:30 dry whole wheat toast and 1/2 cup cottage cheese
8:30 dry sourdough toast, egg beaters+1 egg w/ fat free cream cheese
9:45 light yogurt
10:45 - so hungry, I caved and ate lunch - about 1/3 cup high protein pasta with 1 cup turkey meat sauce (leftovers)
I feel like I'm over the sickness hump now but it just seems like more food than I should be eating. That's like 4 meals before noon. Does anyone have any suggestions?
One complication is that I can't have carbs by themselves because I'm a diabetic. So I have to have about 7g of protein whenever I have something like toast, and breads are what feel good in my stomach.
8 AnswersPregnancy1 decade agoThis is a silly question, but can your pets tell you're pregnant?
My cat has been so clingy and lubby dubby with me lately - not to mention doing that paw kneading thing on my tummy when she hasn't done that in a long time. I'm only 5-6 weeks along.
14 AnswersPregnancy1 decade agoFIL's retirement party - no RSVP - should I be embarrassed or shrug it off?
My FIL's company is throwing him a retirement party this evening. It's a "cocktails and hors d'ouevres" evening. Our FIL told us about it and wanted me and my husband to be there even though it's a company party.
Just today my husband forwarded me the email with the address. I realized that what he sent me is actually an invitation that was forwarded on from his dad, that came from someone at his company.
So basically, what I'm realizing is that no one officially invited us (since the party is being thrown FOR his dad) and that *gulp* no one RSVP'd for us. Since we were given a verbal invitation from his dad, I guess I thought that meant he was hosting it. But on the invitation there was a name & number to RSVP with - and I didn't see it until this morning!
4 AnswersEtiquette1 decade agoIs your standard of living the same, better or worse than your parents'?
Do you have the same level of education? Or better, or worse? How about your income and possessions?
I just wonder in general if we are better off than we were a generation ago. For my siblings and I, we've found that unless both spouses work affording a house is impossible - but then again, we live in an area where the real estate is ridiculous. So is that for everyone, or just Californians?
7 AnswersOther - Society & Culture1 decade agoCan you get a ring sized from 11 down to 7?
Does anyone have any experience with a sizing that dramatically different? Do they cut it and take out the gold, or make the whole ring thicker to keep the gold? It's got diamonds set in the band, but not all the way around - do they have to reset everything? If they end up taking out the gold, do they give it to you separately?
5 AnswersFashion & Accessories1 decade agoAnyone here know how to do a twizzle?
I'm unclear on twizzles. Are they like a forward inside three-turn that just keeps going if you don't check it? We did them in class today, but it was right at the end of the class and I feel like I didn't quite get them. It felt like a backspin with just one revolution, but with the free foot at the ankle. Is it supposed to be more like an edge-to-edge turn or a spin on your sweet spot?
Class is a week away and I want to practice in between, but I don't want to work up the wrong way, KWIM?
7 AnswersIce Skating1 decade agoAnyone have ideas for Girl Scout Swaps with a hippie theme?
Our Camporee this year is "Feelin' Groovy" - hippie-themed. The only idea I can come up with would be something involving flowers. I don't want to do tie-dye (too involved and messy). Does anyone have any good ideas for GS swaps?
My girls are 2nd grade Brownies and frankly they are not crafty types - we're more of a "get outside and get active" troop. So it needs to be fairly simple - no glue guns. Thanks!
